第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
It was the beginning of the school year a few years ago and I had a little boy in my class who came from a nonEnglish speaking home.He was very quiet and shy.I wasn’t sure how much he understood during the school day and I was especially concerned that he just stood by himself at break time and did not play.If I tried to talk to him,he would turn away and tightly shut his eyes to hide from me.
After a day or two of this,I decided to seek the help from one of my outgoing and friendly little girls.I called her over and she ran to me,ready to help.
I immediately began a long speech about what I needed from her.I asked her if she would try to get him to play, and I started talking quickly about all these suggestions on how she could start communicating with him.I explained she could do this, she could do that, she could try this idea, she could try that idea. She touched my arm to stop my talking and looked up at me in that wise and special way that only a six-year-old can,and said,“Don’t worry.I speak kid.” And she ran off.
I stood there all alone, silently watching her.It took less than a minute for the two new friends to run off, hand in hand, happily joining a game of tag (捉人游戏) taking place all over the gym.
I often think of that small moment, about what I learned and hew important it is for all teachers to speak kid—big kid, little kid and middle kid.I know my focus must be on teaching students how to think, how to approach problems, and how to figure out solutions and teaching them never to let the_opportunity away.We must be ready to learn from our students because those “teachable moments” during the school days are for us,the teachers,as well as our kids.
56.Why did the author worry about the boy?
A.He didn’t dare to look at the author in the eyes.
B.He couldn’t speak English a s well as other students.
C.He failed to understand what the author taught.
D.He was unwilling to communicate with others.

A.speak the language that kids understand
B.speak the boy’s native language
C.know what kids want to say
D.speak well like a little kid
58.The underlined words “the opportunity” refer to the chance to________.
A.play at break time B.learn from students
C.solve problems D.speak kid
59.What can we learn from the passage?

D.You learn something every day if you pay attention.

It can be very tempting (诱人的) to abandon your good sense of healthy eating on vacation.Although you may try hard to eat healthily,it’s easy to take an ice cream here and there. Therefore,be careful with what you eat on vacation.
Pack some nutritious foods in a cooler full of ice packs.Fruits, vegetables, biscuits, yogurt, and sandwiches are all great to have with you on the road.Don’t overdo it by adding in too many snacks like chips.
Once you arrive at your hotel, turn the mini-bar (小冰箱) key down as this helps to avoid the temptation. If your hotel offers a light breakfast, stick to fruits, cereals, and proteins. If your hotel has a stove or microwave, consider bringing your own healthy food with you.During breakfast,it is OK to eat things like eggs and bacon, which are after all,in one way, nutritious.
If you simply must eat out,do so only when you are hungry.Restaurants will usually serve large dishes with much food,so be careful. If you do go a bit over on a meal, simply cut back on
the next.Try sharing a meal with a family member.
If you find it hard to fit in three square meals a day,try to fit in six smaller meals or snacks,as your body needs energy every four hours or so.When you eat out, avoid appetizers (开胃食品).You may miss breakfast, lunch or supper at times, but you should know it will add fat.
When it’s possible, avoid eating large meals at night. When your body gets ready for sleep and slows down,it also burns calories at a much slower pace.Never eat bread before bed,and be sure to avoid butter.Choose fish or poultry for your meal instead, and include vegetables as a side dish.
60.Why are people easy to be tempted by delicious food on vacation?
A.Because there’s no one to remind them to keep away from delicious food.
B.Because it’s easy to forget healthy eating habits on vacation.
C.Because people usually prefer to eat delicious food on vacation.
D.Because it is easy to get delicious food everywhere.

A.How to plan healthy meals.
B.How to cook proper food.
C.How to eat healthily on vacation.
D.How to plan a family vacation.

Dolphins have been declared the world’s second most intelligent creatures after humans, with scientists suggesting they are so bright that they should be treated as “non-human persons”.Studies into dolphin behaviour have highlighted (突出) how similar their communications are to those of humans and that they are even brighter than chimpanzees.
The researchers argue that their work shows it is morally unacceptable to keep such intelligent animals in amusement parks or to kill them for food or by accident when fishing. Some 300,000 whales and dolphins die in this way each year.
“Many dolphin brains are larger than our own and second in mass only to the human brain when corrected for body size,” said Lori Marino,a zoologist at Emory University in Atlanta,Georgia, who has scanned and mapped the brains of dolphin species and compared them with those of primates (灵长类).
Dolphins have long been recognized as among the most intelligent of animals but many researchers had placed them below chimps, which some studies have found can reach the intelligence levels of three-year-old children.Recently, however,a series of behavioural studies have suggested that dolphins, especially species such as the bottlenose, are the brighter of the two.The studies show how dolphins have distinct personalities,a strong sense of self and can think about the future.
It has also become clear that they are “cultural” animals, meaning that new types of behaviour can quickly be picked up by one dolphin from another. In one study,Professor Diana Reiss showed that bottlenose dolphins could recognize themselves in a mirror and use it to inspect various parts of their bodies,an ability that had been thought was limited to humans and chimps.
64.Why do the researchers think it improper to kill dolphins?
A.They have become endangered.
B.They help us a lot in the fishing industry.
C.They contribute to research into primates.
D.They have similar intelligence to humans.
65.According to the passage,a dolphin’s intelligence might reach as high as that of________.
A.a new-born baby B.a one-year-old baby
C.a three-year-old kid D.a four-year-old kid
66.It can be inferred from the passage that________.
A.dolphins have the largest brain to body size
B.chimpanzees used to be thought as clever as whales
C.the bottlenose is the cleverest of the dolphin species
D.Lori Marino has found new species of dolphins
67.Dolphins can be called “cultural” animals because they________.
A.have the ability to learn from each other
B.can recognize each other in a group
C.are able to communicate with humans
D.will be punished for an individual’s bad behavi our

Researchers have known that exercise can affect certain moods.Running, bike riding and
other exercise programs have been found to be good ways to deal with depression.Similarly,a study from Germany published in April found that light activity like walking or gardening made people happy.Even rats and mice in the lab responded emotionally to exercise;their behavior showed that exercise made them more relaxed.
But what about anger, one of the more universal and destructive moods? Can exercise influence how angry you become in certain situations? A study presented at the most recent annual conference of the American College of Sports Medicine can provide some answers.
For the study, hundreds of undergraduates at the University of Georgia filled out questionnaires about their moods. From that group, researchers chose 16 young men who got angry easily. The researchers invited the men to a lab and had them fill out a survey about their moods at that moment.During the two days of the study, the men wore equipment that could read electrical activity in the brain.Next, researchers showed a series of slides (幻灯片) to each young man.The slides were shown in order to induce anger.Electrical activity in the men’s brains showed that they were growing angry when seeing the slides. They also described to researchers how angry they felt.
On another day, after viewing the slides again, the men either sat quietly or rode a bike for 30 minutes at a moderate (中等的) speed while their brain patterns and level of anger were recorded. The results showed that their second viewing of the slides led to more anger than the first. After exercising, the men’s buildup of anger stopped. For the men who sat quietly, they had much difficulty controlling their racing emotion. The study suggests that exercise can prevent the build-up of anger.
68.The study described in the passage is mainly about________.
A.how to deal with anger
B.how useful exercise is
C.the relationship between exercise and happiness
D.the relationship between exercise and anger
69.According to the passage, the second viewing of the slides________.
A.lasted for more time
B.made the men angrier
C.made the men want to exercise
D.was immediately done after the first viewing
70.What does the underlined word “induce” in the 3rd paragraph mean?
A.Cure. B.Examine. C.Cause. D.Prevent.
71.According to the last paragraph, the men who sat quietly after viewing the slides again________.
A.got increasingly angry
B.stopped being angry more quickly
C.didn’t like riding a bike

Dear Erica,
It is really sad when a friendship ends.It sounds as though you have done everything to make contact with Nadine, but she still doesn’t want to see you.
I could guess that maybe she lost her memory, found out some awful secret about you or that she was just bored with you.But it would be just guess.
A similar thing happened to me once when a very good old friend cut me off.We had been friends since I was fifteen and the friendship lasted twenty years before she left me five years ago.I wrote asking her to tell me the reason and tried to offer her ways of reconnecting but heard nothing.I concluded that she was moving in a different directi on.It wasn’t something I understood but I realized I had no choice but to let go of any hope of being in a friendship with her any more. However,I still hold on to my good memories of her and smile when I remember some of the crazy things we did together.
Friendship is freely given but it can also be freely taken away. There is no family bond, marriage commitment or employment contract holding friends together. This is why it is so great when the relationship does work and people make the choice to be part of each other’s lives.Friendships often become tricky if one person expects more from the relationship than the other.I can only suggest that you send a Christmas card or a friend request on Facebook but don’t expect to get a reply. If you do get one,it will be a pleasant surprise.
I would suggest that you move on and focus on the friends who do want to be part of your life. That doesn’t mean that you have to forget Nadine—she will always be an important memory. And that is the thing about friendships.
72.The letter was most probably written by a(n)________.
A.teenager B.old lady
C.middle aged woman D.young adult
73.What does the author finally do when facing the same problem?
A.She continues sending letters to her friend.
B.She keeps apologizing to her friend.
C.She keeps this friendship in memory.
D.She gives up the friendship.
74.How does the author describe friendship in this letter?
A.Friendship isn’t worth a penny.
B.Friendship needs tending carefully.
C.Friendship can stand on one side.
D.There is no friendship without confidence.
75.What does the author suggest Erica should do?
A.Forget everything about Nadine.
B.Concentrate on her other friends.
C.Find out the reason for the broken friendship.
D.Stop contacting Nadine.

Everyone has weaknesses,so you should love yourself unconditionally.Nothing can stop you from being confident. In Latin language, confidence means “to believe in oneself”.Here’s how to believe in yourself.
Find your passion (爱好) and special talents.Whether it’s classic cars, musical skills,or basket weaving, you will feel confident when you do these hobbies and recognize (意识到) what you enjoy doing most.More importantly, you’ll be enjoying your progress.Focusing on your go od aspects helps you by making sure you don’t pay attention to those aspects that are not so good.It doesn’t have to be a specific skill or activity either;it can be a way or an attitude that you use all your life.
Choose a role model and think for yourself.Very confident people know what they are doing is right, usually because they have original ideas, rather than attempting to copy good ideas from another source.Think of the qualities that the role model displays, whether physical, emotional, moral,or spiritual (精神上的).Work towards gaining these qualities.
Focus on others.Try not to focus negatively (否定地;消极地) on how other people see you and think of you.Instead, focus more on the outside world, and that will help build your confidence as other people start enjoying your company.
Take care of yourself.Don’t injure your body, don’t make it become your burden, and don’t deny any of the things it needs.Confidence comes from within.Take the time to reflect on your life and look after yourself emotionally. In order to be truly confident, you must value yourself and understand that your happiness is important.
