1 the summary of the story
Paul Baumer, who is a young German ,enlists in the German Imperial Army during the First World War along with his high school friends after being indoctrinated by their teacher with the glory and superiority of German culture. After surviving training camp the enthusiastic young men board a troop train bound for the front line, thinking that the war would be a great adventure. Paul and his friends discover what they believe in before are wrong completely as the members of the class are killed in the war one by one until only Paul remains. He begins to rethink about the great harm that war brings to the common people not only them but also the French people, and he becomes to hostile the war. One day he is hit by the stray bullet when he tries to draw a bird which perches on the branch beside the trench while the battle report of that day writes “all quiet on the western front”.

Paul paints the second bird which perches on the branch without hesitation although he is still on the battlefield.
