The author has a reason for writing the passage: the author want to present an argument, to convey an attitude, to express an idea, or to give information.
The Topics:
Love to us human is what water to fish. Love shines the most beautiful light of humanity, we born in it, we live by it. Too often we take it as granted, but we should know love is a priceless gift we should cherish. But how to cherish the love? I have heard a saying :the quickest way to receive love is to give it; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly the best way to keep love is to give it wings.

Please turn to page 141 Read and answer the questions.
Often writers express the main idea of a paragraph in a topic sentence. If a topic sentence has been included in a paragraph, it is usually the most general statement. The rest of the sentences are usually more specific, supporting the general statement or main idea expressed in the topic sentence by giving detail and explanation. Usually the writer places the topic sentence at the beginning of the paragraph, but it can come in the middle or the end.
1. What is the main idea of a passage? 2. What is the topic of a reading passage?
Main Ideas (a full sentence)

有个村子很穷,小伙们都很难娶媳妇。小伙 带过很多女孩回家认门,都由于买不起房子, 最终都没修成正果。总结了前面的阅历教训, 于是他买了桶红漆,从村头到自己家的路上, 见平坦一点的墙就都刷个大大的“拆”字。 后来他就结婚了。
Main idea: the author’s viewpoint on the subject, expressed in sentences. “What is the author telling me about this subject?”
Some books read in childhood are truly unforgettable. Some of the characters, the places, the adventures experienced with so much excitement when one is quite young, stay in one’s mind as long as memory lasts. Such a character is Long John Silver in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Who could ever forget him as he walked along the decks of his ship as quick on his crutch as other men with two good legs? As for Alice, who could ever forget her as she talked with the caterpillar and argued with the ill-tempered queen? She remains forever as a child in memory. Childhood’s memories of Tom Sawyer and the joy Tom and his pals had remained clear in spite of the passage of time. Who would give up these perfect childhood memories?
What is the author telling me about this subject?
What does the author want me to remember about this subject?

The process of machine translation is complex. To translate a document from English into Japanese, for example, the computer first analyzes an English sentence, determining its grammatical structure and identifying the subject, verb, objects, and modifiers. Next, the words are translated by an EnglishJapanese dictionary. After that, another part of the computer program analyzes the resulting awkward jumble of words and meanings and produces an intelligible sentence based on the rules of Japanese syntax and the machine’s understanding of what the original English sentence meant. Finally, the computer produced translation is polished by a human bilingual editor.
