Ⅱ.阅读理解(共8小题;每小题2分,满分16分)
A
About five years ago I started at a new school when my family moved to Iowa.I was just a
little excited, but I worried I would never fit in with the other sixth graders. Lucy,a girl in my class, who I thought was not ready for change, didn’t like me from the
start. In fact,I was pretty sure she hated me.I would ask her a question, and I could tell she thought
I was a total fool.
My teacher made us sit by each other for the last term.Lucy was horrified(惊骇的).I didn’t
wear makeup(化妆品),and I didn’t wear those terrible bellbottom pants.I didn’t exactly look
like the coolest girl. But I kept smiling at her, though she rolled her eyes, and I kept telling her she
looked beautiful, even when she was angry.
Finally,Lucy let me talk to her, even in sight of her “cool” friends, she started telling me how
beautiful I looked.I still remember that first time when she smiled at me saying that, and I smiled
right back, telling her thanks.Lucy invited me over to her house for a party, and talked to me all
the time instead of her other friends.Lucy, the girl who hated me,called me her best friend. After
that,we still were good friends a whole year later.
I may have moved to Arizona after that, but I will never forget Lucy. It’s funny—I still
remember her birthday. She was a great friend. And to think, she considered me her enemy
at
first.Though it was hard, and it felt like I was wasting my time, and losing my dignity(尊严),I still
smiled at Lucy when she made fun of me.I’m not stupid,I didn’t think she was right in doing
those things, but I still put up with(忍耐)it.And we became great friends.
About two weeks ago,I read a sentence by Abraham Lincoln:“Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?” Immediately,I smiled, thinking of Lucy. That sentence
just reminded me how great it was for me to change Lucy into my friend in that state of Iowa five
years ago.
16.When the author started at a new school in Iowa, she worried ________. A.she looked stupid when asking questions
B.she didn’t look like the coolest girl in her class

D.she could’t get along well with her classmates
17.How did the author change Lucy’s attitude towards her?
A.By wearing makeup.
B.By keeping smiling at Lucy.
C.By wearing bellbottom pants.
D.By sitting beside Lucy in class.

A.it was right of her to suffer when making friends
B.it was a waste of time to make friends with Lucy
C.it was a shameful thing to put up with what Lucy did
D.it was foolish of her to smile at Lucy all the time
19.What is the main idea of this passage?

D.Kindness can defeat any enemy.

Facing the threat of the Internet, the traditional newspaper is thinking about what it can do to
meet the challenge. To make teens get into the habit of reading, the French government is
considering what kind of efforts it should pursue. It seems that the two questions have nothing to
do with each other, but a recent announcement made by French President Nicolas Sarkozy has
connected these two issues together. The announcement gives an answer to both of them. President Nicolas Sarkozy announced a rescue plan for France’s ailing print media, including
measures to save printing and distribution costs. The plan also gives French teenagers a surprise as
their 18yearold birthday gift:France will offer all 18yearolds a free daily copy of the
newspaper of their choice.
“The habit of reading the press should start at a very young age.” Sarkozy said, presenting the
conclusion after talking to a group of journalists and officials in Paris. The President said the
newspapers themselves would provide free copies for 18yearolds,while the state would cover
the cost of delivering them to many thousands of homes.
The plan is an attempt to introduce teenagers, who frequently only get their news online,to
the delights of the printed world.A similar idea has been tested by L’OuestFrance(法兰西本部
报)over the past few years. It offered some 18 to 24yearolds a free paper once a week for a
year.L’OuestFrance reported that 15% of young people wanted to continue with a paid subscription(订阅)after the year was over.
People in France welcomed the plan which should get more kids interested in current affairs
and make reading be a pastime,as well as rescue the newspaper industry. 20.What does the underlined word “ailing”(in Paragraph 2) probably mean? A.newly established B.in difficult situations
C.most pupular D.warmhearted
21.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.the government will pay for the delivery of newspapers to 18yearolds
B.the government will buy newspapers for 18yearolds for one day
C.some of the government officials are against the plan
D.President Nicolas Sarkozy would like to help the government
22.What is people’s reaction to the plan in France?
A.They think it a waste of money.
B.They will buy newspaper themselves for 18yearolds.
C.They think highly of it and support it.
D.They are worried the young will leave the Internet.
23.Which of the following can serve as the best title for the passage?
A.A Surprising Plan from the President
B.Help Rescue the Newspaper Industry
C.Form the Reading Habit for the Young
D.Free Newspapers Fly to Teens
