Passage 01
热点话题一 淄博烧烤
Recently, “college students going to Zibo for barbeque” and “taking a high-speed train to taste Zibo barbeque” have become hot topics on Chinese social platforms. Zibo barbecue offers a distinctive dining experience. On each table is a small stove. Customers can process skewers(肉串) themselves and then wrap them in a thin pancake, usually with a spring onion inside. The experience of making “Zibo barbecue” offers a sense of participation and leisure time for diners.
Data from Meituan and Dazhong Dianping shows that booking volume for accommodation in Zibo during the five-day May Day holiday is 800 percent higher than that in 2019. Local media in Zibo said the number of passengers arriving and departing through Zibo railway station has reached 50,000 a day, setting a record in the past three years, with most of them being tourists who come to taste Zibo barbecue. The local government has grasped the chance brought by the sudden trend, to attract more tourists. As early as March 10, it has set up prizes for barbecue shops that are popular among tourists, established a barbecue association, and announced the opening of a barbecue festival during the May Day holiday. In order to encourage people to visit the city, Zibo set up a specially customized “barbecue map”, and added 21 new barbecue bus lines, so that tourists can “get on the bus to rest, get off to eat”.
“Barbecue and tourism have limited influence on stimulating the economy. But this is an opportunity for more people to get to know Zibo’s enthusiasm and business environment, which will attract more investment and create more jobs. This is what really matters,” Wang Dazhuang, a local Zibo citizen said. At present, the biggest problem is that the passenger flow is too big for this city so that many owners of barbecue restaurants are trying to expand their barbecue scale, according to an owner of a barbecue restaurant.

Developed by US company Open AI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create recipes(食谱), translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned(禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT.

Each year, Lunar New Year is symbolized by one of 12 zodiac animals.
This is based on a story about the Jade Emperor trying to find a way to measure time. He told the animals they were to compete in a race. The first 12 animals to complete the race would be rewarded by having a year named after them. These animals are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

In traditional Chinese Culture. Rabbits are quiet and agile(敏捷的), which suits traditional Chinese aesthetic(审美的) values of being gentle and cultivated(有教养的). There is a view in Chinese culture that rabbits are smart and gentle. This is shown by the phrase “dong ru tuo tu”, a Chinese idiom used to describe people who are as smart

Passage 05
热点话题五:减少碳排放,环境保护
Climate change is a big problem humans are facing. How can we deal with it? Reducing carbon emissions (碳排放) is important. But what if we could capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and use it to do other things?
Recently, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said that his company is working on a new program. It’s going to take CO2 out of the air and turn it into rocket fuel.
It will not only be good for Earth, but “will also be important for Mars,” Musk said. The air on Mars is made up of 95 percent CO2. If we could turn CO2 into fuel, we could travel the long journey from Mars back to Earth in the future.
The idea may sound strange but it’s not totally crazy. There are already some technologies that might help with this. According to Di-Jia Liu, a chemist at the Argonne National Laboratory in the US, the carbon atoms (原子) in CO2 and the hydrogen (氢) atoms in water can be combined to make methane (甲烷) or ethanol (乙醇). They could be used as fuel. If we do this on Mars, energy from the sun might be used as a catalyst (催化剂).
The idea will also make space travel more eco-friendly. “If the CO2-based fuel could be used in a rocket launch, we could prevent 715 tons of CO2 from being put into the air,” said Stafford Sheehan from Air Company, a US company that focuses on CO2 collecting technologies.
( )1. What is SpaceX working on?
A. Reducing CO2 emissions.
B. Building a new rocket.
C. Turning CO2 into fuel.
( )2. What advantage will the program bring if it succeeds?
A. It will take energy from the sun.
B. It will make it easier to travel from Mars to Earth.
C. It will take 95 percent of CO2 out of the air.
( )3. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How CO2 can be turned into fuel.
B. Where CO2 can be taken.
C. How the energy from the sun can be used.
( )4. What can we learn from what Stafford Sheehan said?
A. Scientists use 715 tons of CO2 to launch a rocket.
B. There will be no CO2 emissions anymore.
C. SpaceX’s idea would be good for the environment.
