Just like today, ancient Romans’ hairstyles changed according to fashion. All freeborn Roman women grew their hair long as short hair was a sign of slavery, or the state of being a slave. (In fact, slaves, who were owned by someone and had no freedom, worked in all areas of Roman life except public office.) Later on, most women wore their hair smoothed down and tied back. Roman men—both freemen and slaves—usually wore short hair, and were mostly cleanshaven (刮得很干净), except when they were old.
Most Romans were born with dark brown hair, but fashionable people liked yellow hair, because it was unusual. So Roman women often used vinegar to change the colour of their own hair.
And ancient Romans, who loved pale, smooth skin, painted their faces. Just like people today, both women and some men wore lots of makeup. They used chalk powder as face powder and they painted their lips with plant juice, which served the same purpose as modern lipsticks. (The first modern lipsticks were made by a French pany at the end of the 19th century.)
Believe it o r not. Romans had to pay a terrible price for beauty. Going to the hairdresser’s could be very painful. In Roman times, sharp scissors had not been invented, so hairdressers used shears (tools used for cutting the wool off a sheep) to cut hair and men’s be ards. When a smooth, closeshaven look was in fashion hairdressers had to pull men’s beards out by the roots. one hair at a time!
Roman bs were made from bone or wood. Like bs today, they were designed to smooth and keep hair in order, and were sometimes worn to make them look pretty. But they had another, less attractive purpose. They were used for bing out all the little lice(虱子).

47.What is the text mainly about?

C.Different ancient Roman hairstyles. D.Why Romans used a lot of makeup.
