James Cleverland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleverland when he was 9.There,a school teacher asked the youth his name.
“J.C.”he replied.
She thought he had said, "Jesse" ,and he had a new name.
Owens ran his first race at 13.After high school,he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part-time to pay for his education. As a second-year student,in the Big Ten games in 1935,he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later.
A week before the Big Ten meet,Owens accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet.He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try,and the results are in the record's book.
The stage was set for Owens' victory in the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his success would come to be regarded as not only athletic but also political.Hitler did not congratulate any of the African-American winners.
“It was all right with me,” he said years later. “I didn't go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway.”
Having returned from Berlin,he received no telephone call from the President of his own country, either. In fact,he was not honored by the United States until 1976,four years before his death.
Owens' Olympic victories made little difference to him.He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles and dogs."Sure it bothered me," he said later. "But at least it was an honest living.I had to earn."
In time, however, his gold metals changed his life. "They have kept me alive over the years," he once said, "Time has stood still for me.That gold moment dies hard."
5. Owens got his other name "Jesse" when_____.

D. he won gold medals in the Big Ten meet

time because _____.

C. he didn't shake hands with Hitler
D. he didn't talk to the US President on the phone
8. When Owens says "Sure,it bothered me," he means that _____ bothers him.

B. receiving no congratulations from Hitler in the Olympic Games in Berlin
C. not being honored by the United States for a rather long time

How many teeth have you had filled in the past two years? If you follow the advice of
Dr. Fustic, you may be able to reduce the number of your visits to a dentist.Dr. Fustic made a two-year survey to find out how to prevent or reduce dental decay(龋齿),946 students took part in the experiment.523 students cleaned their teeth within ten minutes' eating. When possible, they used the toothbrush. When it was possible, they washed their mouths thoroughly with water. The remaining 423 students nearly cleaned their teeth when they went to bed and when they got up in the morning. All of the students had their teeth X-rayed at the end of the first and second years. At the end of the first year, the night and morning group had three times as many decayed teeth as the "cleaned after each meal"group. At the end of the second year, the latter group had 63% fewer
decayed teeth than the former group.
Dr.Fustic has cleaned his teeth after every meal for 13 years, and has not had a single decayed tooth. He pointed out that sugar is a major agent(因素) in dental decay, particularly the sugar in sweets.cakes and soft drinks.Ideally.you should keep a toothbrush in your pocket and use it immediately after you have finished eating. When this is impractical, you can at least make sure that you have a drink of water and let the water through your teeth to force out any particles of food.Seven out of ten people lose at least half their teeth by the time they are fifty. Many have a complete set of false teeth by that time.In any case, neither toothache nor the visit to the dentist is very pleasant. So it is worthwhile making an effort to keep your own teeth as long as possible. The main preventive (预防的) agent is simply water.
9. According to the passage, what type of food or drink is most likely to cause dental decay?
A. Coca Cola.
B. Milk.
C. Meat.
D. Fried chicken.
10. What does the passage tell us about the condition of Dr. Fustic's teeth?
A. He has had thirteen decayed teeth.
B. He doesn't have a single decayed tooth.
C. He has fewer decayed teeth than other people of his age.
D. He never had a single tooth pulled out before he was fifty.
11. What does Dr. Fustic suggest to prevent dental decay?
A. Brush your teeth right before you go to bed in the evening.
B. Have as few of your teeth pulled out as possible.
C. Have your teeth X-rayed at regular time.
D. Clean your teeth shortly after eating.
12. According to the passage, which of the following is True?
A. Fewer people lose their teeth by the time they are fifty.
B. The night and morning group has fewer decayed teeth than the "cleaned after
each meal" group.
C. Water is the main preventive agent in teeth protection.
D. Students don't like to have the teeth experiment.

Self-employed private physicians(医生) who charge for each patient visit are the foundation( 基础) of medical practice in the US.Some medical doctors are on salary.Salaried physicians may work as hospital staff members, who are often still in training. They may teach in medical schools,be hired by companies to care for their workers or work for the federal(联邦) government's Public Health Service.
Some hospitals belong to a city,a state or,in the case of veteran (退伍军人的)hispitals,a federal government agency.Others are operated by churches or other non-profit groups.
Physicians are among the best paid professionals in the US.In the 1980s,it was not uncommon for medical doctors to earn incomes of more than $100,000 a year.Specialists, particularly surgeons(外科医生),might earn several times that amout.Physicians list many reasons why they should be so well rewarded for their work. One reason is the long and expensive preparation required to become a physician in the US.Most would be physicians first attend college for four years, which can cost nearly $20,000 a year at one of the best private colleges or universities.Prospective(预期的)physicians then attend medical school for another four years.Tuition(学费) alone can be over $30,000 a year.By the time they have gotten their medical degrees, many young physicians are deeply in debt. They still face three to five years of residency (住院医生实习期) in a hospital, the first year as an learner physician. The hours are long and the pay is low.
Setting up a medical practice is expensive, too.Sometimes several physicians will decide to
establish a group practice,so they can share the expense of maintaining an office and buying equipment. These physicians also take care of each other's patients in emergencies.
Physicians work long hours and must accept a great deal of responsibility. Many medical processes, even quite simple ones, involve risk.It is understandable that physicians want to be well rewarded for making decisions which can mean the difference between life and death.
13. The preparation for becoming a physician in the US can be as long as _____.
A. eight years
B. thirteen years
C. ten years
D. fifteen years
14. Several physicians set up a group medical practice mainly because _____.
A. there are too many patients for one physician to take care of
B. they can take turns to work long hours
C. one physician can hardly afford to start a medical practice
D. they can earn more money
15. Which of the following is the reason why physicians in the US should be so well
rewarded for their work?_____.
A. It is long and expensive preparation required to become a physician
B. Setting up a medical practice is expensive
C. Physicians work long hours and must accept a great deal of responsibility.
D. All of the above
