第二:阅读理解〔共25小题,每题2分,总分值50分〕
第一节:阅读以下短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最正确选项
A
Online Communication
In an age when technology moves faster than most can keep up with, a small group of people still remain in the time of old-fashioned letter. Frankly speaking, I was once certain that traditional letters could never be replaced by other means of communication.
But a story about online communication changed my mind.
An old man, who suffered a lot from Parkinson’s disease, was not able to talk clearly and could hardly write his name. Living totally alone, he managed to keep in touch with nearly all the members of his family. How did he achieve this? He clicked out words on his computer keyboard.
I, therefore, managed to get an E-mail box as soon as the opportunity came. My life changed. E-mail, and all online communication, is something truly different. It has capabilities that few other products can match.
E-mail is convenient. It takes less time with its fast speed and 24-hour connection. The slow postal service is no match. If you wouldn’t want to have a face-to-face talk with your manager, you might talk with him through E-mail even if you are in the same office.
Naming all the good things about online communication is not easy. But wait. E-mail can be inconvenient. It can waste time and energy. Just think what may happen when you take a short vacation and return to find your e-mail box filled with 200 unread messages. You could easily spend half a day clearing junk ads.
Then, online communication will keep us staying at our computer while it connects us to distant strangers. Once we throw ourselves into the machine, we may forget the human touches we
once held so dear. I’m sure there is and always will be a place for the old-fashioned letter, phone call, and face-to-face meeting… even in the world of modern communication.
As I listen to the sound of the modem(调制解调器), I was excited at stepping out to the outside world but, at the same time, I sensed a loss of control over something valuable in my personal life.
41. What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word “junk〞 in paragraph7?
A. old and useless
B. New and useful
C. Short but valuable
D. Long but clear
42. What caused the writer to become interested in E-mail and online communication?
A. The sound of the modem.
B. His own illness.
C. The changing of his life.
D. A sick old man’s experience.
43. What does the writer think of online communication?
A. It should replace old-fashioned letters completely.
B. It is perfect and always does good to you.
C. It is extremely useful and convenient, but it may be inconvenient or even harmful.
D. It does more harm than good.
44. According to the writer, traditional means of communication will never disappear because ________.
A. they are convenient and popular though they are slow
B. they help to keep the friendly relationship between people
C. most people cannot keep up with the development of technology
D. modern means of communication does too much harm
45. How did the sick old man keep in touch with his family members?
A. With the help of his computer.
B. By writing letters with his pen.

Research shows that humans switch from selfish to unselfish behaviour when they are watched. Do you?
A picture of a set of eyes on a computer screen can cause a change in the way people act. Even images of eyes on a charity donation, collection box encourage people to be unselfish, because people put more money in a collection box that has a picture of eyes on it than they do when a flower symbol is on the box.
Manfred Milinski from the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Germany and Bettina Rockenbach of the University of Berlin, the authors of a new study, found that people act better when they are being watched because they feel they will be rewarded for good behaviour. Their report also referred to other research showing that this response of behaving well when watched is somehow coded into humans and people respond this way unconsciously, or without realising it.
It is not just humans that act unselfishly when they are being watched. A fish called the
grooming fish cleans other fish. When other fish are around, it is gentler. When no other fish are around, however, the grooming fish bites chunks from the fish it is supposed to be cleaning.
The researchers suggest that the best way to get people to behave in the correct way is to make them feel watched. This could be the reason for the success of a famous American army poster. On it was a picture of an elderly man staring fiercely and pointing, it appeared, to the person who was looking at the poster. Under the picture was the caption 'I Want You' It encouraged hundreds of thousands of young American men to join the army during the Second World War to fight the Germans and Japanese.
46.According to the report, why does a person behave better when he feels he is being watched?
A.He does not want to be shamed by others.
B.He needs to show he is a good person.
C.He desires others to like him more.
D.He feels he will receive some social reward.
47.The underlined word 'coded' (paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to .
A.hidden B.programmed C.forgotten D.leaned
48.What is the text mainly about?

C.It tells how to make people work harder.
D.It discusses different advertising methods.
49.According to the text, which of the following statements is true?
A.People pretend to behave better when they are watched.
B.Fish bite other fish in a fish tank when they are alone.
C.People donate more money when they feel they are watched.
D.Soldiers fought better during World War II because of a poster.
50.Where would the study described in the text most likely be found?
A.In a newspaper. B.In a scientific journal.
C.In an advertising magazine. D.In a science textbook.

When I was fifteen, I announced to my English class that I was going to write and illustrate my own books. Half the students laguhed. T he rest nearly fell out of their chairs laughing. “Don’t be silly, only geniuses can become writers,〞 the English teacher said, “And you are getting a D this semester.〞 I was so humiliated(羞辱) that I burst into tears.
That night I wrote a short sad poem about broken dreams and mailed it to the Capri’s Weekly newspaper. To my astonishment, they published it and sent me two dollars. I was a published and paid writer. I showed it to my teacher and fellow students. They laughed. “Just plain dumb luck,〞the teacher said. I tasted success. I’d sold the first thing I’d ever written. That was more than any of them had done and if it was just dumb luck, that was fine with me.
During the next two years I sold dozens of poems, letters, jokes and recipes. By the time I graduated from high school, with a C minus average, I had scrapbooks filled with my published work. I never mentioned my writing to my teachers, friends or my family again. They were dream killers and if people must choose between their friends and their dreams, they must always choose their dreams.
I had four children at the time, and the oldest was only four. While the children slept, I typed on my ancient typewriter. I wrote what I felt. It took nine months, just like a baby.
A month later Crying Wind, the title of my book, became a best seller, was translated into fifteen languages and Braille and sold worldwide. I appeared on TV talk shows. I traveled from New York to California and Canada on promotional tours. My first book also became required reading in native American schools in Canada.
People ask what college I attended, what degrees I had and what qualifications I have to be a writer. The answer is: “None.〞I just write. I’m not a genius. I’m not gifted and I don’t write right. To all those who dream of writing, I’m shouting at you: “Yes, you can. Yes, you can. Don’t listen to them.〞I don’t write right but I’ve beaten the odds. Writing is easy, it’s fun and anyone can do it. Of course, a little dumb luck doesn’t hurt.
51. Why did many students laugh after hearing what the writer said?
A. Because they didn’t like him
B. Because they wished he could be successful as a writer
C. Because their teacher laughed, too
D. Because they felt it impossible for him to succeed
52. When the writer graduated from high school, ___________.
A. he had become a famous writer
B. he had made progress in his studies.
C. his classmates and teachers changed their attitudes towards him
D. he decided he wouldn’t become a writer
53. What prevented him telling others about his writing?
A. The characters in his story.
B. His teacher.
C. His early experience.
D. His parents.
54. What can we infer from the passage?
A. It is difficult for a person, who cares about what others say, to succeed.
B. It is important for a person to tell others what he wants to do.
C. It is necessary for a person, who wants to succeed, to take others’ advice.
D. It is impossible for an ordinary person to be a writer in the future.
55. Which of the following is the best title?
A. A famous writer
B. I Hate My Classmates and Teachers
C. I Never Write Right
D. A Genius Can Be a Writer
D
People are being lured(引诱) onto Facebook with the promise of a fun, free service, and don’t
realize that they’re paying for it by giving up loads of personal information. Facebook then
attempts to make money by selling their data〔资料〕 to advertisers that want to send targeted
(目标的)messages.
Most Facebook users don’t realize this is happening. Even if they know what the company is
up to, the y still have no idea what they’re paying for Facebook, because people don’t really
know what their personal details are worth.
The biggest problem, however, is that the company keeps changing the rules. Early on, you
could keep everything private. That was the great thing about Facebook—you could create your
own little private network. Last year, the company changed its privacy rules so that many
things—your city, your photo, your friends’ names—were set, by default〔默认〕, to be shared with everyone on the Internet.
According to Facebook’s vice president Elliot Schrage, the company is simply making changes to improve its service, and if people don’t share information, they have a “less satisfying experience.〞
Some critics think this is more about Facebook looking to make more money. Its original business model, which involved selling ads and putting them at the side of the page, totally failed. Who wants to look at ads when they’re online connecting with their friends?
The privacy issue has already landed Facebook in hot water in Washington. In April, Senator Charles Schumer called on Facebook to change its privacy policy. He also urged the Commission to set guidelines for social-networking sites. “I think the senators rightly communicated that we had not been clear about what the new products were and how people could choose to use them or not to use them,〞 Schrage admits.
I suspect that whatever Facebook has done so far to invade〔侵犯〕our privacy, it’s only the beginning,w hich is why I’m considering deactivating〔撤销〕 my account(账号). Facebook is a handy site, but I’m upset by the idea that my information is in the hands of people I don’t trust. That is too high a price to pay.
56. What do we learn about Facebook from the first paragraph?
A. It is a website that sends messages to targeted users.
B. It makes money by putting on advertisements.
C. It earns money by selling its user’s personal data
D. It provides a lot of information to its users
57. What does the author say about most Facebook users?
A. They don’t know their personal data enriches Facebook
B. They are unwilling to give up their personal information
C. They don’t identify themselves when using website
D. They care very little about their personal information
58. Why does Facebook make changes to its rules according to Elliot Schrage?
A. To help its users make more friends
B. To obey the Federal guidelines
C. To make money by attracting more users
D. To offer better service to its users
59. What does Senator Charles Schumer argue for?
A. Setting guidelines for advertising on websites
B. Setting rules for social-networking sites
C. Stopping sharing user’s personal information
D. Removing ads from all social-networking sites
60. Why does the author plan to stop using his Facebook account?
A. He is dissatisfied with its service.
B. He finds many of its users untrustworthy.
C. He doesn’t want his personal data badly used.
D. He is upset by its frequent rule changes.

书面表达:
One possible student version:
Dear Mr. Wang,
Knowing that our library is going to buy books, I’d like to give some suggestions.
What we need most are popular science books. Usually popular science books explain basic
principles of nature in a simple and interesting way. They help us understand science subjects
better and arouse our curiosity about scientific discoveries.
In addition to reading for knowledge, we read for fun and inspiration. That is why I recommend another category of books:literary books. Classic works, written by masters, present great thoughts through fascinating stories and language. They not only offer us joy and excitement, but also encourage us to think critically.
I’ll be glad if you can consider my recommendation.
Yours sincerely,。
