On February 3rd, 1949, New York Harbor (港)was an exciting place. Many people were there to greet a ship from France. On the ship were 49 French railroad boxcars (火车车厢)filled with gifts from the people of France to the people of America. These boxcars were from the famous Merci Train (Merci: a French word meaning "thank you").
After World War Ⅱ, a lot of factories, roads and farms in France had been destroyed. Many French people had no jobs or money and had little to wear and little to eat. In the winter of 1947, a train was sent across the United States, stopping in cities and towns along the way. At every stop, people gave whatever they could. Factories gave clothing and medicine. Farmers gave food. Families gave money. Even school children gave away their pocket money. All the things were then taken to France by ship.
By 1949, the French had begun to recover (恢复) from the war. The Merci Train was their way of saying "thank you" to America. French people had filled the boxcars with gifts. Most of them were personal, like hand-made toys, children's drawings, or postcards. But the boxcars themselves were perhaps the most meaningful of the gifts. On each car, the French people had painted the pictures of all their 40 provinces, with an American eagle on the front. The boxcars were taken to each state of America, where they were warmly greeted.
Now many of the states still keep their boxcars. Gifts sent by the French people can still be seen in some museums. The Merci Train came out of the war, but it now reminds the world that countries can also work together in peace.

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. The scientists said that these children were often bullied(欺负)by their older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(责备)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends
or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversations. And don't forget-if you are shy, you are not the only one.

Nov 21 is United Nations' World Television Day. While many of us today are familiar with the television, it's actually one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. TV changed the way that we get on with the world. And TV becomes more and more popular since its introduction. In fact, it's said that, by 2021, there will be 1.7 billion homes around the world that have TV at home.
Think about the life before TV. We mostly had to depend on the radio or newspapers to know what was going on in the world. But after TV arrived, the world seemed much smaller. It brought information to our home. People were able to communicate better, solve problems faster and know things happening around the world by watching the news. They could take part in global (全球的)culture—such as, Olympic Games.
But there is also a bad side to TV. It could be said to have destroyed communication as much as it improved it. In the days before television, an ordinary family would have played games or just talked with each other after evening meal. But since then, sitting around the TV quietly has become an evening activity.
Still, the United Nations says that TV "invites people to discover beyond their living rooms", and that is true. But sometimes, this discovery pays the price of refusing to get close to friends.
(1)When is United Nations' World Television Day?
A. July 14.

Up to two thirds of children don't get as much sleep as they should do, and this can make them nervous and slow at school, researchers say.
So how long should young people sleep each night? The answer is between 8 and 10 hours. If you don't get enough sleep at night, you'll have less energy the next day.
But the researchers say many children have missed out on 4,500 hours of sleep by the time they are seven years old. They say that children miss sleep because they have TVs and computers in their rooms, and busy parents don't read to their younger children at night any more. The traditional “bedtime story” helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully. Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms were more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than eight hours' sleep. Even losing one hour's sleep a night can mean that children do less well at school.
German scientists think that your brain keeps working while you're asleep. To show that they were right, they gave two groups of people a problem to work out. One group went to sleep, and the other group stayed awake. The result? The people who slept worked out the answer more quickly, suggesting their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep. So, make sure you get enough sleep tonight, and you'll be at your best tomorrow!
(1)What happens to children at school if they don't get enough sleep?
A. They walk more slowly.
B. They can relax.
C. They watch more TV.

A. how much sleep we need
B. children don't get enough sleep
C. our brains never really go to sleep

A. It helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully.
B. Children lose more sleep.
C. Children have more energy.
D. Children get to sleep later.
(4)Why is it better to sleep in a room without a TV or computer?
A. You can read stories before you go to sleep.
B. You sleep better and get more sleep.
C. You have less energy.
D. Your brain works better.
(5)What did the German scientists' experiment show?
A. Sleep helps children learn to read.
B. Losing sleep means children don't learn well.
C. Your brain works while you are asleep.
