第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)Robots make me nervous—especially the ones which seem to think for themselves. I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, felt the same way.
Gates said in an interview with the social networking and news website Reddit: “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage well.
A few decades after that, though, the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern.”
Well, maybe I don’t have to worry about my computer and kitchen equipment yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off. There’s a terrible thought!
Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil like some we’ve seen in sci-fi movies. What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient. That’s what philosopher Nick Bostrom from Oxford University believes. He says that machines are indifferent to humans and in pursuit of their own goals, the destruction of people might be just additional damage. Bostrom gives us an example: A machine which might have its only goal to produce as many paperclips as possible might look at human bodies as extra material for paperclips and go after you. Because it is, well, a machine, it would not take pity on you.
It’s a good thing that American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and left us his three rules of robotics. They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow the human being to come to harm.
I’m glad my machines at home are “dumb”. All my cleaner wants to take over is
the carpet in my living room. Let’s hope they don’t create an appliance which wan ts to take over the world!
1、The author quoted Bill Gates’ words in Paragraph 2 in order to make the
text________.
A.better-known B.more persuasive
C.better-organized D.more interesting
2、An intelligent paperclip machine would harm us because _______.
A.it is much cleverer than us B.it would take over the world
C.it has the strong feeling of destroying us D.it would see us just as material 3、How does the author feel about Isaac Asimov’s rules of robotics?
A.Optimistic B.Worried
C.Disappointed D.Regretful
4、What does the text mainly focus on?
A.The benefits of future robots. B.The new applications of robots.
C.The concern for super intelligence. D.The popularity of robots in the future. 22.(8分)
Scientists have long known that herbivores (食草动物) affect the plant diversity around them. In highly productive ecosystems, like jungles, animals would favor dominant, fast-growing plants. This would free up nutrients and space, allowing for a greater variety of plants to boom. In contrast, herbivores in regions with low plant biomass, like deserts, would eat whatever they could find, only driving down plant diversity.
Now, a team of scientists has tested this hypothesis(假说). Burkepile, a biology professor in UC Santa Barbara, and his colleagues reviewed 252 studies comparing plant diversity in areas where herbivores were and were not excluded.
Their study revealed that whether herbivores increase or decrease plant diversity depends on what’s on the menu. In general, the correlation (相关性) between herbivory and diversity wasn’t nearly as clear as everyone had expected. However, the team
noticed a much stronger association: when the ecosystem hosted a particularly vigorous species of plant, herbivory seemed to be crucial in maintaining biodiversity.
For instance, grasslands in the tallgrass prairie in the American Midwest tend to be dominated (控制) by fast-growing grasses, such as big bluestem. The team discovered that herbivores had an outsized effect on maintaining biodiversity by keeping big bluestem from taking over dozens of smaller, slower growing plant species. However not all herbivores are on an equal foot. The team found that the connection between herbivory and diversity was particularly strong in grasslands where more animals feed on grass than on herbs and bushes. This seems reasonable, since grasses tend to be the dominant species in grasslands, as the name suggests.
These findings are more than academic. “We’ve seen three decades of really important papers saying that ecosystems work better when you have more species in them,” Burkepile said. “What our data suggests is that herbivores are especially important for maintaining this biodiversity in places where you have a really dominant plant species.” As biodiversity continues to decline worl dwide, conservationists are looking for ways to prevent catastrophic losses. “This suggests that one possible approach to managing ecosystems and biodiversity is to use herbivores to manage these dominant species,” Burkepile added.
1、According to Paragraph 1, how do herbivores help to increase biodiversity?
A.By consuming dominant, fast-growing plants.
B.By destroying jungles and freeing up space.
C.By adding more nutrients to the soil.
D.By eating up low plant biomass.
2、The underlined part in Paragraph 3 most probably implies that ____________. A.herbivory has nothing to do with biodiversity in a given ecosystem
B.herbivores decrease biodiversity in tallgrass-dominated ecosystems
C.small animals help to protect biodiversity in grasslands without bushes
D.the degree to which herbivores affect biodiversity is related to plant species
3、What is the author trying to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.The limitations of the new study.
B.The potential application of the new study.
C.The contradiction between the past view and the new findings.
D.The importance of maintaining ecosystems and biodiversity.

◆ Pine Lake Dog Park
Noteworthy for its place as a rest stop for hundreds of species of birds to fly to and from warmer climates, Pine Lake Park is also prized by city dogs and their owners for their nice hiking paths, picturesque lake suited for swimming, and an off-leash area on the park's west end that lets dogs run free.
◆ Buena Vista Dog Park
At 146 years young, Buena Vista Park is San Francisco’s oldest park. Dogs and owners with plus energy will love burning it on this park’s steep paths and winding staircases. It’s no secret that college is one of the biggest investments. However, that will go to great avail for years to come. Earning scholarships is a great way to help you. The Financial Aid Office at Illinois State helps students identify scholarship opportunities every day. Here is some advice to help you.
Begin in your own backyard
Have you asked your high school or community college financial aid office about scholarships at your school? Many schools have a list of several scholarships right there. Local awards can often be easier to get as the applicant pools are smaller and less competitive. Check with community organizations, banks and credit unions, and large employers who may offer scholarship opportunities in your area.
Find your “hook”
While you’re searc hing, consider what makes you special as a student. Your unique characteristics can help your scholarship applications stand out. Pay special attention to awards that mention your best qualities, whether that’s academic achievement, leadership, community service, or something less common. Think about why a donor wants to assist you in paying for your education. Most scholarship providers want to encourage a particular behavior. Companies may want to attract future employees.
Non-profit organizations like helping those who support their cause or suffer from the disease they’re working to fight.
Develop a routine
Every scholarship is different in terms of when you can apply, what you need to submit, when the winner is announced, and how the money is given to you. Typically? scholarship applications open in the late fall or early spring for the next school year’s awards, but that also varies depending on the donor. There isn’t a single application or search engine that allows you to find and apply for everything. Visit the website of the Office of Student Financial Aid for lists of scholarship opportunities. Go through the lists to find the ones that match you best and keep track of when you can apply for them.
1、What can we learn from the passage?

3、The author suggests applying for scholarships locally because .
A.the community offers more scholarships
B.fewer students think of doing that
C.your high school will be ready to help
D.it is relatively easy to get scholarships
4、What kind of students do the scholarship providers want to help?
A.Students who only take interest in their studies.
B.Students who plan to do community service.
C.Students who are eager to get a good education.
D.Students who are considered of high qualities.
25.(10分)Bats are the only mammals(哺乳动物) that can fly a great distance, but they have another ability. Many bats live a very long time for an animal of their size. European researchers are studying bats to understand why they lives0 long. They hope to make discoveries aimed at fighting the aging process in human beings.
Last week, the group of scientists said they had identified important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied bat chromosomes(染色体), a line of genes found in the nucleus(细胞核) of cells. The scientists were most interested in structures connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres(端粒), which protect the ends of chromosomes and shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to breakdown. They say this is what causes aging.
The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals ,the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived the longest, an average of 37 years. The
scientists said this and a related species, which are grouped together under the name Myotis, had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for oldest age, reaching 41years. The sc ientists’ findings suggest that these bats cells have the ability to maintain and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps guard against the aging process.
Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that. The scientists found that only 19 species of mammals live longer than humans when their body size is considered. Eighteen of these are bats.
1、European researchers are studying bats mainly hoping to .
A.learn the living habit of bats.
B.find out why bats enjoy a long life.
C.try to understand why bats can fly as a mammal
D.discover a good way to prevent human beings from aging.
2、What does the second paragraph mainly explain to us?
A.The structures of bats’ chromosomes.
B.What cause aging biologically.
C.The functions of telomeres.
D.What causes cells to break down.
3、The greater mouse-eared bat and Myotis bat live so long because . A.they are grouped together under the name Myois
B.their telomeres are decreasing with age
C.their ells are able to keep up and fix their telomeres
D.their bodies produce more telomeres than human beings
4、From the last paragraph, we can infer that. .
A.bats live 10 times longer that human beings
B.bats enjoy the longest life among mammals
C.bats like the greater mouse-eared bat should have lived longer
D.Most bats live longer than human beings considering their body size
