So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for children that which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that
“reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”.
Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to plan cleverly the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also a public activity: It can be seen and observed.
Learning to read involves all that each individual does to understand the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny.
If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the long search for knowledge? Smith has one principle rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”
When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them properly, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is got rid of. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the chance to solve the problem of learning to read by learning.
56. The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that_______.
A. too much time is spent in teaching about reading
B. reading tasks are given with little guidance
C. it is one of the most difficult school courses
D. students spend limited hours in reading

A. teachers can make their teaching activities observable
B. teachers can teach their students how to read
C. teachers can improve conditions at school for the students
D. teachers can enable students to develop their own way of reading
58. The word “scrutiny” (Paragraph 3) most probably means “_______”.
A. unbelief
B. control
C. inquiry
D. observation
59. The main idea of the passage is that_______.
A. reading is more complicated than believable

B
Last year, a report by a committee of education experts said that a lot of American students cannot write well. The report noted the concerns(担心)of business leaders and teachers. The experts said that more students should have to pass a writing test before they can finish high school. They pointed out that major college entrance tests are changing now to include a writing part.
Educators know that teaching students to write well is not easy. One problem is the amount of time needed to read through large amounts of work. So some companies have developed computer programs. These can grade students writing more quickly than a person can. Writing tests can also cost less to carry out by computer than paper-and-pencil. These computer systems are known as e-readers. They use artificial
intelligence to think in a way like teachers. In the State of Indiana, computer grading of a statewide writing test began with a test of the system itself. For two years, both a computer and humans graded the student writing. Officials say there was almost no difference between the computer grades and those given by the human readers.
The entrance test commonly used by business schools, the GMA T, already uses e-readers. The GRE and TOEFL tests might start; officials are deciding. The GRE is the Graduate Record Examination. TOEFL is the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
Systems are also being used to grade writing in college classes. The computers read a few hundred examples of student writing already graded by humans. Then the systems compare new writing against those already examined.
How do teachers feel all about this? Many say machines can never do the job as well as people can. A computer can find spelling and grammar mistakes. But these teachers say it can never really understand what a writer is trying to say. Critics say a program cannot follow a thought or judge humor or understand a beautifully expressed idea.
But inventors of the programs say computer grading guarantees that each piece of writing is graded in the same way. They also say the systems are meant to judge knowledge more than creativity.
60. From the first paragraph we can conclude that _________.
A. American students’ writing ability is being improved
B. American students’ writing ability is not satisfactory
C. business leaders and teachers are not worried about American students’ writing
D. all college entrance tests will include a writing part
61. What do the teachers think of the computer system?
A. They think highly of the computer systems.
B. They think that computers cannot grade writing as well as people.

Chinese are very generous (慷慨) when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet(芭蕾舞), or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.
Parents can see that their children’s skills vary, skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence (自信).
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands
patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse(唤起)his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.
67. Parents in China, according to this passage, _______.
A. are too strict with their children in educating them
B. are too rich to educate their children in every field
C. have some problems in educating their children correctly
D. are too poor to educate their children to be self-confident

B. the education system given to the children

D. children’s hobbies that they were born with
69. Doing some cooking at home helps children ______.
A. learn how to serve their parents
B. learn how to become strong and fat
C. benefit from it and prepare themselves for the future
D. make their parents believe that they are clever
70. According to the last paragraph we can conclude that ______.
A. broken radios and television sets are useful
B. one’s curiosity may be useful for his later life
C. an engineer must fix many broken radios
D. a good student should spend much time repairing radios
笫II卷非选择题(满分35分)
第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。
注意:每空只填1个单词。
Naturally regulate your sleep-wake cycle
Melatonin(褪黑激素)is a naturally occurring hormone(激素)that helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle.Melatonin production is controlled by light exposure.Your brain should produce more in the evening, when it's dark, to make you sleepy, and less during the day when it's light and you want to stay awake. However, many aspects of modern life can disturb your body's natural production of melatonin and your sleep-wake cycle.
Spending long days in an office away from natural light, for example, can impact your daytime wakefulness and make your brain sleepy. Then bright lights at night—especially from hours spent in front of the TV or computer screen—can hold back your body's production of melatonin and make it harder to sleep, However, there are ways for you to naturally regulate your sleep-wake cycle, improve your body's production of melatonin, and keep your brain on a
healthy schedule.
Increase light exposure during the day
☆Remove your sunglasses in the morning and let light onto your face.
☆Spend more time outside during daylight.Try to take your work breaks outside in sun light, exercise outside, or walk your dog during the day instead of at night.
☆Let as much light into your home/workspace as possible.Keep curtains and blinds open during the day, move your desk closer to the window.
☆If necessary, use a light treatment box.A light treatment box can create sunshine and can be especially useful during short winter days when there's limited daylight.
Improve melatonin production at night
☆Turn off your television and computer. Many people use the television to fall asleep or relax at the end of the day.Not only does the light hold back melatonin production, but television can actually excite the mind, rather than relaxing it.Try listening to music or audio books, or practicing relaxation exercises. If your favorite TV show is on late at night, record it for viewing earlier in the day.
☆Don't read from a backlit device at night (such as an iPad). If you use a portable electronic device to read, use an eReader that is not backlit, i.e.one that requires an additional light source such as a bedside lamp.
☆Change your light bulbs.Avoid bright lights before bed, use low-wattage bulbs instead.
☆When it's time to sleep, make sure the room is dark. The darker it is, the better you'll sleep.Cover electrical displays, use heavy curtains or shades to block light from windows, or try an eye mask to cover your eyes.
☆ Use a flashlight to go to the bathroom at night. As long as it's safe to do so, keep the light to a minimum so it will be easier to go back to sleep.

These years, independent enrollment is more and more popular and it has caused a lot of debate.
People’s views on that var y from person to person.
Many people support it. To begin with, it provides both colleges and students an extra opportunity. All outstanding students have easier access to their dream universities without too much worry. For the universities, they can enroll talented students in another way. To continue with, the new policy encourages students to develop overall instead of paying only attention to scores. At the same time, it can also reduce the enormous stress of the college entrance examination effectively.
However, many others disagree with the policy. In their opinion, many rich and powerful parents will make use of their power and money to get a chance for their children, which is totally unfair to other students. Also, in order to prepare for it, you have to spend much money and time on it while only a few will succeed. It’s not worthwhile at all.
Personally, I am for the reform.. For one thing, it means college entrance exams are not the only way to get access to university. Two chances are always better than one. For another, it will be beneficial to both colleges and students as long as it is carried out properly.。
