When I was a young man, I had a big ego (自负)and very little empathy (同理心). I thought I knew everything. I looked forward to fame and success. I can even remember arrogantly telling one of my friends in college: “If only everyone listened to me, they would all be happy.” I finally left school, ready to take on the world. Little did I know the world was about to take on me.
In the years following college, instead of success, I found struggles. I had trouble finding work. The jobs I did work at were either temporary or back-breaking and none of them paid well. When my wife and I had children, we were shocked to learn that not one but both of our sons had autism (自闭症) and would need to be taken care of for the rest of their lives. I had no idea why this had happened to us and I was very angry with the world.
In time, however, I began to change. My formerly massive ego was shrinking fast and my empathy was beginning to grow. Instead of finding joy in success, I found it in moments of love. Playing and laughing with my sons brought me so much happiness. My boys taught me more about peace, patience, kindness, joy, and unconditional love than I could have ever learned on my own. I began to share the lessons I learned through my writing and my life.
I finally realized that my purpose in this world had nothing to do with fame or success and everything to do with allowing love and light into my life and sharing it with everyone I could.

More and more “genetically-modified (GM) food” appear in our lives. But what are they? And most importantly, are they safe or not?
These questions have been back in the spotlight since mid-October. It was revealed then that 61 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering wrote a joint letter to the country’s top leaders in July. They urged the government to push forward the commercial development of GM rice, according to Beijing-based The Mirror.
“Western companies have made great advances in GM food and have significant market shares in the industry. If China doesn’t catch up soon, there is no future for the Chinese agriculture industry,” Huang Dafang, a researcher at Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, told the newspaper.
However, on Oct 25, the city of Zhangye, in Gansu province, banned the growth, sale and use of GM seeds, making it the first city in China to issue (颁发) such a ban, Xinhua reported. The city has long promoted itself as“Golden Zhangye”for its production of corn seeds and organic products. According to the local government, the move is meant to protect the safety of agricultural products.
The safety of GM food is a controversial issue worldwide. Although some studies suggest that it is safe for humans, its long-term health effects are not yet known.
Many countries have certain regulations for producing and selling GM food. For example, in European Union(EU) countries, each GM food must be approved before it can be used. This process can take up to 17 months. It is also required that the origin of all GM food be tracked, and that all food with GM content of more than 0. 9 percent be labeled , according to EU website Europa.
China also has strict rules for GM food. The Ministry of Agriculture issues bio-safety certificates for GM crops it considers safe. The crops with the certificates are some GM types of cotton, rice, corn and papaya (木瓜), said XieJiajian, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, in an interview with People’s Daily on Sept. 16.
China has also issued import certificates for GM soybeans, corn, rape, cotton and beets (甜菜), allowing them to be imported for domestic processing. But they also need bio-safety certificates before going on the market.
“In China, more than half of cooking oil consumed is soybean oil, and 90 percent of that oil is made from GM soybeans,” Wang Xiaoy u, vice secretary general of the Soybean Association of Heilongjiang province ,told Xinhua.
In order to ensur e people’s ability to know what they are eating, China also has a trademark system for GM products, including clear labels, but many GM products in the country are still sold without labels, Xinhua noted.
28. Which of the following is true?
A. GM food has enjoyed great popularity globally
B. GM food has become the mainstream in Chinese markets.

D. EU holds a cautious attitude towards GM food.

B. Eatable GM food will be offered a certificate.

B. Objective.

B. To introduce the measures taken on GM food

Though Grant and I are typically more traditional, we actually met online, through Facebook. As a single mom, it was always a nightmare trying to date, as I have full custody of my daughter and very little “me” time. But that wasn’t the only obstacle we had to overcome as a couple – we also lived four and a half hours away from one another.
