My Experiences with School Clubs
Clubs have been a really big part of my life ever since I started middle school two years ago. When I was younger, I didn't really understand what clubs were or why anyone would want to join one. But now that I've gotten involved in a few different ones, I can definitely see the appeal!
At the start of 6th grade, there was a clubs fair where all the different student organizations set up booths to advertise themselves and try to get new members to join. I remember walking around feeling really overwhelmed by all the choices. There were academic clubs like Math Club, Science Olympiad, and Reading Bowl. There were hobby clubs for things like art, cooking, coding, and gaming. And then there were clubs related to cultures, identities, and causes like Black Student Union, Gender & Sexuality Alliance, and Environmental Club.
Honestly, a lot of the clubs sounded pretty boring or niche to me at first. Like why would anyone want to join a club just
about math or coding outside of class? Aren't we already doing enough of that during the school day? But my parents encouraged me to join at least one, saying it would look good on college applications and help me make friends.
So somewhat reluctantly, I signed up for Art Club since I've always really enjoyed drawing and painting. I figured at least it would be a fun activity, even if it didn't end up being that meaningful otherwise. Little did I know it would quickly become one of my favorite parts of the week!
In Art Club, we got to experiment with all sorts of different mediums like oil pastels, watercolors, clay, and more. We learned techniques from the club sponsor who was an amazing artist herself. And we worked on group projects like murals and displays for the school. It was such a welcoming, creative environment without any of the strict rules or grades we have to deal with in regular art class.
By the end of 6th grade, I had made a bunch of new friends who shared my passion for art. I even started doodling and sketching more in my free time outside of the club. Art Club helped me discover just how much I loved being artistic and expressing myself visually.
When I got to 7th grade, I decided to branch out and join a couple other clubs too. First, I joined Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA) which is a club that brings together LGBTQ+ students and allies. As someone who had recently come out as bisexual, I was really excited to find a supportive community.
The GSA meetings were always so lively and full of interesting discussions. We talked about issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community and how to make our school more inclusive. We did education campaigns like putting up Safe Space stickers around the building. We planned events for major dates like National Coming Out Day. And we just had a space to be ourselves without judgment.
It felt amazing being surrounded by so many other kids who understood what I was going through. LGBTQ+ people are obviously a minority, so it can feel pretty lonely and isolating at times. But GSA showed me I wasn't alone and gave me a chosen family who uplifted me. I'm so grateful that club exists at our school.
The other new club I joined was Environmental Club, mostly on a whim at first. But I quickly found myself really caring about their mission and goals. In Environmental Club, we focused on
ways to make our school and community more sustainable and eco-friendly.
We did things like park clean-ups, tree planting, recycling drives, and fundraisers for environmental organizations. We watched documentaries and had discussions about climate change and other environmental issues. A few members even started a campaign to get rid of single-use plastics like straws, bottles, and bags in our school's cafeteria.
Before that club, I'll admit I didn't know that much about environmental topics beyond the basics we learned in science class. But Environmental Club really opened my eyes to how big of a threat climate change is and how important it is for everyone to do their part. They inspired me to make more eco-conscious choices in my daily life like reducing waste, saving energy, and even eating less meat.
Overall, the different clubs I'm involved in have enriched my middle school experience so much. They've helped me discover new passions, make amazing friends, and learn about important issues I care about. Clubs have given me a bigger sense of community and belonging within my school.
I can't imagine what my life would be like without Art Club nurturing my creative side, GSA providing me with a supportive
LGBTQ+ family, and Environmental Club educating me about ways to create a more sustainable world. Thanks to these clubs, the halls of my school feel much more than just a place to receive an education – they feel like home. Joining clubs has definitely been one of the best decisions I've made so far!

My Favorite Club
Clubs are a huge part of school life and there are so many to choose from. When I started 7th grade, I had no idea which clubs to join. There were sports clubs like soccer, basketball, and swimming. There were academic clubs like math club, coding club, and debate club. And there were hobby clubs like art club, music club, and even a Harry Potter club! With so many options, it was hard to decide.
In the end, I chose to join the Creative Writing Club. I've always loved writing stories and poetry, so it seemed like the perfect fit. Our club meets once a week after school to do writing activities and share our work. I was really nervous the first time I had to read my writing out loud, but everyone was so supportive and gave me great feedback.
One of my favorite activities we did was exploring different writing styles and genres. One week we wrote haikus and tried to capture vivid imagery in just a few words. Another week we did freewriting, just letting our ideas flow for 10 minutes without stopping. We've experimented with science fiction, mystery, romance, and everything in between. It's pushed me to get creative and step outside my comfort zone.
Probably the best part of the club is the sense of community I've found. We all encourage each other and cheer one another on. If someone is feeling stuck or uninspired, the rest of us try to help them work through it. Sometimes we'll take turns building off each other's stories, adding new twists and turns. It's amazing the cool ideas that come out when you collaborate.
We also have fun traditions, like the yearly publication of our club's literary magazine filled with poems, short stories, and artwork from all the members. It's so rewarding to see your writing in print! My dream is to maybe be the editor of the magazine next year.
In addition to the weekly meetings, our club also attends author talks, writing workshops, and literary festivals in the community. We've had the chance to meet so many published authors and poets and learn about their creative process. One of
the coolest experiences was when we went to a poetry slam and some of us even performed our original slam poems on stage!
Another big event we look forward to is the annual Creative Writing Competition. Students from schools across the district submit their work anonymously to be judged by teachers and authors. The winners get their pieces published in a special anthology. Last year, one of the members of our club won 3rd place in the poetry category! We're all hoping to place this year and see our names in that book.
Overall, being part of the Creative Writing Club has been an awesome experience. I've become a stronger writer, made great friends, and got to explore so many fun writing activities. Looking back, I can't imagine how different 7th grade would have been if I hadn't joined.
My advice to any incoming 7th graders is to absolutely get involved with a club! Don't be afraid to try something new. Whether it's a sport, hobby, or academic interest, there is a club out there for you. Getting involved allows you to pursue your passions, make friends with similar interests, and gets you more connected to your school community.
For me, the Creative Writing Club was the perfect choice. But there are so many other great clubs to consider too, like Drama
Club, Coding Club, Environmental Club, and more. Ask current students about their experiences and think about what really excites you. Then take a chance and sign up for that club! It could end up being one of the most memorable and meaningful parts of your middle school experience.

Clubs - The Secret to an Awesome School Year
Hey there! Liam here, just your average 7th grader trying to make the most of middle school. I have to admit, when I first started this year I was pretty nervous. Moving up to the big kid hallways, dealing with harder classes, trying to make new friends - it was a lot to handle! Luckily, I discovered the secret to not only surviving 7th grade, but actually having an awesome year: joining clubs.
I'll never forget that first club fair. Our school had tables set up in the cafeteria, each one representing a different club. There were so many options, it was almost overwhelming! The robotics club, art club, debate club, Harry Potter club (yes, really!)...the list went on and on. How was I supposed to choose?
Well, my friends Sam and Zoe were a huge help. The three of us walked around together, checking out each table. I have to
give Sam props, he was really enthusiastic about this gardening club. Zoe was leaning more towards joining student council. Me?
I was drawn to the chess club's table. I've always loved the game of chess, ever since my dad taught me as a kid. The chess club seemed like such a chill, easygoing group. I could already picture myself hanging out, playing chess with other kids who geeked out over it as much as me.
After a lot of waffling, I decided to join both the chess club and the brand new Rubik's Cube club. Yeah, I'm a bit of a puzzle nerd, sue me! Sam ended up joining gardening as well as the graphic design club to feed his artistic side. Zoe went with student council and her favorite, the book club. Just like that, we were all set with our extracurricular activities.
Those clubs ended up being a total game changer for my 7th grade experience. The chess club was everything I'd hoped - just a group of nerdy kids getting together twice a week to play our favorite game. Our club leader Mr. Ramirez was so nice and always making silly jokes to keep things fun. I definitely improved my skills, but more importantly I made friends with a bunch of other chess lovers.
Meanwhile, Rubik's Cube club was beyond cool. Had you told me a year ago there was a whole club dedicated to solving
that crazy puzzle, I wouldn't have believed you! But there we were, a group of like 15 kids unscrambling Rubik's cubes as fast as we could. I have to admit, some of those kids were scary good - pretty sure they had to be robots or something. Still, the vibe was really chill and the club leader Ms. Perez was super upbeat and encouraging to everyone.
If anything, Sam went even more all-in on his clubs than me. By November, he was president of the gardening club! They did all sorts of amazing projects like planting a butterfly garden behind the school and composting bins for the cafeteria. Sam got the whole group to volunteer helping out at a community garden too. Meanwhile in graphic design club, Sam was designing t-shirts, logos, you name it. His skills really took off.
As for Zoe, she was absolute student council goals. That girl was born to lead! She spearheaded fundraisers, organized events, and made sure every student had a voice. But she still made time for her precious book club too. Whenever I saw her, Zoe always had a new novel she was obsessing over.
To be honest, those clubs did so much more for me than I ever could have imagined. Obviously I picked up new skills and knowledge. In chess club, I learned all sorts of new strategies and tactics. Rubik's Cube club helped me get faster at solving the
puzzle and even taught me the fancier CFOP techniques. But more importantly, they gave me communities to be a part of.
In a school of over 1000 kids, it's so easy to feel invisible and alone. But in those club meetings, I had a squad - a group of people who shared my interests and accepted me. We could just hangout, have fun, and be ourselves without any judgment. Some of my closest friends came out of those clubs.
They also gave me a sense of identity and purpose beyond just being a student. Like, yeah, I'm a 7th grader who has to stress about tests, homework, and all that jazz. But I'm also a chess player, a cuber, a dude who's passionate about puzzles and strategy games. I got the chance to explore those other sides of myself in a low-pressure, just-for-fun environment. Honestly, those clubs kept me sane!
Clubs helped me get through one of the toughest, most stressful periods of my life so far - the daunting transition to middle school. Thanks to chess club and Rubik's Cube club, 7th grade became somewhere I felt like I truly belonged. Sure, the academic side was still challenging at times. But no matter what, I had those clubs - my people, my passions, my home away from home.
So if there's one piece of advice I could give any rising 7th grader out there, it's this: get involved with clubs! They'll enrich your life in ways you never could have imagined. You'll discover new interests, build awesome friendships, and somehow make the chaos of middle school not seem so crazy after all. I'm heading to 8th grade now feeling more confident, well-rounded, and prepared than ever before. All because I look beyond just academics and discovered the incredible communities that clubs have to offer.
Trust me, if an average kid like me can get so much out of joining clubs, imagine what they could do for you! So go out there, explore all the amazing options your school has, and dive into whichever clubs speak to you. Those clubs just might end up being your secret weapon for not just surviving middle school, but making it the most incredible, life-changing experience ever. Best of luck!。
