Kala has deep ties to her Hawaiian roots. Her ancestors navigated (航行) the oceans for centuries using their knowledge of the stars, the sun, the currents and the wind. It’s not that she does it in a canoe without technology, but rather uses the natural technology around her. It’s called Way finding, and was taught to her by her father.
“My father was my foundation, my rock.” she says of her first voyage with him from Oahu to Lahaina in a traditional canoe. He taught her how to read the stars, the ocean swells and how to use them to hold the course. “Over 200 stars have specific names and purposes when you are Way finding. You have to look at each and determine if they are rising or setting. You know this star and the direction it represents. If you can do that, you can use it as a tool to orient (确定方向).” Kala added.
Kala Tanaka sailed the canoe in the ocean for up to three weeks. During the day, Kala used the sun until it hit a certain height. When she got closer to land, she looked for certain species of land birds and clouds that indicated there was land below. When Kala sailed she felt “I feel very connected to the crew and the canoe. We’re a family.” The longer voyage required Kala to spend hours studying the day and the night skies. It was demanding physical work. But it also had its moments of awe. For Kala, the beauty was in tying together the past and the present to enjoy the moment. So when she was not sailing, she was teaching Way finding skills to school-aged children in hopes of preserving the skills her ancestors relied on.
It’s easy to be lost in the immediacy of the technology of our day, to be consumed by screens and miss the nature that unfolds around us. But if we will take the time to look up, to see the stars and the sun, the way the clouds move, the miracle of life beneath and above us, we will discover something deep inside us, something that will always lead to happiness.
4.How does Kala navigate the ocean in a canoe?

The National Center for Education Statistics reports that about one in five adults in the US is illiterate (不识字的) or has poor literacy skills. I Love Books is on a mission to change that.
Founded in 2021, the social organization aims to end illiteracy by making sure that all children have access to books. Through selling clothes and other things online, the organization is able to provide new books for the youth. So far, it has donated more than 3,000 books to pupils across three Kentucky cities.
“One of the difficulties in achieving high literacy for kids living in poverty is that there are no books in their homes or communities. Their schools may not have a lot of books, either,” said Jonathan Beatty, the founder of I Love Books. “If you’re a parent and you have to choose between your meal, rent, or whatever bill that you may need to pay and a book, you’d probably choose the former.”
To increase access to books for future generations, I Love Books hosts a book-giving activity quarterly, working with schools and non-profit organizations. In the first book-giving event, more than 300 children from William Wells Brown Elementary got their own copies of LeBron James’ I Promise, which was read at the school each morning. “Most of the books are well received by teachers and students,” the headmaster of the school told Nice News.
The organization also hosts a program called BAM, which combines books, art, and music.
“What if we show how literacy gives you the ability to write songs or understand music lyrics better? If you want to be an artist, you need to read more about art to create your own.” said Beatty. He believes the program will be attractive to more young people.
8.How does I Love Books get money for its donations?
A.By selling children’s books.
B.By giving speeches in schools.
C.By making a sale of products.
D.By receiving people’s donations.
9.What can we infer from Jonathan Beatty’s words in paragraph 3?
A.Most children show little interest in books.
B.Poor children have limited access to books.
C.Parents know little about their children’s preferences.
D.Schools pay much attention to their students’ education.
10.What did the school headmaster think of the book-giving activity?
A.Satisfying.B.Surprising.C.Interesting.D.Challenging. 11.What is the purpose of the program BAM?
A.To encourage musicians to write their own songs.
B.To develop kids’ ability to draw pictures.
C.To spread literacy among young people.
D.To provide help for poor artists.
A start-up company in California, called Zume, is testing machines that make pizza. The robot takes and shapes dough to create the base of the pizza. It then adds tomato sauce, cheese, meat or other toppings. Next, the robot places the uncooked pizza into a hot oven. A few minutes later, the pizza is ready. The pizza comes out the same each time. Zume says the robots work quickly and do not get sick. The robots do not get paid either.
Julia Collins is the company’s founder and chief executive officer (CEO) . Her business can spend money on better food products because it does not have to pay the robots. Zume is using robots to make pizza.
Charity Suzuki has bought the robot-made pizza. She likes its taste. “It’s delicious. It’s
always hot and fresh when it comes. I mean it’s great that they’re making it, but I can’t tell the difference that it’s made by a robot versus a human.”
Other companies say they are developing robots so people can get higher quality food faster. But what about the jobs the robots are taking from humans?
Ken Goldberg is a professor at the University of California in Berkeley. He also directs the school’s automation laboratory. Goldberg says researchers have been working with robots for 50 years. He says that, while there has been progress, the jobs are not going to disappear right away. “I want to reassure (使放心) restaurant workers that the skills that they have are still going to be of value,” Goldberg said.
“We’re going to get rid of boring, repetitive, dangerous jobs and we’re going to free up people to do things that have higher value. There’s going to be amazing new ways of working that don’t exist yet but are going to be created.”
12.Why can Zume devote more money to better food products?
A.It earns a lot by selling pizza.B.It wants to create more robots.
C.It can save a lot by using robots.D.It hopes to attract more customers. 13.What can we know about the robot-made pizza according to Suzuki?
A.It really agrees with her.B.It is hot and fresh all the time.
C.It is tastier than the man-made.D.It is delicious and free of charge. 14.What’s the benefit of robots’ making pizza?
A.They work efficiently.B.They help sick people.
C.They need few payments.D.They produce more food.
15.What does Goldberg think of the jobs of restaurant workers?
A.Interesting.B.Boring.
C.Dangerous.D.Necessary.
How do you choose a career? For many people, it’s a big and scary question. Deciding on the right career path is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your life. 16 Don’t worry. Here is a practical guide on how to choose a career path.
List your skills.
No matter who you are, I know there are plenty of things that you do well in. Make a list of
every single one that comes to mind. What subjects were you good at in school? What talents do people praise you for? 17 Don’t leave out any skill, even if you don’t think it qualifies as a career skill. You never know how your unique set of strengths could transfer to a job.
Identify your passions.
Passion isn’t just a pipe dream. 18 No one wants to do work that makes them feel like a zombie or a robot without thinking! Finding your passion doesn’t mean the work will always be easy, but it does mean you’ll be fulfilled while doing it. Make a list of the activities that bring you to life, energize you, inspire you, and make you lose track of time.
19
The next factor we need to consider is mission. Who are the people you most want to help? What problems do you want to solve? What causes inspire or concern you? How have you been able to help people in ways that were meaningful to you? These are important questions to ask yourself, because without having a deeper purpose or why behind your work, it will be hard to stay with it in the long term.
Do some research.
20 Here is where you could find out the minimum requirements for each profession educationally, physically and mentally. As you continue your research, prioritize jobs that are in line with your aspirations and dismiss ones that clash or have little in common with your strong attributes.
A.Address your concerns.
B.Figure out your motivation.
C.However, you need to achieve it by every means.
D.These are all clues that tell you what your strengths are.
E.Detailed survey about the listed careers is of great importance.
F.It’s a very real and necessary part of doing a job that’s meaningful to you.
G.With endless career options available, making the right choice can be challenging.

It was exam time at Marc’s school. Every day, their teachers gave them loads of homework
and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in
it. Everyone followed the teachers’ instructions and made preparations for it, except Marc. He just
turned a deaf ear to it. He thought he would rather play football than study.
His mum and dad repeated the importance of revision for exams over and over again. They
told him that he should be working hard preparing for the test. But the weather was sunny and he
thought he had better things to do.
“Shall we go to the park?” he said to his friend Huck one afternoon. “It’s a nice day. We
could play football and kick around.” Huck shook his head. “I’m supposed to review my lessons,”
he said. “I’m going home to do some math.”
Marc was amazed. “You’d rather do math than play football?”
“Math is important. Besides, my mum says she will buy me a mountain bike if I do well in
the math exam.”
“That’s crazy,” said Marc. Huck shrugged (耸肩) and replied, “Wait until I beat you in the
test and you will watch me riding past on my mountain bike!”
“You won’t beat me,” said Marc.
“Oh yes, I will.”
“Oh no, you won’t! That will never happen. Just wait and see!”
For the first time ever, Marc wanted to perform well. He couldn’t bear it if his friend came top and he did badly. So when he got home, he opened his math book. But there was so much to do. All of a sudden, he felt like he’d forgotten everything he had learned that year! He didn’t know where to start. When his sister Lily came in, he was sitting expressionlessly by the desk, just staring out of the window.
