第二周热考话题集训——旅游与交通

A
Dear Jorge,
Are you enjoying your break from school? My family are now in Sacramento, California. We are here paying a visit to my aunt Gloria. We have been to the California State Capitol Building, the nature center, and the zoo. I have seen many interesting things, but one stands out above the rest. This morning we drove from my aunt's home to Calistoga to see California's Old Faithful Geyser (老忠实泉). I had read about it in my book, Sightseeing in California: Where You Should Go. Y ou have probably heard of Old Faithful, the geyser farther north in Yellowstone National Park. This California geyser is sometimes called “Little Old Faithful.”
When we arrived California's Old Faithful was only a calm pool of water. The geyser didn't look very deep. “What's the big deal?” I wondered. As I turned, I saw some steam rising from the water. Before I knew it, there was hot water shooting up about 60 feet into the air. We could not believe our eyes! It continued for almost three minutes.
Aunt Gloria told me that the water came from an underground river. She also said that the water temperature was about 95℃. This water can sometimes shoot 170 feet into the air.
My aunt said that other geysers around the world reach hotter temperatures and shoot water even higher than California's Old Faithful Geyser. I'd love to learn more about this geyser and other geysers in different countries when I get home. I'll see you soon!
Your friend,

A few months after we moved to Tours, France, I wanted to meet my husband, Stéphane, for lunch at the university where he worked. I got lost, so I had to call him. Stéphane's workmate André overheard the conversation and said, “How coul d she get lost? You just go straight.”
I admit I have a horrible sense of direction, can't read a map and am not such a hot driver. But my husband claims that you don't really need a road map or to write down directions to get anywhere in France. You just need to know your destination and look at the signs in the traffic circles. And if you don't see your sign the first time around, you can keep turning around and around until you spot your exit sign.
I suppose.
But as soon as I get into a roundabout I get into a panic and rather than circling to survey my options with a cool head, I exit somewhere, anywhere, just to keep from going round and round.
Six years into our French living experiment, I now have adopted an ideal solution: a GPS (Global Positioning System) program on my smartphone. I rely on it to get just about anywhere, even places I've been to before. This past winter we went to the Alps (阿尔卑斯山) for a skiing vacation and a friend asked me where we went. How could I know? Wasn't “the Alps” precise (精准的) enough? As far as I could figure, we just turned on the GPS program, searched the address and drove. Was it the north Alps or south? Who knew? Is GPS equipment just making us all stupider or is it acting as a useful aid to people who might not
be brave enough to go outside of their gates without it? In my case, it's probably both.
Maybe one day I'll grow new brain cells where my sense of direction should be. And maybe one day I'll figure out the French roads. But in the meantime, you'll find me in a roundabout, trying to figure out where to exit.

C
Long ago, sailors sailed to faraway places without the ability to rely on modern instruments to lead the way. Still, many were able to sail across vast, uncharted oceans and arrive at their destinations safely. Why didn't more sailors get lost at sea? What kinds of equipment did they use to find their way?
In early sailing history, few maps were available. Sailors had
to rely on memory and on written guides called pilot books. Pilot
books offered sailors information about how long it took to get to
certain ports and instructions about getting in and out of the
ports. Pilot books did not offer much information about sailing far from land.
Later, sailors used maps, charts, and information from other explorers to plan their trips. Early maps and charts offered descriptions of islands and coastlines that helped sailors navigate. Experienced sailors learned where harbors, fresh water, supplies, and friendly people might be found. They were also able to warn others about dangers.
Some of the early navigation practices and equipment used on these ships proved to be quite trustworthy. Early sailors used a tool called the astrolabe (星盘) to figure out the positions of stars and the sun to determine their location. For centuries, sailors planned their routes, sailed, and recorded their progress using the North Star as their only reference. They also used patterns of wind and waves as directional clues. Even though ocean waves may look the same to inexperienced eyes, they have different shapes related to the depth of the ocean and their closeness to land. Sailors even found a way that clouds and seabirds could help them.
The sailors of yesterday relied heavily on their observations and studies of the sea. Although their techniques were simple, they were able to achieve great things during their adventures at sea.
