六、阅读理解
文章大意:这是一篇说明文。
本文主要介绍了一个新的项目,通过智能手机应用程序上的早期警报系统,监视森林、检查森林并记录破坏情况,用这种方法减缓对亚马逊雨林的破坏。
13. Efforts to preserve the Amazon rain forest are growing ever more urgent as the ecosystem’s destruction accelerates. A recent study shows
that a new program combining on-the-ground monitoring with satellite data and smartphone technology could help put the brakes on Amazon deforestation (毁林)—and potentially that of forests elsewhere.
The scientists cooperated with 76 local communities, 36 of which participated in using satellite-based “early deforestation alerts”, an early-alert system on a smartphone app, to watch over the forest and to inspect forests and document damage. Over the next two years the participants were paid to work as forest monitors and received monthly alerts via the app when satellite data indicated local forest losses. Monitors investigated alerts and inspected for deforestation in the areas. They reported confirmed losses back to their communities, which decided whether to deal with the affairs on their own or inform state authorities.
The researchers analyzed the same forest-loss satellite data from the given time period in all 76 communities. They found the program reduced forest loss by 8.4 hectares (公顷) in the first year—a 52 percent reduction compared with the average loss in the control communities, says Tara Slough, an economist at New Y ork University. “This reduction in deforestation was concentrated in communities facing the largest threat of forest loss”, she adds.
Results for the program were less striking in its second year, when forest loss was reduced by only 3.3 hectares compared with that in control communities. The researchers explain that a Peruvian government campaign against coca planting that year may have discouraged deforestation in both experimental and control communities, narrowing differences between the two groups in the program.
Experts say this approach to dealing with Amazonian deforestation looks promising. Local groups may continue the work they started in the program. “We want to apply this in other communities. In doing so, we are making a contribution to the world,” wrote Francisco, a community member involved in the research.
1. What can we learn about the new program?
A.It applies to all the forests.B.It adopts multiple technologies.
C.It involves no human participation.D.It solves the problem beforehand.
2. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A.By analyzing the data.B.By surveying the monitors.
C.By observing the area.D.By investigating the damage.
3. What do the researchers think of the effect of the program?
A.Stable.B.Positive.C.Unconvincing.D.Discouraging.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Amazon Protecting the Rainforest B.Experts Testing Early-alert System
C.Communities Dealing With Deforestation D.Smartphone Watching Over the Forest

文章介绍了意大利南部一座活火山——维苏威火山。
14. EVERY few hundred years, a sleeping giant in southern Italy awakens with a bang, spewing volcanic ash across the countryside. The volcano, called Mount V esuvius, formed 25, 000 years ago. During its most explosive eruptions, the volcano could blanket nearby cities with hot ash, sometimes also burying them with deadly flows of mud and rocks. One famous eruption occurred nearly 2, 000 years ago, in the year AD 79. It lasted 18 hours and destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, killing thousands of people as they tried to escape.
Scientists and city officials had supposed that Naples, one of Italy’s most populous cities, was far enough away that it would be safe from the volcano’s wrath. New evidence suggests that this might not be the case.
Researchers recently discovered 4000-year-old layers of ash and mud under present-day Naples. Just outside the city, they also uncovered abandoned villages, as well as human and animal skeletons. Most surprising of all, the researchers say, was the discovery of thousands of footprints from the same time period, pressed into layers of wet ash that had rained from the sky. The footprints show that thousands of people were fleeing to the northwest, away from the volcano, as it erupted.
Mount V esuvius hasn’t had a major eruption since 1631, but it’s still very active. The discovery of the ancient ash layers, skeletons, and footprints is a warning that modern Naples, a city of 3 million people, isn’t safe from the volcano, scientists say. So, when the volcano begins to rumble again, Naples should have an emergency evacuation plan ready - just in case.
1. Which of the following is true with Mount Vesuvius?
A.It formed 2 ,500 years ago.
B.Its latest eruption occurred 2, 000 years ago.
C.It is an active, destructive volcano.
D.It is where the city Naples is located.
2. What does the word underlined possibly mean?
A.Path.B.Heat.C.Fear .D.Eruption.
3. The researchers found the new evidence EXCEPT _________.
A.ancient layers of ash and mud
B.animal footprints
C.abandoned villages
D.human skeletons
4. What can we conclude from the passage?
A.City Pompeii has been rebuilt now.
B.City Naples isn’t suitable for living.
C.Mount Vesuvius will not erupt in a hundred years.
D.Mount Vesuvius is a potential danger to Naples.

文章讲述了,去一家小博物馆的经历让设计师兼排版师Marcin Wichary对键盘产生了兴趣,之后他开始制作一本关于键盘历史的全面书籍。
16. When the designer and typographer (排印工) Marcin Wichary chanced upon a tiny museum just outside Barcelona five years ago, the
experience tipped his interest in the history of technology into an obsession (痴迷) with a very particular part of it: the keyboard.
“I have never seen so many typewriters under one roof. Not even close,” he shared on the Internet at the time. “At this point, I literally have tears in my eyes. I’m not kidding. This feels like a miracle.”
He’d had a discovery while wandering through the exhibit: Each key on a keyboard has its own stories. And these stories are not just about computing technology, but also about the people who designed, used, or otherwise interacted with the keyboards.
Take the backspace key for example, he explains, “I like that the concept of backspace was originally just that — a space going backward. We are used to it erasing now, but for a hundred years, erasing was its own incredibly complex effort. Y ou needed to master a Comet eraser, or Wite-Out, or strange correction tapes, and possibly all of the above… or give up and start from scratch whenever you made a small mistake in typing.”
The deeper he researched, the more obsessive he became. Amazed that no comprehensive books existed on the history of keyboards, he decided to create his own. When not working at his day job as the design leader for the design software company Figma, he began producing Shift Happens, a two-volume, 1,216-page hardcover book — and raised over $750,000 for the project on Kickstarter in March of 2023. Wichary was only a bit surprised by the support and the keyboard’s wide appeal. As he points out. “It’s such a crucial device that occupies a lot of our waking life.”
1. After the museum experience, Wichary’s interest in technology ________.
A.took off B.died out C.grew stronger D.became more concrete
2. What did Wichary discover while admiring the keyboards?
A.The stories behind them.B.The wisdom of human.
C.The secret of the keyboards.D.The history of technology.
3. What does Wichary want to tell us about the backspace key in Paragraph 4?
A.It is a simple but powerful key.
B.It can be used to move back one space.
C.It is the result of long-term improvement.
D.It allows people to make mistakes when typing.
4. Why did Wichary write his own book?
A.To fill a gap.B.To get famous.C.To make money.D.To record history.
