Adopt-a-Highway
Hello. I’m Jan from Mrs. Lake’s class. My class wants to work together to help the public. We think we have found a great w ay to do this. Last month we did a class project on the highwa ys near our town. We learned about the Adopt-a-
Highway Program. This program brings people together to pic k up litter along the roads. We think it would be a great idea fo r all students in our school to join the program and adopt a hig hway.
Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highwa y is adopted, only part of the highway is cared for by a group of people. The group agrees to work every week to keep its p art of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that ha s the name of the group printed on it. The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping th at area of the road clean.
The Adopt-a-
Highway Program is a great way for people to help their envir onment look nicer. Also, the government does not have to sen
d out as many road workers. This saves money. Finally, peopl
e may try harder to keep roads clean i
f they see people, espe cially teenagers like us, cleanin
g them up.
We will need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our roads clean, please come wit h your parents to the meeting next week. We will meet in Mrs. Lake’s room on Wednesday at 6:00 P.M. At the meeting, we will talk about which roads are the dirtiest as a result of peopl e’s unkind acts. Then w e’ll try to pick an area to adopt and cle an up.
I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Remember to kee p our roads clean!
27. What is the Adopt-a-Highway Program about?
A. Giving names to the highways.
B. Drawing pictures of highways.
C. Picking up litter along the roads.
D. Putting up signs near the roads.
28. The Adopt-a-Highway Program can help ________.
A. provide jobs
B. build highways
C. control traffic
D. save money
29. What should the students do first if they want to join the pr ogram?
A. Go to a meeting next Wednesday.
B. Call Mrs. Lake next week.
C. Write a letter to their parents.
D. Pick a spot to care for.
30.What is the purpose of this speech?
A. To introduce the traffic system.

I am glad to have received your letter, and I happen to kno w something about your problem. To my surprise, you said yo u would give up learning English because you haven’t done w ell in it recently. You were not interested in it any longer and w ere going to give up.
I know it is not easy to learn English, but you should not los e heart. You see, English is widely used in the world today an d it will be an important tool in our future work. Besides, Engli sh has become more and more important in our daily life. Wh ere there is a will, there is a way. Can’t you remember that? If you study hard, I’m sure you will succeed in the end.
I think listening, speaking, reading and writing are the essenti al parts in learning English. As for practicing listening, we can
watch English films and listening to English songs. In our daily study, we can communicate with our English teachers, class mates and the foreigners. In order to strengthen our reading a bilities, we can read newspapers, magazines and even the En glish novels. Once we read a lot and accumulate more, we wil l write good articles. We should always keep in mind that prac tice makes perfect. In addition, you can consult with your teac hers and classmates about the ways of learning English well. During this process, you will gradually find you are fond of En glish. I’m looking forwards to hearing good news from you.

The Boy Made It!
One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in . In the early afterno on, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to se e far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He d idn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the surviva l shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed pu t. The first thing he did was to find shelter form the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his b ody temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.
Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby str eam so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could l ast, Nicholas did the only thing he could- he huddled(蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tu esday, Nicholas went out to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer sear cher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watch ed Grylls’ survival show. Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life, In each episode(一期节
目)of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.

Adopt-a-Highway
Hello. I’m Jan from Mrs. Lake’s class. My class wants to work together to help the public. We think we have found a great way to do this. Last month we did a class project on the highwa ys near our town. We learned about the Adopt-a-
Highway Program. This program brings people together to pick up litter along the roads. We t hink it would be a great idea for all students in our school to join the program and adopt a hig hway.
Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highway is adopted, only part of the hi ghway is cared for by a group of people. The group agrees to work every week to keep its pa rt of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that has the name of the group printed on it. The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping tha t area of the road clean.
The Adopt-a-
Highway Program is a great way for people to help their environment look nicer. Also, the go vernment does not have to send out as many road workers. This saves money. Finally, peopl e may try harder to keep roads clean if they see people, especially teenagers like us, cleanin g them up.
We will need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our。
