Group project--answer the following questions : If you work for Chippy, how would you argue that the new product should have lower classificaiton ? From carrier’s standpoint, how has cost of service changed? One of Chippy’s own trucks, used for local delivery, has an enclosed body measuring (inside) 7 feet by 8 feet by 20 feet, and limited by law to carrying a load of no more than 8,000 pounds. Because the truck is not supposed to overloaded, what combination, expressed in terms of cartons of both new and old style chips can it be legally carry?

Chippy’s management believed that since the new chips are different, the LTL classification of 200 was too high. Management decide to ask the motor carrier classification bureau for a new , lower classification
intermodal (Multimodal) transportation
Introduction to intermodal (multimodal) transportation Multimodal Transport Operator (MTO)多式 联运经营人 Forms of multimodal transport operations

Fluctuating demand and speed-to-market requirements often challenge vendors to find economies of scale by consolidating freight. Pooling shipments together therefore can help mediate these volatilities波动率 .
Why remix?

Walmart demand more frequent deliveries, with more SKUs and fewer quantities each time, therefore push up vendor’s transportation cost Converting less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments to full truckloads (TL) helps companies optimize and reduce transportation costs, rationalize asset utilization, and provide better service to end customers.
How?
In walmart’s case, The company offers its online Retail Link software for vendors to enter and review purchase orders, make carrier appointments and get data on consolidated loads. Consolidating freight by finding a shared network that meets their transportation requirements.

The overload issue The low capacity utilization
Case: remix system of Wal-Mart

Remix is Wal-Mart’s name for a vendor transportation consolidation program Wal-Mart plans to transform its distribution system of 120 company warehouses fed by thousands of vendors moving 2 billion cases of food and 2.7 billion packages of other merchandise to 3,700 U.S. stores annually. The Bentonville, Ark.-based chain is forging a twotrack inbound logistics system that will separate highturnover goods from slower-selling products to reduce stock-outs, especially in its fast-growing grocery stores. To do that, Wal-Mart is leaning on its vendors to work with transportation and logistics providers to consolidate less-than-truckload (LTL) deliveries into truckload(TL) freight before it reaches a store. If successful, the system will change the way vendors and supply chain partners move goods to Wal-Mart

Problems of remix
Only like shipment can be consolidated consolidating shipments sometimes means holding product until inventory builds up. For consignees with ultra-tight delivery windows, such infrequency would be intolerable. Concerns about predictability and cycle time consistency also arise.
Chapter 5 International Land and Multimodal transportation
Truck Transportation
Issues about international truck transport :
Regulations and rules of different countries Enviornmental problems Truck capacity utilization
Located in Reno, Nevada, since 1947, the Chippy potato chip company manufactured potato chips and distribute them within a 100-mile radius of Reno. It use its own trucks for delivery in the Reno, Carson City, and Lake Tahoe area and common carrier trucking for all other outgoing shipments. All of its motor carrier shipment were on LTL basis. The applicable motor carrier freight rating, or classification, for LTL potato chip was 200. This classification was high, although potato chips are often given as textbook examples of bulky freight that will cause a truck to cube out. Even after much of the motor carrier industry was deregulated, Chippy had difficulty finding contract truckers interested in negotiating specific contract rates. This was because potato chips--as a result of their bulk—were not desirable cargo from the trucker’s point of view.

The potato chips were packed in bags containing 8 ounces of chips. Twenty-four 8ounce bags were packed in cartons that were 12 inches by 12 inches by 36 inches. The packed carton weighted 14 pounds. The 8 ounce bags of chips wholesaled FOB for 40 cents each and retail at 59 cents. Recently the Chippy firm acquired rights to produce a new type of chip, made from powdered potatos yielding chips of identical shape that could be packed in tubular管形的 container. A 5-ounce paper tube of chip would wholesaled FOB at 40 cents and retail at 59 cents. The new chip were much less bulky. Twenty-four 5-ounce containers could be packed in a carton measuring 1 cubic foot. The filled carton weight 10 pounds (the carrier is paid on the basis of carton weight)
