第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,共40分)
A
Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self- respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized (分类)as "honor" help you create this life of good feelings.
Here's an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.
Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk's mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.
Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?
In the first case, where we don't tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk's attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.
There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it's easy to think and act honorably again when we're happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it's started, it's easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.
56. According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our_______
A. self-respect
B. financial rewards
C. advertising ability
D. friendly relationship
57. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to_______.
A. lying
B. stealing
C. cheating
D. advertising
58. The phrase "bringing the error to the clerk's attention" (in para. 5)means_______.
A. telling the truth to the clerk
B. offering advice to the clerk
C. asking the clerk to be more attentive
D. reminding the clerk of the charged item
59. How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?
A. We'll be very excited.
B. We'll feel unfortunate.
C. We'll have a sense of honor.
D. We'll feel sorry for the clerk.
60. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A. How to Live Truthfully
B. Importance of Peacefulness
C. Ways of Gaining Self-respect
D. Happiness through Honorable Actions

The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place
Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet… We are surrounded by the word “diet” everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically(身体上).
Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale(秤)instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food labels.
On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don’t have to work to get
results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.
The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.
Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.
61. From Paragraph 1, we learn that ________.
A. diet products fail to bring out people’s potential
B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products
C. diet products are misleading people
D. people are fed up with diet products
62. One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to _____.
A. try out a variety of diet foods
B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods
C. pay attention to their own eating habits
D. watch their weight rather than their diet
63. In Paragraph 3, “gain comes without pain” probably means ______.
A. losing weight is effortless
B. it costs a lot to lose weight
C. diet products bring no pain
D. diet products are free from calories
64. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products ______.
A. are over-consumed
B. lack basic nutrients
C. are short of chemicals
D. provide too much energy
65. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

I’ll never forget Easter1946. I was fourteen, my little sister, Ocy, was twelve and my older sister, Darlene, was sixteen. We lived at home with our mother, and the four of us knew what it was to do without. My dad died five years before, leaving Mom with no money and seven school-aged kids to raise.
By 1946, my older sisters were married and my brothers had left home. A month before Easter, the vicar(牧师)of our church announced that a special holiday offering would be taken to help a poor family. He asked everyone to save and give sacrificially(牺牲地).
When we got home, we talked about what we could do. We decided to buy fifty pounds of potatoes and live on them for a month. This would allow us to save twenty dollars of our grocery money for the offering. Then we thought that if we kept out electric lights turned out as much as possible and didn’t listen to the radio, we’d save money on that month’s electric bill.
The night before Easter, we were so excited that we could hardly sleep. We didn’t care that we wouldn’t have new clothes for Easter; we had seventy dollars for the sacrificial offering. We could hardly wait to get to church!
Then we sat in church proudly. When the sacrificial offering was taken, we were sitting in the second row from the front. Mom put in the ten-dollar bill, and each of us kids put in a twenty-dollar bill.
We sang all the way home from church. Late that afternoon, the minister drove up in his car. Mom went to the door, talked with him for a moment, and then came back with an envelope in her hand. We asked what it was, but she didn’t say a word. She opened the envelop and out fell a bunch of money. There were three crisp twenty-dollar bills, one ten-dollar bill and seventeen one-dollar bills.

Targeting teens
But using the Web also makes teens a target. Posting too much personal information for those millions of cyber eyes to see can cause some big problems and can even invite a thread to your life.
As Mary learned, not everyone on the Internet is who he or she says they are. Adults will sometimes pose as other teens, posting fake photos and nice messages to gain trust. They use their fake identity to access the personal information of others, such as home address, phone number, or school name.
“That’s not the most common scenario”. Says Da vid Finkehor, a sociology professor at the University of
New Hampshire. “Only 3 percent of teens aged 10 to 18 who use the Internet report being asked to meet offline. But the danger is real.”
Safety measures
Mary’s Myspace profile is set to “private”, whi ch means that only the people she adds under the “friend” category can access her page. She also doesn’t have any pictures of herself on her site. The only self-identifying material she has posted is her name, grade, and a list of hobbies.
“People can only add me if they know my last name or my e-mail,” Mary says. “I don’t want random people to see my profile; I just go online to talk to my friends.”
Stay safe and have fun online
Experts say almost 90 percent of U.S teens are online. But not everyone knows how to surf the
Web in a smart way. With these tips, you cam have fun, stay safe, and avoid embarrassment!

D. wish

第一节: 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can’t be avoided. The US Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.
● Try physical activity.
When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity. Running, walking, playing tennis, or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try. Physical exercise will relieve your anxiety and worry and help you to relax. Your body and your mind will work together to ease the stress in your life.
● Share your stress.
It helps to talk to someone about your anxieties and worries. Perhaps a friend, family member, teacher or even your leader can help you a better view of what’s troubling you. If you feel your problem is serious, you might seek professional help from a psychologist or a doctor. Knowing when to ask for help is an important step in an important step in avoiding serious problems later.
● Take care of yourself.
You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and cannot sleep well enough, or if you’re not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.
● Make time for yourself.
Schedule time for both work and entertainment. Don’t forget, play can be just as important to you as work.. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go
window-shopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.
●Make a list of things to do.
Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling tht “there’s so much to do, and not enough time”. Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do , then ___________, checking off each task as it is completed. Set out to do the most important tasks first.

My opinion on Cheating in Examinations
At present, a number of middle school students have picked up a bad habit—cheating in examination.
There are three main reasons. First, schools have given students too many examinations, some of which are too difficult. Second, some students are not diligent and they don’t work hard at their lessons. More time is wasted playing games on surfing the Internet. Therefore, they haven’t enough time to prepare for the exams. Third, students have to do so to satisfy their parents and teachers.
In my opinion, cheating in exams should be forbidden because it not only goes against the school rules but also does great harm to students. “No pains, no gains.” We students are supposed to be honest and hardworking, only in this way, can we improve our study and make progress. Besides, our teachers should offer fewer examinations and severely punish those who cheat in the examination.。
