21.(6分)GOING TO UNIVERSITY is supposed to be a mind-broadening experience. That statement is probably made in comparison to training for work straight after school, which might not be so encouraging. But is it actually true? Jessika Golle of the University of Tübingen, in Germany, thought she would try to find out. Her result, however, is not quite what might be expected. As she reports in Psychological Science this week, she found that those who have been to university do indeed seem to leave with broader and more inquiring minds than those who have spent their immediate post-school years in vocational (职业的) training for work. However, it was not the case that university broadened minds. Rather, work seemed to narrow them.
Dr. Golle came to this conclusion after she and a team of colleagues studied the early careers of 2,095 German youngsters. The team used two standardized tests to assess their volunteers. One was of personality traits, including openness, conscientiousness(认真)and so on. The other was of attitudes, such as realistic, investigative and enterprising. They administered both tests twice—once towards the end of each volunteer’s time at school, and then again six years later. Of the original group, 382 were on the intermediate track, from which there was a choice between the academic and vocational routes, and it was on these that the researchers focused. University beckoned for 212 of them. The remaining 170 chose vocational training and a job.
When it came to the second round of tests, Dr. Golle found that the personalities of those who had gone to university had not changed significantly. Those who had undergone vocational training and then got jobs were not that much changed in personality, either—except in one crucial respect. They had become more conscientious.
That sounds like a good thing, certainly compared with the common public image of undergraduates as a bunch of lazybones. But changes in attitude that the researchers recorded were rather worrying. In the university group, again, none were detectable. But those who had chosen the vocational route showed marked drops in interest in tasks that are investigative and enterprising in nature. And that might restrict their choice of careers.
Some investigative and enterprising jobs, such as scientific research, are, indeed beyond the degreeless. But many, particularly in Germany, with its tradition of vocational training, are not. The researchers mention, for example, computer programmers and finance-sector workers as careers requiring these traits. If Dr. Golle is correct, and changes in attitude brought about by the very training Germany prides itself on are narrowing people’s choices, that is indeed a matter worthy of serious consideration.
1、Which of the following can best replace “beckoned for” in Paragraph 2?
A.Examined. B.Attracted.
C.Organized. D.Recognized.
2、What can we learn from the research?
A.The degreeless have not changed in personalities.
B.Going to university is a mind-broadening experience.
C.Working straight after school narrows pe ople’s minds.
D.College students pride themselves on their education.
3、According to the last two paragraphs, .
A.college students enjoy a very good public image
B.the undergraduates have changed significantly in attitude
C.the degreeless are much better at dealing with challenging tasks

4、What is the author’s attitude towards the finding?

22.(8分)Ten years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people were always in the right place at the right time, while others consistently experienced ill fortune. I placed advertisements in national newspapers asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky. Hundreds of extraordinary men and women volunteered for
my research. Over the years I have interviewed them, monitored their lives and had them take part in various experiments.
In one of the experiments, I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, asking them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper, saying, “Tell the experimenter you have seen this and you will win $50.” This message took up half of the pa ge and was written in type that was more than two inches high. It was staring everyone in the face, but the unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it.
Unlucky people are generally more nervous than lucky people, and this anxiety affects their ability to notice the unexpected. As a result, they miss opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else. They go to gatherings concentrating on finding their perfect partners and miss opportunities to make good friends. They look through newspapers determined to find certain types of job advertisements and miss other types of jobs.
Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for. My research eventually showed that lucky people are skilled at noticing opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition (直觉), are open to new experiences, and adopt a never-say-die attitude that transforms bad luck into good luck.
1、What’s the purpose of the author’s research?
A.To discover what luck means to people.
B.To find lucky people and unlucky people.
C.To distinguish between good luck and bad luck.
D.To figure out why people are always lucky or unlucky.
2、Why did the unlucky people miss the message in the experiment?
A.There was too much information to be read in detail.
B.They were too focused on looking for photographs.
C.It took too much time to go through newspapers.
D.The words were too small to be noticed.
3、What leads to lucky people’s good fortune?
A.Their ability to spot opportunities. B.Their ability to become relaxed.
C.Their ability to communicate. D.Their ability to make friends.
4、What’s the key message of the last paragraph?
A.What lucky people are looking for.
B.How lucky people generate good luck.
C.What lucky people can do with opportunities.
D.How lucky people transform bad luck into good luck.
23.(8分) A gaming company in New Zealand is luring employees. from around the world by offering unlimited paid annual leave, a share in t he company’s profits and no set work hours.
Dean Hall became famous in international gaming circles for being the lead designer on popular video game DayZ. After searching the world for a location for his new gaming studio, Rocketwerkz, New Zealander Hall settled on the small university town of Dunedin on the south island’s east coast, where land is cheap and creative start-ups have become an important pan of the city’s identity.
Rocketwerkz’s flexible work culture is now drawing talent from around the glob e, with Hall receiving 300 messages of inquiry since a local newspaper wrote about his studio last week.
Last year, when the company was still in its infancy(婴儿期), baby cats would also make a regular appearance in the office as a form of fighting stress, and Friday afternoons are generally reserved for sports and games to end the week on a playful note.
“The first time I heard about the idea of unlimited paid leave in places like Silicon Valley it was about the problems it caused. A culture had appeared whe re employees took no leave,” said Hall.
“So to address that, our staff are issued the standard New Zealand annual leave of four weeks, but they can also
take unlimited leave in addition to that.”
Emily Lampitt, from Britain, is a 3D junior artist who has been with the company for a year and a half. She says the flexible work culture was a huge factor in her decision to move to New Zealand.
“The flexibility here has made me feel much more relaxed” she says. I “That internal stress I used to feel in a traditional work environment has gone, so when I am at work now it is because I want to be, because I am passionate(有激情的), not because I am afraid of my boss or watching the clock.”

24.(8分)A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment? As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in a garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower.
A biodegradable (生物所能分解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage consumers to recycle.
Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and is able to change shape. Over time it can also break down into the soil without giving out any poisonous
chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms fertilizers. These feed the seed and help the flower grow.
Engineers have designed a small transparent (透明的) window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is throw n away. “We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the covers so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time.” said one scientist.
As phone technology is developing so quickly, people are constantly throwing their mobiles away. This means manufacturers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be throw n away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief for nature, according to the scientists.
“The seed comes out and the flower grows in the pot so you don’t ha ve to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it,” said Kerry Kirw an. She leads the research team, which is based at the University of Warw ick in Britain.
1、What is the purpose of this passage?
A.To tell the popularity of biodegradable cell phones.
B.To discuss the development of the cell phone technology.
C.To persuade the readers to buy the biodegradable cell phone.
D.To introduce an environmental-friendly cell phone to readers.
2、Which of the following is TRUE about the cover of the new type of phone?
A.It can turn into useful fertilizer for the sunflower seeds.
B.It can hardly serve as the storage for the sunflower seed.
C.It may give out poisonous chemicals when breaking down.
D.It may make the seed grow after the phone is throw n away.
3、What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The new type of mobile phone will sell extremely well.
B.The new type of mobile phone is already on the market.
C.Other flowers may be used in the new type of cell phone.
D.Mobile phone is increasingly important to the environment.

25.(10分)There are only a few truly pleasant smells to wake up to in the morning. For me, it's the smell of
freshly brewed coffee. Just a sniff of it makes me jump out of bed and rush to the kitchen for a gulp of the hot black liquid.
If you're a big fan of coffee, you'll understand that opening a new packet of coffee releases an amazing smell-fresh, roasted coffee beans. And you'll be able to identify the beans' origin—Colombia, Vietnam or Brazil. Tim Hayward is a food writer and coffee shop owner; he believes the smell "is absolutely vital. When you walk into the coffee shop in the morning and that smell hits you, you're getting physiological(生理上的) responses."
I know from experience when I walk into a cafe, my mouth begins to water and it's the smell that makes me feel good. However, this feeling sometimes turns to disappointment. This is particularly the case when I order a coffee to go in a tall paper cup and sip the liquid through a hole in the lid. Yes, it's convenient, but is it really the right way to appreciate it?
You walk into the coffee shop, you get the smell, but when you actually take the drink out, you are drinking it from something that is designed to deliver the hot liquid directly past your tongue, but prevent any smell coming up to your nose. As well as eliminating the smell, takeaway coffee cups create a lot of waste and a vast majority of them still don't get recycled. So maybe now is the time to really wake up and smell the coffee by drinking from a cup in a cafe, chatting with friends and saving the planet!
1、In which aspect does the author agree with Tim Hayward?
A.People drink coffee first thing in the morning.
B.Coffee beans' origin makes all the differences.
C.Some people are addicted to drinking coffee
D.It's the smell of coffee that really matters.
2、What does the author complain about?
A.The process of making coffee.
B.The high temperature of coffee
C.The design of the paper coffee cup.
D.The inconvenience of buying coffee.
3、What can replace the word "eliminating" underlined in Paragraph 4?
A.Creating. B.Removing. C.Increasing. D.Changing.
4、What can be the best title of the text?
A.Wake up and smell the coffee
B.Try to be a real lover of coffee
C.Drink coffee to save the planet
D.Choose takeaway coffee for convenience

29、Dear Chris,
I’m Lihua, a student from Class one, Grade three. I am very glad to hear that you will give us a lec ture on the western art in the cultural week that will be held next week, and I do hope the lecture is about western drama, as I am very interested in western literature and art, and drama is the perfect combination of the two. As is known to all, a lot of famous literary classics are represented in a drama, such as the giant Shakespeare's "Hamlet", "Othello", "King Lear" and "Macbeth", all of which are excellent drama works. Although I have some knowledge of drama, I still want to have a deep understanding of it. In view of this reason, I hope you can give me a detailed explanation of the history of drama, including its origin, development and evolution.
I am looking forward to your excellent lecture
yours truly,
Lihua。
