四、阅读理解
As for long-distance holidays, there are some unique destinations that actually offer you great value for your money, even if you’re on a budget.
Tokyo, Japan
Food lovers should head to this busy city which has the lowest cost for dining out —you could even bag a three-course evening meal for two, with a bottle of house wine, for just under £ 34. For sightseeing there are plenty of free museums and attractions, while tour bus ticket prices start from as little as £ 11.56.
Bangkok, Thailand
Thailand's capital is second to none as the best value long-distance city. Although there isn’t a huge di fference across all prices compared to the other cities, it is accommodation that really makes it stand out. I you’re only stopping for a long weekend, then make sure to check out the awe-inspiring The Grand Palace, a complex of breathtaking temples.
Beijing, China
The Chinese capital took third spot with a total basket price of £ 337.49. If you only do one cultural day out during your stay, make it a trip to The Forbidden City. There are some seriously beautiful and delicate buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, not to mention they're home to priceless artificial objects from China's historical milestones.
Dubai, UAE
Although Dubai does have a reputation for being quite the splurge (挥霍金钱) when it comes to holidays and if you’re going to addict yoursel f to a spot of shopping or hit the roller-coasters, it actually provides quite good value for what you pay. The city also
offers some cheaper prices across its museums, galleries and attractions as well as airport transfers.
21. What can you enjoy in Tokyo, Japan?
A.Eating out cheap. B.Free bus ride.
C.Visiting galleries free. D.Priceless man-made objects.
22. Which one tops the first as the best value long-distance city?
A.Tokyo. B.Bangkok. C.Beijing. D.Dubai.
23. What is people’s common idea about Dubai?

C.Being on vacation in Dubai costs tons of money.
D.The roller-coasters there are the best in the world.
At 12, my father decided to take me on a trip to France. I had never been out of the country before, so I was very excited. My aunt, my father and I went around with my father showing us all the unbelievable sites in Paris. None of us spoke much French but we loved the city.
We had taken the subway all over the city and were congratulating ourselves on our mastering what is honestly an excellent subway design that is pretty easy to follow. We decided to visit Versailles by train. We chatted happily along the way until my father realized we were far into the French countryside and no one around spoke English.
We reached the end of the line and felt afraid when everyone finally left the train. An old man and his grandchild noticed us and came to help. He spoke no English, so in broken French we tried to explain. When he finally understood, this great man settled his grandson and showed us to the correct train and then boarded with us.
Later we knew the truth that there was a train transfer (转乘) and he didn’t want us to miss it. This kind man rode a train for an hour and a half out of his way to make sure that three Americans got where they wanted to be. He refused to let us pay for his ticket. He did it all with a gentle smile and patted our hands gently at the stop. Then in his quiet way, he boarded the train to return the way he had come.
What impressed me most was the man and his kindness during the amazing trip. Some Americans think the French are rude for some reason, but I always try to persuade them to change their minds with this very story.
24. What happened to the author and his family on the train?
A.They couldn’t understand the signs of the train.
B.They failed to get off the train at the right time.
C.They had different opinions about where to go first.
D.They found it hard to communicate with the French.
25. How did the man help the author and his family?
A.He paid for their train tickets. B.He showed them the returning way. C.He invited them to travel together. D.He led them to their place.
26. Which of the following can best describe the last paragraph?
A.Seeing is believing. B.Being kind is a good manner. C.Travelling enriches one’s life.D.Helping others brings great pleasure.
27. What’s the purpose of the author’s writing the text?
A.To explain an unexpected problem.
B.To list the unbelievable sites in Paris.
C.To share an unforgettable foreign experience.
D.To show the importance of mastering a foreign language.
After an earthquake most survivors can be expected to recover over time, particularly with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, while others will have to contend with the destruction of their homes, medical problems, and injury to family members. Children especially will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their school.
Children often turn to adults for information, comfort and help. Parents should try to remain calm, answer children’s questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children’s behavior.
Children react differently to an earthquake depending on their ages, developmental levels and former experiences. Some will respond by withdrawing (不与人交往), while others will have angry outbursts (爆发). Parents should remain sensitive to each child’s reactions. Parents should spend time talking to their children, letting them know that it’s OK to ask questions and to share their worries. Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family mealtimes or bedtimes for them. They should answer questions briefly and honestly and be sure to ask their children for their opinions and ideas. Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when you answer the questions again. For young children, parents, after talking about the earthquake, might read a favorite story or have a relaxing family activity to help them calm down. Parents should also tell children they are safe and spend extra time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.
28. The underlined phrase “contend with” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by “________”. A.deal with B.make up C.put off D.turn back
29. When children ask the same question again, parents should ________.
A.read a favorite story to comfort them
B.ask them to help do some housework
C.be patient and answer the question again
D.take them out to play games
30. Which of the following pieces of advice is NOT mentioned in the passage? A.Keep a close watch on children’s behavior.
B.Tell the children they are safe.
C.Tell the children you love them.
D.Ask educational experts for help.
31. What can we know from the passage?
A.All people will recover from an earthquake quickly.
B.Children may need a longer time to recover after an earthquake.
C.Children should turn to their classmates for help after an earthquake.
D.Children react in the same way as adults do to an earthquake.
The number of people in my house has grown from six to seven recently. A young man from Spain has come to spend six weeks with us. He is not an ordinary young man; he’s actually my second cousin, and is here to spend time with this side of the family, and of course, to learn English.
Thankfully, he is the same age as my youngest son, and is very fun-loving. I’m sure that he will pick up a lot of English while he plays with my kids. That was actually how I picked up a lot of Spanish when I was a child. My mother would take me to Mallorca in Spain, to spend about a month in the summers. Because children play so much, and are less inhibited(拘束的) than adults, they absorb language like little sponges (海绵). Well, that’s what happened to me, and I’m very thankful for the experience.
So far, we have taken my cousin to Seattle for a couple of days, and down to a local river to look for gold. Today, I plan on taking him to the museum in the town of Cashmere which is excellent. He will get his first view of Native American life, and be able to walk through some of the original pioneer houses of this area. Like most boys who are thirteen, he is very curious and constantly asks questions. Of course, I don’t always have the answers! Coming to the U.S. is a big step for him, especially being so young. Mind you, he is a world traveller. His mother is an air hostess and is able to get cheap airline tickets, so they travel internationally all the time. So he is extremely comfortable in airports, and understands the routines of getting from one place to another.
I hope that his being here will encourage my children to spend time in Spain, and also become international travellers.
32. Why does the young man come to America?
A.To spend the summer holiday. B.To meet his mother.
C.To learn English. D.To go to school.
33. How old is the writer’s youngest son?
A.11 years old. B.13 years old. C.15 years old. D.16 years old. 34. What does the writer think of her Spanish experience?
A.Helpful. B.Boring. C.Unnecessary. D.Unimportant.
35. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.The young man’s mother is a pilot.
B.The young man often travels by plane.
C.The writer’s children enjoy travelling to Spain.
D.The young man has ever seen Native American life before.
五、七选五
As Labor Day gets close, many Americans are trying to find some final vacation time before kids head back to school. 36 With people still looking for that escape, it’s important to know some tips to make your dollars go the extra mile when traveling. Choose places that are in their off-season during kids’ school breaks. Over the Christmas/New Year’s break, for example, the prices for flights and hotels in the Caribbean and Hawaii are sky-high. 37 You can go to places that are in their low season but are warm and festive(欢乐的).
For US trips, think about extended-stay hotels(常住酒店). Extended-stay hotels give you affordable suites(套房) with a lot of free facilities for the money. You get a door to the kids’ room that you can close at bedtime. 38 A refrigerator, microwave and washing machines, as well as free breakfast, Wi-Fi and sometimes even dinner and snacks are available, too.
For European city trips, rent an apartment. Hotel rooms in European cities can be expensive and tiny. They have no refrigerator or microwave, and neighbors can hear every sound. 39 It also gives you more space and thicker(更厚的) walls. The kitchen can help you save some money in hotel breakfast charges, and the washing machine can help you save the time for washing.
40 Hunting for specific items —maybe they’re seashells from each beach you stop at, maps from tourist information offices or door handle do-not-disturb-signs from hotels — gives kids a task and keeps them busy in a trip. Collecting souvenirs on a certain theme is a lot cheaper than buying them.
A.Look for things with your kids.
B.An apartment usually costs less.
C.So you can consider other places.
D.Collect things instead of buying things.
E.You also have more space to move around.
F.You can also choose extended-stay hotels if you like.
G.However, a getaway any time of the year can be pricey.

Alan and the other campers sat around the fire, talking and laughing. It would be Alan’s first night in a tent, and he was excited, if a little nervous.
Then, the conservation area officer spoke, u Much of the wildlife in this region comes out only at night. So after supper, let’s start a night watch.Volunteers will take turns to stay down here by the fire, away from the tents. Those who take part will get a chance to see a different world.”
“Isn't it dangerous?” someone asked.
“No, it’s quite safe,” the officer said.“There are no dangerous animals.Any volunteers?”
The kid who’d sat next to Alan on the bus volunteered.
Alan sat still.
Then one of the girls raised her hand.
“If a girl could do it, I could, too,” Alan thought. He volunteered.A few more kids raised their hands. Then the officer explained, “This is how it works. When the rest of you go to bed, the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of the watcher is to keep the fire going. After thirty minutes, he or she wakes up the next person.Do you still want to volunteer?”
Alan nodded but felt a little nervous.Sleeping in a tent with other campers sounded OK, but the idea of being alone in the dark made him afraid.
The officer showed the order of the watch.
At ten past two in the evening, Alan found himself sitting by the fire, in a great world of darkness. He had never been so afraid.Alan had to turn off his flashlight (手电筒) because he had used it too often. He looked at the stars and the rising moon.It wasn’t as dark as he’d thought it would be.He took comfort in that and tried to relax a little.
Looking around, Alan thought he saw a large bird flying down through the air and wondered if it was an owl (猫头鹰).He had seen small paw prints in the sand by the river. Paragraph 1:
