B: It’s about the damage caused by inadequate packing. Things are like this, I have just received a telegram from by SS East Wind under Order NO. 2308 have arrived in San Francisco. But , to our great surprise , they are not in proper condition. Z: Really? What’s the trouble then ? B: Quite a number of cartons were badly damaged. Many of the men’s shirts were water-stained and some of them were severely soiled.

Background briefing
Complaints or claims may sometimes airse in spite of our wellplanned and careful work in the performance of a contract. If a complaint or claim has to be made by the buyer,the matter should be investigated and the details should be laid before the party charged. Sometimes ,a reference to the previously satisfactory deliveries and services may help to win more sympathetic consideration of the present complaint or claim.
Z: Where are the goods now? B: The goods have been unloaded into the carrier’s house. As they are in such a damage condition, we will be able to take delivery. For this reason, my head office cabled me yesterday to let me get in touch with you.
Z: Though the complaint is true, there may be other factors in it. We should make it clear whether the damage was caused in transit or during the unloading process , or by other reasons.
B: The result of our investigation said that the damage was caused sometime in transit, but it is inadequate packing which allowed the package to open in the first place . We have to askfor a compensation to cover the loss incurred as a result of the inferior packing of the goods concrned.
