B Earthquakes happen very often in Tokyo, but Tokyo is not an unlucky city. Many special parks have been built in Tokyo to keep people safe during earthquakes. These parks look nothing different from the other parks, but when earthquakes happen, they become life -saving places.
Many useful things in those special parks can meet people’s basic needs.
For example, it is usually hard for people to get water after earthquakes. In the special parks, people can get drinking water from the water pump(泵). If people need to use toilets(厕所), they can choose special toilets that can be used without water. Also, the helicopter(直升机) can land on squares or baseball fields and bring food or other things to people. What’s more, if people need to cook in the parks, some special benches can become cooking things.
However, those useful things are not enough for people to face earthquakes. The most important part lies in training people. The parks, together with fire stations and the police, will train with local people at the usual time. This will let people think and move faster during real earthquakes and let them protect themselves better.
So, what can we do to protect ourselves from getting hurt in earthquakes? First, we need to check our furniture and make sure they won’t fall down easily. Second, when an earthquake happens, we need to stay under tables or desks and protect our head. Third, we can keep our door open and wear comfortable shoes during small earthquakes in order to get out safely.
34.What can we learn about the special parks from Paragraph 1?
A.The special parks can stop earthquakes.
B.There aren’t enough special parks in Tokyo.
C.The special parks look different from the common ones.
D.People can be safer in the special parks during earthquakes.
35.During earthquakes, people can find ________ in these special parks.
◆ drinking water◆ traditional toilets◆ personal planes◆ cooking things
A.◆◆B.◆◆C.◆◆D.◆◆
36.Why are useful things “not enough” for people?
A.Because they can’t work well.
B.Because self-help is more important.
C.Because the government doesn’t have enough money.
D.Because it’s hard for people to find them during earthquakes.
37.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.How to stay safe during earthquakes.
B.Why people should check their furniture.
C.How to prepare for danger before it comes.
D.What would happen in an earthquake.
C
Honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways?
Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees (黑猩猩), behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends (假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (猎食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, hides its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others hide their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know that a thief is watching them. So they go back later, dig the food, and hide it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can’t trust her, either.
38.A plover protects its young from a predator by ________.
A.getting closer to its young B.pretending to be hurt
C.leaving its young in another nest D.driving away the adult predator
39.By “Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky”, the writer means ________.
A.chimps are ready to attack others B.chimps can also be selfish
C.chimps envy the winners of the fight D.chimps are sometimes dishonest
40.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.
B.Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.
C.All the animals survive by fooling other animals.
D.The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner’s hand.
41.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.How do animals learn to lie?B.Does Mother Nature fool animals?
C.Do animals lie?D.How does honesty help animals survive?
D
They left the busy streets and went to a part of the town Scrooge never visited. It was a terrible place. The streets were dirty, and the smell was very bad. The houses and shops were of the poorest kind. The people were all thin, dirty, and they looked very ill. Everything was ugly.
They came to where an old man sat. He was selling dirty pieces of cloth, smelly old bones, and all kinds of old and useless things. As they watched, two old women and an old man, equally dirty, smelly, and ugly came into the shop. They carried large bags.
“Come and sit by the fire,” the shopkeeper said. “Tell me what you have to sell me.”
“Nothing a dead man will miss,” the first woman said with a nasty laugh.
“If he wanted to keep them after he was dead, why wasn’t he a good man when he was alive? If he had been, he would have had someone to look after him. He would not have died alone.”
“That’s very true,” said the second woman, putting a few clothes on the floor. “He got the death he deserved.” She pointed at the clothes. “What will you give me for those, Joe?” She asked the shopkeeper, adding, “I did no wrong taking them from the dead man’s house.”
The shopkeeper looked at everything the woman wanted to sell him and put a price on it. Then he added everything up. The final amount was very small.
“That’s not much,” the woman said.
“Take it or leave it,” the shopkeeper said. “I won’t pay a penny more.”

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
Dear Judy,
Sister, how are you?
I woke up this morning. It’s nearly Easter. Whenever it is Easter, I think of you. I’ll never forget seeing you for the first time when you were born. You were the sweetest little baby wrapped in a soft white blanket. How I loved kissing and holding you! I was a teenager and loved carrying you around. Sometimes people asked if you were my baby. I must have looked like a very young mother, but how proud I was in those moments.
However, things started to change for me as I never felt quite wanted. How sad when it was that I was green with envy.
Before your arrival, Mum was in no hurry to buy the things that I needed. But later I always had to wait and wait for her to pay my school fees or buy books and clothes. Everything was always late!
Your situation was different and Mum always made sure that you had the best of everything quickly. When you got a horse for your 6th birthday and started riding lessons, how jealous I was!
I slowly turned cold towards you and never gave you the warm hugs that you expected from me or showed an interest in your horse or your medals. I remember your sad face, probably wondering why I didn’t seem to care about you.
Today I considered that as I woke up. I have never spoken about this, or why that is so. Today I must say that I am very sorry for hurting your feelings. It was never your fault. You were too young to even realize it. All these years, you might have wondered what you did wrong that I didn't often speak with you.
Please forgive me! I want to be a real big sister to you again. If you can forgive me, we can start over and spend time together. You have turned into a beautiful young woman who I am so proud of. I would love to be close again.
Much love
