Dear Reader,
Imagine an 11-year-old girl whose days are often spent washing clothes, looking after a baby, working hard in the field.
Imagine a little girl who knows there will not be enough food for dinner, who can’t fill her stomach with water because it’s polluted, and w ho has watched life slip away from her father, little brother and sister because the family is too poor to see a doctor. Is it hard to believe? For Maria Pastora, these are the real life. Maria would gladly walk miles to school, but her mother, now alone, needs her badly at home. If Maria grows up without any schooling, what will be her future?
But for just 52 pennies a day, you can sponsor a child like Maria. Through “Save the Children”, you can help Maria’s mother get what she needs to turn their poor food into a good dinner and the money she needs to buy clothes and school things for Maria. To help Maria most, your money is put together with that of other sponsors, so hard-working people can help themselves. Build a school, a hospital…bring in clean water. This is what “Save the Children” has been about since 1932.
For you there are many rewards. Have the chance to write to or hear from your sponsored child. Receive photos or progress reports. Know you are reaching out to another person. Not with a handout(施舍物), but a “handup”. That’s how “Save the Children” works. But without you, it can’t work. Please take a moment now to fill in and post the form below to help a child like Maria and her village.

Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists
said “no” or “we don’t know.” But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文学家).They believe intelligent life exists (存
在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we still soon contact these beings.
Why ? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12billion
years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like
the Hubble Telescope(哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.”
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe.
But now, powerful telescopes allow scientists to discover smaller planets in other
solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak.
“It’s a long wa y away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way,
such as radio signals(信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now,
but we don’t have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing.
By 2185, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might
help each other.”
36.Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are .
A. astronomers
B. farmers
C. singers
D. drivers
37.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. The Age and Size of Earth.
B. The Only Planet with Intelligent
Life
C. Why Intelligent Life Might Exist.
D. Our Galaxy — The Milky Way
38.Why was it hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe in the past?
A. There were not any smaller planets.
B. There were not any powerful telescopes.
C. The astronomers were not interested in them.
D. The Galaxy didn’t exist at that time.
39.Why haven’t beings from space visited us yet according to Shostak?
A. They’re afraid of us.
B. It’s a long way away.
C. They don’t want to see us.
D. They don’t know how to use radio signals.
40.What is Shostak’s attitude we can learn from the last paragraph?
A. worried
B. satisfied
C. positive
D. negative

The human brain can hold much more information than most computers. However, there
is another difference between humans and computers.
Computers don't forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, but everyone can improve their memory if they want to. Here
are some suggestions.
◆Try to use new information immediately(立刻). For example, if you meet someone who says "Hi! I'm Carlos," don't just say "Hello." Repeat the person's name. Say"
41 "
◆ 42 For example, it's hard to memorize 118244153. But if you break it into three parts--118/244/153—it becomes easier.
◆Write out what you need to remember over and over again. This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially for memorizing formulas (公式) or facts.
◆ 43 . If you bring what you've learned back to your mind, they become easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it’s a good idea to review the new things you learned that day.
◆Discuss with a fri end. 44 You can have a discussion about what's right and what's wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.
◆Never tell yourself that you have a bad memory. 45 .And everyone's memory gets better if they use it often enough.
All of the suggestions are helpful. If you follow them, you are certain to improve your memory.
A. Hello, I am Sophia. Glad to meet you!
B. You can always do something to help improve your memory.
C. Hello, Carlos.
D. Always review information
E. It is always easier to remember things through discussions.
G. Because your friends can share sadness with you.
F. Break a big number into smaller parts.

第Ⅱ卷写作(共20分)
One possible version:
Today, more and more students go to school with mobile phones. Many students say that it’s right to do that. Firstly, it is easier for students to keep in touch with their parents and friends. Secondly, mobile phones can give students useful information for study and make their lives colorful.
However, others don’t think so. They think mobiles make students concentrate less on their lessons. Besides, they often spend too much money on phone calls and sending messages.
In my opinion, it’s convenient for students to take mobile phones to school, because when they meet with danger, they can ask for help. So students should be allowed
to take mobile phones to school as long as they use them properly.
