Like humans, dogs donate blood too, and not every dog can donate blood. The dogs are screened(检查)for health first. Dogs must have the correct blood type, weigh at least 55 pounds and be younger than 8 years old. They may donate three or four pints(品脱) a year, which can help animals that are suffering from illnesses like cancer or an accident like being hit by a car. One pint can save up to three dogs.
Owners volunteer their pets for the short procedure (程序), which requires no sedative, a kind of medicine given to calm him or her down. It's the dog that finally chooses to lie still and give. If the dogs want to get up and leave, they can.
Sandy Lucas brought her 7-year-old black German shepherd, Rains, to the bloodmobile(流动血站) when it was parked at her small village. Sandy said she wouldn't have troubled herself with highway traffic and city parking problems to take the dog to Penn Vet's animal hospital in downtown Philadelphia, which is twice as far as her home. But the bloodmobile made it easy to find out if Rains could donate. "I was very, very excited that she had the right blood that was needed to help another dog out," said Sandy. "We'll surely do it again."

Shopping for clothes is not the same for men as it is for women. A man goes shopping because he needs something. He will decide what to buy in advance. He knows what he wants, and his aim is to find it and buy it. Most men simply walk into a shop and ask someone for what they want. If the shop has it, and the price is good, they often finish shopping in less than five minutes, to everyone's satisfaction.
For a man, some problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants. At that time, the salesman tries to sell the man something else. He offers something that is almost the same as the article the man wants. Good salespeople say, "I know this jacket is not what you really want, sir, but would you like to try it for size. It happens to be the color you like." Most men don't care about this and may answer, "This may be the right color and the right size, but I won't waste my time trying it on."
For a woman, it is different. Most of the time, she goes shopping not because she needs something. She hasn't decided what she wants before she goes shopping. She just goes to "have a look around". At first, she thinks about finding something that everyone will say "It looks good on you." Most women are always looking for bargains(特价商品). A woman may easily spend an hour looking at dresses before she wants to try on. It is a tiresome(令人厌烦的) process. Most clothes stores provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

Taking away a city's rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can't eat or use. If we kept these things we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.
In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of city to a dump(垃圾堆).Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage (排污) system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets(厕所), bathtubs and other places.
To keep mice(老鼠) and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you'd never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.
In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything but the metal (金属). The mental can be reused and recycled. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles(堆)where they slowly change into something called humans, which looks like black earth. It is rich with the kinds of things that feed plants and help them grow.

Man has always wanted to fly. Some of the greatest men in history have thought about the problem. One of these, for example, was the great Italian artist, Leonardo da Vinci. In the sixteenth century he made designs for machines that could fly. But they were never built.
Throughout history, other less famous men have wanted to fly as well. An example was a man in England about 800 years ago. He made a pair of wings* from chicken feathers. Then he fixed them to his body and jumped into the air from a tall building. As you can imagine, he did not fly very far. Instead he fell to the ground and broke every bone in his body.
The first real try took place in France in 1783. The two Montgolfier brothers knew that hot air rises. If they could fill a large balloon with hot air, they thought it would rise into the air and fly. They were right. They made a very large "hot air balloon" of cloth and paper. They filled it with hot air and the balloon rose two hundred metres into the air. It fell to earth about three kilometres away. In September of that year, both the King and Queen of France came to see the balloon. They watched it carry the very first air passengers into the sky. We do not know what the passengers felt about the trip as they were a cock, a duck, and a sheep. But we do know that the trip lasted for 8 minutes and then the animals landed safely. Two months later, two men did the same thing. They rose above Paris in a balloon of the same kind. Their trip lasted for twenty-five minutes and they traveled about 8 kilometers.

Now more and more teenagers actively look for volunteering opportunities, too. They volunteer because they think it will be fun or they will learn something. They also like the idea of being helpful to others, even if it is just handing out books for the teacher. As they get older, these reasons are still the same, but there are other important reasons for volunteering such as learning on-the-job, getting work experience, and improving their social life.
All volunteers bring joy to the people they help in so many ways. They might read books to the blind, fix up broken homes, find ways to get water for villages, Could you be a volunteer? What kind of volunteer work could you do? There is someone in the world who needs you.

Lately, people have entered the forests where chimpanzees live. The chimpanzees have been getting sick because of people's diseases. In addition, people are hunting chimpanzees. Their number is becoming smaller and smaller.
Chimpanzees live in the plains and forests of Africa. They eat many kinds of foods, from plant leaves and seeds to insects and even other small animals. Chimpanzees' favourite food is fruit.
Chimpanzees are very clever and they can use tools well. They can catch bugs by using sticks, and break nuts by using rocks.
The world's forests are much smaller than they were before. Roads were built in deep forests, so people start to enter the forests where chimpanzees live. That may lead to many problems.
