Most musicians agree that the best violins were first made in Cremona,
Italy, about 200 years ago. These violins sound better than any others. They even sound better than violins made today. Violin makers and scientists try to make instruments like the Italian violins. But many aren’t the same. Musicians still prefer the old ones.
Some people think it is the age of the violins. But not all old violins sound wonderful. Only the old violins from Cremona are special. So age cannot be answered very quickly.
Other people think the secret to those is the wood. The wood must be from certain kinds of trees. But the kind of wood may not be so important.
I t may be more important to cut the mood in a special way. Wood for a violin must be cut very carefully. It has to be the right size and shape. The smallest difference will change the sound of the violin. Musicians sometimes think that this was the secret of the Italians. Maybe they understand more than we do about how to cut the wood.
Size and shape may not be the answer either. Scientists can make new ones that are exactly the same size and shape., But the new violins still do not sound as good as the old ones . Some scientists think the secret may be the varnish (清漆). Varnish is what covers the wood of the violin. It makes the wood look shiny (光亮的). It also helps the sound of the instrument. No one knows what the Italian violin makers used in their varnish.

Dear David,
I am very upset and I need some help. You know I will finish college soon, and I have to decide about my future. I like the computer and I really want to work on it.
Last Sunday I asked my family for same advice. They had quite different
ideas about my future! My father said I should go to university and study computer engineering. My mother thought I should get a job as a computer salesperson, so I could make a lot of money. My brother wanted to start a website design company with me. My sister did poorly in computer science and she wanted me to teach her in her school. My uncle ran a famous computer company. He hoped I could join his company. As you see, it is very difficult for me to decide which one is the best. What do you think? Write me soon.
Yours,
Michael
