My Life in Modern China
Hi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 10 years old. I live in a big city in China called Shanghai with my mom, dad, and little sister Huihui. Our family's life is pretty modern and different from how my grandparents used to live when they were young. Let me tell you all about it!
Our Home
We live in a tall apartment building right in the center of the city. Our apartment has two bedrooms, one for my parents and one for me and Huihui to share. It also has a living room, kitchen, and bathroom. Everything is kind of small and compact compared to the big houses some families have, but we like our cozy little place.
My parents had the apartment decorated really nicely with modern furniture and decorations from IKEA. We have a big
flat-screen TV in the living room that me and Huihui like to watch cartoons and movies on. The kitchen has all these cool
appliances like a microwave, rice cooker, and fancy oven that my mom uses to cook our meals. Unlike my grandparents' old house, our apartment building has elevators to take us up and down from our home on the 18th floor.
School Life
I go to a elementary school pretty close to our apartment building. I just have to walk a few blocks and I'm there. At school, all my classrooms have air conditioning to keep us cool, and we have lots of high-tech teaching tools like interactive whiteboards, tablets and education apps we use for learning. My favorite class is math because we get to play fun math games on the tablets.
During lunchtime, I don't need to bring a packed lunch from home. Our school has a big cafeteria with all kinds of yummy Chinese dishes to choose from. I usually get a tray with rice, a vegetable dish, and maybe some dumplings or noodles.
After school, my mom doesn't have to come pick me up. I just go to the after-school program at my school and stay there until my parents get off work. We have classroom time for doing homework, but we also play games, do crafts, and sometimes even take fun field trips.
Family Routines
Once my mom and dad get off work, we like to spend time together as a family in the evenings. For dinner, we might cook something simple at home, order delivery food from apps like Eleme or Meituan, or go out to one of the many restaurants and food courts near our home. Huihui's favorite is going to the big Western mall to get pizza or McDonald's.
After dinner, we'll do different activities around the house. Sometimes my dad will play video games and I'll watch or join him. My mom likes watching her favorite streaming shows on the TV. Other times, we'll all browse things online together using our smartphones, tablets, and laptops. I like going on kid websites and apps to watch videos, play games, and learn new things.
On the weekends, we try to get out and do some fun family activities. We'll go to big parks in the city and let me and Huihui run around and play. We also really enjoy going to the mall to do some shopping, eat in the food court, catch a movie at the theater, or visit the indoor playgrounds and arcades. My parents will often have us do educational things too like going to science museums, historical sites, or special exhibits.
Modern Conveniences
Living in 21st century China gives our family a lot of conveniences that my grandparents never had. With phone apps
and online services, we can easily get food, groceries, clothes, and anything else we need delivered right to our door. My dad sometimes gets packages from online stores almost every day! He also uses apps to pay bills, transfer money, make appointments, and do lots of other things.
Speaking of transportation, we don't actually own a car since parking is so expensive and the traffic is so bad in Shanghai. Instead, we get around the city really easily using subway trains, buses, bike shares, taxis we can call using apps, and car services like Didi. If we ever need to go somewhere far away, we can easily book plane tickets to get there fast.
My parents have phones that can do just about anything too. They use them to video call relatives, check addresses and directions, transfer money, pay for things using mobile wallets, look up information online, take photos and videos, and way more. I even have a kid smartwatch that my parents can use to check on my location, call me, and send me messages.
Other Modern Things
Aside from technology, there are lots of other modern conveniences and changes in how we live today. Traditional Chinese medicines and natural remedies are still pretty popular,
but my family mostly uses modern Western medicines and sees doctors at big hospitals if we get sick or need treatments.
We buy most of our clothes, toys, household items, and other products from shopping malls and big chain stores in the city rather than markets and small shops. And when it comes to food, we buy a lot of pre-packaged snacks and meals, frozen foods, and ingredients from supermarkets rather than farms and wet markets.
For fun, my family definitely loves experiencing different modern forms of entertainment. We stream movies, shows, music and videos from online platforms. We go to concerts, amusement parks, museums and touring exhibits that come through Shanghai. I personally really enjoy spending my free time playing video games and going to gaming lounges with friends.
So as you can see, my family has a pretty modern lifestyle here in one of China's biggest cities. Of course, not everyone in China lives in such urban and technology-filled environments, especially in more rural areas. But overall, the modern way of life with all its conveniences is becoming more and more common across the country as China continues developing and changing with the times.
Anyway, thanks for reading about my experiences! I'm just a regular 10-year-old city kid in China enjoying my family, friends, video games, and everything else the modern world has to offer. Let me know if you have any other questions!

My Modern Life in China
Hi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 10 years old. I live in a big city in China called Shanghai with my mom, dad, and little sister Lily. Our lives are pretty modern compared to how things used to be a long time ago. Let me tell you what a typical day is like for my family!
I wake up around 7am when my mom calls me for breakfast. We usually have congee (a savory rice porridge) with some veggie sides like pickled radish or salted duck eggs. Yum! After eating, I get dressed for school. My school uniform is a white shirt with red accents and blue pants or shorts depending on the weather.
My dad drives me and Lily to our schools since they aren't too far from each other. The streets are always busy with cars, buses, motorcycles, bikes and people walking. The traffic can be
crazy! Once we arrive at school, I kiss my dad goodbye and head to class.
At my school, we have lessons in Chinese, math, English, science, art, music and more. We use electronic tablets to read texts and take notes instead of old-fashioned books and paper. The classroom desks even have screens built into them! During recess I like to play basketball or chase games with my friends in the yard.
For lunch, the cafeteria ladies serve up really tasty dishes like braised chicken with mushrooms over rice or beef noodle soup. We can pick from lots of fruit for dessert too. After eating, we have a little rest period before more afternoon classes.
School lets out around 3:30pm. Some days I go to extracurricular classes like coding, art, or tennis club. Other days my mom picks me and Lily up to go run errands. We might go to the grocery store, mall, or get a treat like bubble tea or pastries from a bakery. The malls here are huge with every kind of store you can imagine!
Once we're home in the evening, I work on any homework I have while my mom starts making dinner. A lot of people in China order food delivery, but my parents like to cook healthy meals at home. We'll have dishes like stir-fried veggies, steamed
fish, or sweet and sour pork. For dessert it's usually just some fresh fruit.
After dinner, we watch TV shows or movies streamed online. My parents don't let me and Lily use our smart phones or tablets too much though. We like to video call with our grandparents who live far away. Sometimes my dad will play video games and I can watch or join depending on if it's appropriate for kids.
Around 9pm, it's time for me to get ready for bed. I take a shower, put on my pajamas, and do my before-bed routine like brushing my teeth. Then I read books on my tablet or listen to audiobooks for about half an hour before lights out at 9:30pm. That's a pretty typical day for me as a modern kid in China!
On the weekends, we like to go do fun activities together as a family. We may visit parks, museums, the library, shopping areas, or even take little trips out of the city. Some of my favorite places are the Natural History Museum, Century Park where you can ride pedal boats, and the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum with its awesome interactive exhibits.
Living in a modern city in China is really convenient in a lot of ways. We can use smartphone apps to do things like order grocery delivery, make doctor appointments, get transit directions, pay bills, and more. Most places also accept mobile
pay instead of cash. There are high-speed rail trains to travel between cities too.
My parents say things are much more developed and advanced compared to when they were kids. They remember not having air conditioning, computers or even some modern home appliances! Now we have smart homes where we can control the lights, temperature and other settings by voice, remote or apps.
Of course, there are still some challenges that come with living in such a big, populated city. The cost of living is pretty high, especially for housing. There can be a lot of traffic, smog or crowds depending on the time of day. We have to be careful about internet safety and not spending too much time on electronic devices too.
But overall, I feel really fortunate to live in a prosperous and modern place like Shanghai. Our lives are made easier by all the conveniences and technologies available. I have lots of educational opportunities, activities, and ways to have fun too. Even though China has developed rapidly, we still celebrate our culture's rich history and traditions as well.
That's a glimpse into my current modern lifestyle! As I get older, I'm sure there will be even more changes and advancements. Maybe one day we'll have flying cars or robot
assistants helping around the house. Who knows what the future will be like?! For now, I'm just enjoying being a kid in 21st century China.

My Life in Modern China
Hi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 10 years old. I live with my parents and grandparents in a big city in China. Our life is pretty modern and different from how my grandparents grew up. Let me tell you about it!
Where I Live
We stay in a tall apartment building right in the heart of the city. Our apartment has three bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and two bathrooms. It's not huge but it's very comfortable for the four of us. The best part is that we're close to everything - my school, markets, restaurants, parks and the subway station.
Most families in cities live in apartments now, not old-style courtyard homes. I've never seen a courtyard home in real life, only in pictures! Our building has over 20 floors with neighbors from all walks of life.
Getting Around
My parents both work downtown so they take the subway every morning. The subway system here is amazing - there are lines going every which way under the city streets. It's incredibly convenient but also gets really crowded during rush hour.
I take the school bus to my elementary school nearby. The buses here are huge! They can carry over 50 kids at a time. A few of my classmates get dropped off and picked up by their parents' private cars or fancy electric cars. But many families don't own a car since having one in the city is expensive and you sit in so much traffic anyway.
For longer trips, we take the high-speed bullet train which is awesome! The trains go over 300 km/hr so we can get to other cities pretty quickly. Flying is an option too, but the airports are usually quite far from city centers.
Technology Galore!
Modern technology is everywhere in our lives and I love it! We have computers, smartphones, robots, AI assistants and so much more.
At home, we have a giant flatscreen TV, a smart speaker, and gaming systems. I play loads of games and watch shows, but I'm only allowed a limited time per day for that stuff. My
grandparents prefer watching regular TV channels and ancient Chinese dramas!
My dad works in software so he's glued to his laptop and smartphone a lot. My mom uses apps a ton too - for ordering groceries, buying stuff online, reading news, getting rides and so on. It's wild how you can do everything from your phone these days!
In my classroom, we have an interactive whiteboard, tablets for every student and even a little robot that dances! Classes are very interactive and multimedia-based now. We rarely just read from textbooks.
For fun, I love browsing Xiaohongshu and Douyin (Chinese TikTok) and making silly videos with my friends. We also play loads of online multiplayer games together. Sometimes we video call and watch movies while chatting too.
Food Everywhere!
Food is such a huge part of life here! There are restaurants, street vendors, bakeries and eateries at every corner. The variety of dishes is mind-boggling - from classic Chinese cuisines like Sichuan, Cantonese and Shandong to international foods like Italian, Japanese, Indian and more.
My absolute favorites are dumplings, noodles, hot pot, burgers and pizza. I know it's an unhealthy mix but they all taste sooooo good! My grandma still cooks traditional veggie and meat dishes at home which I find pretty boring compared to restaurant food.
Food delivery is super popular - you can order meals from thousands of restaurants via apps and have them brought right to your door in 30 minutes usually. My parents order delivery fairly often since they're busy working. We pick up groceries and fresh ingredients frequently from supermarkets and wet markets too.
Work and School
Like I mentioned, my parents are hardworking office-goers. My dad is a programmer while my mom works in finance. Their day starts very early and they return home around 7-8 pm typically. It's an intense work culture here.
My routine is a little different! I wake up at 7 am and leave for school at 8am after breakfast. My school day goes until 3pm, followed by after-school activities like Chinese calligraphy, robotics club or basketball practice on different days. I return home around 5 pm, have dinner with my family and then it's
homework time. I sleep by 10 pm latest so I don't stay up too late.
Most kids my age have pretty packed schedules between school, homework and extra-curricular activities. Our parents want us to do well academically and also develop
interests/hobbies. The education system is extremely competitive here.
Living the High Life?
Overall, I'd say our lifestyle in big cities is very fast-paced, modern and comfortable. We have access to great education, technology, conveniences and amenities. There is always something fun to do!
At the same time, it can get quite stressful with the long working hours, homework load, pollution and expensive costs. My grandparents reminisce about the simpler times of their childhood in small towns. I can't relate as I've only known this city life.
I don't mind the modern lifestyle for now when I'm young. As I get older though, I wonder if I'll crave more peaceful, laidback living at some point. I guess I'll have to wait and see! For
now, I'm making the most of growing up in this dynamic, rapidly changing China.。
