第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)Can you be too beautiful? It is hardly a problem that most of us have to bother — as much as we might like to dream that it were the case.
Yet the blessings and curses of beauty have been a long-standing interest in psychology. Do those blessed with shiny faces and an attractive body live in a cloud of appreciation — or does it sometimes pay to be ordinary?
At the most basic level, beauty might be thought to carry a kind of halo (光环) around it; we see that someone has one good quality, and by association, our deep mind may assume that they have other good ones too.
Even in the courts, a pleasing appearance can work its magic. Attractive criminals are likely to get less strict sentences, or to escape punishment entirely; attractive plaintiffs (原告), meanwhile, are more likely to win their case and get bigger financial settlements. “It’s an effect seen everywhere,” says Walker.
But if beauty pays in most circumstances, there are still situations where it can have opposite results. While attractive men may be considered better leaders, for instance, hidden sexist prejudices (偏见) can work against attractive women, making them less likely to be hired for high-level jobs that require power. And as you might expect,
good-looking people of both sexes run into envy — one study found that if you are interviewed by someone of the same sex, they may be less likely to employ you if they judge that you are more attractive than they are.
More worryingly, being beautiful or handsome could harm your medical care. We tend to link good looks to health, meaning that illnesses are often taken less seriously when they affect the good-looking. When treating people for pain, for instance, doctors tend to take less care over the more attractive people.
Ultimately, scientists point out that focusing too much on your appearance can itself be harmful if it creates stress and anxiety — even for those already blessed with good looks. “If you are crazy about attractiveness, it may affect your experience and
interactions,” she says. It’s an outdated saying, but no amount of beauty can make up for a bad personality. As the writer Dor othy Parker put it so elegantly: “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”
1、From paragraph 1, we can learn that _______.
A.some may be bothered by their unattractive appearance
B.most people are not afraid of being too beautiful
C.we might always dream about being bothered by others
D.being too beautiful can be a problem bothering everyone
2、Which is the benefit for beautiful people?
A.All attractive plaintiffs have more chances to get away with punishment. B.Women with pleasing appearance will always be considered as better leaders. C.Good-looking people are often regarded as having many good qualities. D.Beautiful criminals are more likely to persuade the judge and win the case.
3、The writer mentioned the underlined sentence in the last paragraph to _______. A.persuade us to pay more attention to our looks from now on
B.suggest that beauty can help make a better personality
C.encourage us to focus more on improving our personality
D.ask ugly people to have more confidence in their personality
4、What might be the best title for the passage?
A.Beauty, a blessing? B.Sexist Prejudice.
C.Real beauty. D.Benefits Beauty holds.
22.(8分)On my first day of high school, going into math class, I was pointed and laughed at by two of my classmates. I initially thought my fly was open, or that something was stuck in my teeth. But as I took my seat, I heard one student whisper, “Why is a black boy taking Honors?” So, my fly wasn’t open. An honors level class had simply been taken by a student whose skin was brown.
Many people think my clothes should be big enough for me to live in, or expect me to listen to only “black music.” In seventh grade, a group of my classmates fixed their cold stares on my clothes. They called out to me, “Go get your gangsta clothes.” In one of my Spanish classes, the teacher asked me, “Do you like rap music or rock music more?” I replied, “Rock.” The look of shock on my classmates’ faces made me uncomfortable.
Now I still take all Honors courses. I still wear clothes that fit me. My music library covers from rock to pop to techno, and almost everything in between. When it comes to choosing my friends, I am still colorblind. I continue to do my best to work in school in order to reach my goals; and yet, when I look in the mirror, I still see skin of that same brown.
I believe in being myself. I believe that I myself should decide who I am and what actions I take in life. In high school, popularity often depends on your willingness to follow trends. And I’ve been told that it doesn’t get much easier going into adulthood. But the only other option is to sacrifice my personality for the satisfaction and approval of others. This can be appealing, but I’m not going to do that.
1、Why did his classmates laugh at him?
A.His fly was open.
B.Something was stuck in his teeth.
C.He went into the wrong classroom.
D.They had prejudice against him.
2、What are black people usually believed to do?
A.Listen to rap music. B.Wear small clothes.
C.Take Honors courses. D.Attend Spanish classes.
3、W hat does the underlined word “colorblind” probably mean?
A.Making friends of the same skin color.
B.Having no idea what friends to make.
C.Treating people equally and fairly.
D.Feeling hurt and offended inside.
4、What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Following Popular Trends B.Being Content with Myself C.Having Faith in Skin Color D.Changing My Personality 23.(8分)There are a couple of ways to forecast the destructive potential of a hurricane so that people in the way can take adequate precautions.Satellite images of cloud patterns can be analyzed to estimate peak wind speeds, but the estimates are often way off the mark.Specialized aircraft can fly into a storm to measure the winds directly, but the flights are costly.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology come up with a third
way:listening to a storm underwater.
In a paper to be published in Geophysical Research Letters,Nicholas C.Makris and a former graduate student,Joshua D.Wilson, report a strong connection between the intensity of sound recorded by an undersea microphone in the mid﹣Atlantic and the wind power of a hurricane that passed over it.They say that such microphones, known as hydrophones, could be a safe and relatively inexpensive means of estimating hurricane force.
Dr.Makris and Dr Wilson, who are now with Applied Physical Sciences Corporation, worked out the theory of underwater acoustic monitoring of storms in a 2005 paper."To be very frank with you,it's a mystery what makes storms noisy underwater." Dr.Makris said. The most popular idea currently is that it has something to do with oscillating are bubbles(气泡振动).
The researchers then went looking for experimental data to back their theory, and found it from a hydrophone placed at a depth of 2,500 feet by the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration. It happened that Hurricane Gert passed over the area in September 1999,and a hurricane﹣hunter plane directly measured the wind speed at the same time. The hydrophone data showed sound intensity rising when the storm's outside wind "wall" passed over, and again when the inside wall, the most destructive part of the storm near the eye, passed over."We got a beautiful connection," Dr.Makris said,"between the hydrophone data and the actual wind speeds as measured by the aircraft."
Dr.Makris is conducting additional experiments, working with the Mexican Navy off the west coast of Mexico. The eventual goal,he said, would be permanent hydrophones in known hurricane zones or temporary ones that could be easily laid by plane or ship in the path of a coming storm.
1、It can be inferred from the passage that.
A.The scientists didn't gain any support from different fields.
B.Dr.Makris and Dr.Wilson have figured out what makes storms noisy underwater.
C.The scientists have found the relationship between the changes of sound intensity and the force of the hurricane.
D.There are several creative ways for people to forecast the force of the coming
hurricane.
2、Why is Dr.Makris now making other experiments with the help of the Mexican Navy off the west coast of Mexico?
A.To place permanent hydrophones in some zones.
B.To collect more images of cloud patterns.
C.To be secure in carrying out their experiments.
D.To get more information from the hurricane﹣hunter planes.
3、Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Ways to Stop the Destructive Force of a Hurricane
B.Connection between the Intensity of Sound and the Wind Power of a Hurricane C.Hydrophones,Safe but Expensive Means of Estimating Hurricane Force D.Measuring a Hurricane by Sound Underwater
24.(8分)Many young people these days adore the advertised magazine body and become too focused on attaining this image instead of worrying more about what lasts and even grows over time. But could you imagine being considered beautiful for years, and suddenly being ugly after moving to another continent? It is a sad reality that people don’t realize how vacillating the idea of beauty can be from one country to another.
Think of the most typical American girl you know. Is she blonde haired with white skin and light eyes, and does she love shopping or sports? Now place this girl in the heart of Africa, a place where beauty is placed on what you can control. The Maasai tribe in Kenya focuses on how clean people are, and how stylish their piercings (穿孔) are. This tribe’s culture is to be a brave fighter, so they will cut their skin with patterns in it to show that they are strong. If you don’t look fierce, you are not beautiful.
Other countries like North Korea and South Korea have their own unique views on beauty. In an interview, a woman who has lived in both North and South Korea claims that beauty in North Korea is based more on your ability to be a good woman and wife. She says that women in North Korea are less concerned about fashion and beauty in the physical sense. She says they did have a time when big eyes were a big deal and everyone wanted to get double eyelid surgery. This is something extreme and could perhaps be influenced by Western culture. And the idea of getting surgery done to look more attractive is crazy.
1、What does the underlined word “vacillating” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A.Inconsistent. B.Reasonable. C.Unusual. D.Similar.
2、The Maasai tribe in Kenya is mentioned to show that in their eyes _______. A.getting dirty is stylish
B.looking fierce is beautiful
C.strong people cut their skin
D.American girls love shopping
3、According to the woman interviewed, women in North Korea now_______.
A.care a lot about their appearance
B.put the beauty of eyes in the first place
C.pay great attention to their ability
D.are crazy about double eyelid surgery
4、What does the text mainly tell us?
A.Inner beauty is of great importance.
B.Ideas of beauty vary among culture groups.
C.Different ways are needed to admire true beauty.
D.Fashion magazines easily influence young people.
25.(10分)“This way, everyone.” said the young Bahamian as he led the way to the hoar. As the boat moved over the waves, I thought back eleven years to my first island visit via a cruise ship. As we landed, I noticed a sign advertising swimming with dolphins. I looked at my mother; she knew exactly what I wanted, but I was too young. “Maybe some other time,” she said. I think everyone knows that those four words usually translate to never. It made me, a little boy, depressed for many days. From that day on, it was my dream to swim with those gentle creatures.
Now, after 15 minutes of travelling, we reached the Sanctuary Bay. As we arrived, I saw the gray creatures showing off their unique talent before my eyes. We were led off the boat, past a back building. Our guide told us we would have the pleasure of spending the next 90 minutes with Kaholo, a young male, and Robola, the largest female, who is quite famous for having played the lead in the film Zeus and Roxanne.
My father and I were joined by four others and followed the man once more. He told us to jump into the water while he let the dolphins into that part of the bay. For the first 20 minutes, we could go anywhere and touch the dolphins as they swam by.
Kaholo and Robola must have known I was their biggest fan because they swam towards me as if I had had fish. After the introductory period, they jumped over our heads. I got a hug and kiss from Robola, and also learned how to have Kaholo talk to me.
This was by far the most magical experience of my life. Next time your parents say “Maybe some other day”, have faith in them. Your dreams are important to them too, and they will do whatever they can to make it possible, because dreams can come true. 1、What was the author’s dream according to the text?
A.Travelling with his parents.
B.Swimming with dolphins.
C.Visiting the Sanctuary Bay.
D.Watching a film played by dolphins.
2、How did the author feel after the first island visit?
A.Excited. B.Puzzled.
C.Unhappy. D.Energetic.
3、What did Kaholo and Robola do during the visit?
A.They stayed away from the author.
B.They learnt to have a talk to the author.
C.They had special interest in the author’s fish.
D.They showed a friendly attitude towards the author.
4、What’s the best title for the text?
A.Dreams Do Come True
B.Play with Dolphins
C.My Parents’ Promise
D.The First Island Visit
