If you didn't look at them, they weren't there , right? On seeing those in rags on the corner, I only wanted the light to turn green fast enough so that I wouldn't have to keep pretending not to see them.
Then ,one day, as I was holding the hand of my best friend Jane who was young but dying of breast cancer ,she told me that she made every moment count by slowing down and by seeing everything .I held her hand for five years and then she passed away. She did teach me something. It took a while for her words to really sink in. I can be a slow learner.
I started by seeing everything, and focused on their presence. One day I saw a Vietnam veteran(老兵). I asked him what would make his day.
"A hot cup of coffee," he told me.
I bought him a cup of coffee a stack of pancakes, some eggs, and so on. After our meal Together ,I asked him if there was anything else that would make his life a bit easier.
"A new pair of socks, "he said.
Socks ,really? I actually happened to be wearing a nice pair of wool hiking socks at that very moment. I told him that I wanted to give him the pair I was wearing ,if he would accept it. Finally, he agreed. We sat down on a bench, and he started to first take off his boots, then remove the black socks that had once been white off his feet.
I think a layer or two of skin might have come off with them. Taking his new pair of socks, he held the socks up to his cheeks and said they were warm and smelled as good as me, pools of tears in his eyes.
Such a simple luxury (奢侈品) I used to take for granted. Now ,I always have an extra pair with me in my car. They are always my best pair ,just waiting to be given away.

Facebook study shows ‘likes’ reveal a lot
Do you like your fries straight or curly? The answer may reveal more about you than you think.
According to a Cambridge University study published Monday looking at how much what people “like” on Facebook can reveal about who they are, people who openly declare their affinity for curly fries on Facebook tend to have higher IQs.
Click by click, Facebook users are building a surprisingly difference of themselves, even without filling out their social networking pictures. Researchers published the article online at the Proceedings for the National Academy of the Sciences, showing off how they were able to figure out characteristics such as gender, personality type, political views and sexual orientation of individuals based on what 58,000 Facebook users decided to “like” on sites around the Web.
All of the information in the study, the report said, was in the public field. Researchers found that they could, for example, correctly guess a man’s sexual orientation 88 percent of the time by analyzing the kinds of TV shows and movies he liked. It also found that few gay men — less than 5 percent in the study — identify with groups that openly declare their sexual orientation, so a man’s preference for “Britney Spears” or “Desperate Housewives” was more useful in predictions. Similarly, the researchers also found that they could figure out if a Facebook user used drugs with about 65 percent accuracy based on their expressed public preferences. The study even included “like” predictors that could tell whether users’ parents had separated when they were young vs. whether they had not.
Researchers told the British paper that they hope this study raises users’ awareness about the kind of information they may not realize they’re sharing with a wider audience.
In some cases, the study said, this data could be beneficial to help improve marketing recommendations or in psychology research. But the study also raised concerns that it’s too easy to gather telling data about users without obtaining their permission. “One can imagine situations in which such predictions, even if incorrect, could threat an individual’s well-being, freedom or even life,” researchers said in the study’s conclusion.
Facebook users can change the privacy settings on what they’ve liked through the sites settings to keep their fry — or any other kind of preference — out of the public's reach.
5.Analyzing what the users like on Facebook, ___________ can be figured out.
A gender and personality
B political views and health condition
C sexual orientation and marriage status
D gender and job
6. If a user shows his like on Britney Spears or “Desperate Housewives”, he is likely to be a/an ________.
A gay man
B old woman
C housewife
D woman
7. The accuracy of the guessing some facts about a Facebook user is ________.
A very high
B very low
C completely right
D completely wrong
8. What is the positive significance of analyzing a user’s preference?
A raising public awareness of internet crime
B telling Facebook users’ sex and personality
C gathering and analyzing users’ personal preferences
D improving marketing recommendations or psychological research
9. There are some worries about predicting users’personal information because _____.
A their personal information is likely to be sold
B their privacy can be threatened or be abused
C French fry companies may make use of their information
D their IQs can be revealed

Certain people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you’ve known them half your life. 11________And once we know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves.
How is it done? Here are several skills that good talkers have. 12
First of all, good talkers ask questions. 13 One well known businessman says, “At business lunches, I always ask people what they did this morning. It’s a common question, but it will get things going.” From there you can move on to other matters—sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.
Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen for the answer. This point seems clear, but it isn’t. Your questions should have a point and help to tell
what sort of person you are talking to. 14
Real listening at least means something. 15 If someone sticks to one topic, you can take it as a fact that he’ll be really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to tones of voice. If the voice sounds dull, then, it’s time for you to change the subject.
Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with occasion of parting. If you’re saying good-bye, you may give him a firm handshake and say, “I’ve really enjoyed meeting you.” If you want to see that person again, don’t keep it secret. Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if they’ve known you half their lives.
A. If you follow the skills, they will help you put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.
B. These people have something in common.
C. First it means not change the subject of conversation.
D. And in this way, they will feel you are their life-long friend.
E. Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answer a question.
F. But you have to pay attention to the tone voice.
G. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively.
