I work in London at a large hospital as a nursing officer. It's what a lot of people call a male nurse, which I think is the most ridiculous term I've ever come across. It implies that a nurse ought to be female and that by being male, I'm different. The other thing is that people always say, "I suppose you really wanted to be a doctor", just because I'm a man. They cannot imagine that I really wanted to be a nurse and that it isn't just that I failed to be a doctor. And what they don't realize is the work's completely different. You know, as a male nurse, you've much more contact with the patients and you know, a long-term responsibility for their welfare. Huh, there's no way I'd want to be a doctor. Well, except for the money, of course. Why has he chosen this job?A. Because he failed to become a doctorB. Because he likes to be responsibleC. Because he finds it interestingD. Because it means more money.。

To be still more specific, I want them to have the right to decide if, when, how much, and by whom they want to be taught and the right to decide whether they want to learn in a school and if so which one and for how much of the time. No human right, except the right to life itself, is more fundamental than this. A person's freedom of learning is part of his freedom of thought, even more basic than his freedom of speech. If we take from someone his right to decide what he will be curious about, we destroy his freedom of thought. We say, in effect, you must think not about what interests and concerns you, but about what interests and concerns us. This right of each of us to control our own learning is now in danger. When we put into our laws the highly authoritarian notion that someone should and could decide what all young people were to learn and beyond that, could do whatever might seem necessary (which now includes dosing them with drugs) to compel them to learn it, we took a long step down a very steep and dangerous path. The requirement that a child go to school, for about six hours a day, 180 days a year, for about ten years, whether or not he learns anything there, whether or not he already knows it or could learn it faster or better somewhere else, is such a gross violation of civil liberties that few adults would stand for it. But the child who resists is treated as a criminal. With this requirement we created an industry, an army of people whose whole work was to tell young people what they had to learn and to try to make them learn it. Some of these people, wanting to exercise even more power over others, or to be even more "helpful," are now beginning to say, "If compulsory education is good for children, why wouldn't it be good for everyone? If it is a good thing, how can there be too much of it?" They are beginning to talk, as one man did on a nationwide TV show, about "womb-to-tomb" schooling. If hours of homework every night are good for the young, why wouldn't they be good for us all¡ªthey would keep us away from the TV set and other frivolous pursuits. Some group of experts, somewhere, would be glad to decide what we all ought to。

One day, Mrs Nanette O‟Neill gave an arithmetic 21 to our class. When the papers were 22 she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the same mistakes throughout the test. There is nothing really new about 23 in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs O‟Neill didn‟t even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to 24 after class. I was one of the twelve.Mrs O‟Neill asked no questions, and she didn‟t 25 us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the 26 words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to 27 these words into our exercise-books one hundred times.I don‟t know about the other eleven boys. Speaking for 28 I can say: it was the most important single 29 of my life. Thirty years after being 30 to Macaulay‟s words, they still seem to me the best yardstick (准绳), because they give us a 31 to measure ourselves rather than others.32 of us are asked to make 33 decisions about nations going to war. But all of us are called 34 daily to make a great many personal decisions. 35 the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket 36 turned over to the policeman? Reading Comprehension. (2 points for each, altogether 30 points) Directions: There are three passages followed by questions. Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.Passage 1When we talk about intelligence, we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school. By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving, especially in a new or upsetting situation. If we want to test intelligence, we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.For instance, when in a new situation, an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him. He tries to find out all he can, and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it. He probably isn‟t sure how it will all work out, but at least he tries. And, if he can‟t make things work out right, he doesn‟t feel ashamed that he failed; he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook on life, a special feeling about life, and knows how he fits into it.If yo u look at children, you‟ll see great difference between what we call “bright” children and “not-bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life —he tries to get in touch with everything around him. But, the unintelligent child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world; he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.41. According to this passage, intelligence is ________.[A] the ability to study well[B] the ability to do well in school[C] the ability to deal with life[D] the ability to get high scores on some tests42. In a new situation, an intelligent person ________.[A] knows more about what might happen to him[B] is sure of the result he will get[C] concentrates on what to do about the situation[D] cares more about himself43. If an intelligent person failed, he would ________.[A] try not to feel ashamed[B] learn from his experiences[C] try to regret as much as possible[D] make sure what result he would get44. Bright children and not-bright children ________.[A] are two different types of children[B] are different mainly in their degree of cleverness[C] have difference only in their way of thinking[D] have different knowledge about the world45. The author of this passage will probably continue to talk about ________.[A] how to determine what intelligence is[B] how education should be found[C] how to solve practical problems[D] how an unintelligent person should be taughtPassage 2What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or isintelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear. We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”46. The words “intelligent” and “brilliant” in the first paragraph probably mean ________ while “dull” in the second paragraph means ________.[A] bright and splendid; slow in thinking and understanding[B] pretty and handsome; ordinary-looking[C] great and important; common[D] hopeful and helpful; careless47. According to the context we can guess that a genius is ________while an idiot is________.[A] a normal person; a funny person[B] a strong person; a weak person[C] a highly intelligent person; a foolish or weak-minded person[D] a famous person; an ordinary person48. A person ________ is more likely to become a genius.[A] whose parents are clever[B] often thinking about difficult problems[C] often helped by his parents and teachers[D] born with a good brain and putting it into active use49. It is better for parents ________.[A] to praise and encourage their children more often[B] to be hard on their children[C] to leave their children alone with nothing to do[D] to give their children as much help as possible50. Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?[A] Parents play an important part in their children‟s growth.[B] The less you use your mind the duller you may become.[C] Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.[D] What makes a person bright or stupid is still under discussion.Passage 3Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there‟s a big difference between “being a writer‟ and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fam e, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. “You‟ve gotto want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer”.The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance (自由栏目) writer, I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn‟t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn‟t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write, I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn‟t going to be one of those people who die wondering: What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.51. The passage is meant to ________.[A] warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experience[B] advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer[C] show young people it‟s unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fame[D] encourage young people to pursue a writing career52. What can be concluded from the passage?[A] Genuine writers often find their work interesting and rewarding.[B] A writer‟s success depends on luck rather than on efforts.[C] Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolation.[D] The chances for writer to become successful are small53. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career?[A] He wasn‟t able to produce a single book.[B] He hadn‟t seen aching for the better.[C] He wasn‟t able to have a rest for a whole year.[D] He though that he lacked imagination.54. “…people who die wondering: What if?”(Lin e 4-5, Para-3) refers to “those ________”.[A] who think too much of the dark side of life[B] who regret giving up their career halfway[C] who think a lot without making a decision[D] who are full of imagination even upon death55. “Shadowland” in the last sentence refers to ________.[A] the wonderland one often dreams about[B] the bright future that one is looking forward to[C] the state of uncertainty before one‟s final goal is reached[D] a world that exists only in one‟s imaginationIV.

1. Let's address the question of whether speed reading is even a desirable goal. I am an avid fiction reader. Consciously or unconsciously, readers of fiction appreciate the beauty in good writing. Occasionally I will read a passage or sentence over to be impressed by the opening sentences of Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, The Dark, and Herman. If I was a determined speed reader, I would never have the time to appreciate these beautiful passages. And I'd never have the time to savor the development of a character like Rhett Butler, the Great Gatsby or Captain Ahab. Good writers must be read carefully and thoughtfully to be fully appreciated. To carry the question of the need for rapid reading a bit further, let's consider the technical or educational material most of us must read for our jobs. If you work in a technical field—and most business and professional people do—you'd better read slowly and carefully. Almost all businesses today are subject to federal regulations to some degree. If you must read the Federal Register, the Code of Federal Regulations, the OSHA Handbook or other technical materials related directly to your job, I'd urge you to take your time. A misreading could be costly or damaging to your firm. On the other hand, newspapers, news magazines and other publications should be read with some degree of speed. Here's where a general knowledge of speed reading techniques might be useful. Especially since that is the most common type of reading we do. Anyone can improve their reading efficiently. To do so, you must learn some basic techniques and then consciously apply them. Perhaps an expensive course would help you, but an inexpensive paperback and concentrated practice might provide as much long-term benefit. In any case, you lose nothing by trying the self-help approach. Question:Hemingway's writing is mentioned in the passage to show that _________.

3. I get jumpy inside when I get jealous and I find it hard to control that. At first I try to avoid it, try to pretend it's not there. Mostly that works for me; my jealous feelings are fleeting things anyway. They never last very long. I know that jealousy is real and I don't want to deny it in me, but I don't like the physical feeling it gives me. I sometimes like the feelings behind the jealousy and being made to feel jealous. It says to me that I care enough, like someone enough to be moved in that way. It means that I am still in touch with someone in a relationship and that the。
