AThe government of Norway is planning to build an unusual storage center on an island in the Arctic Ocean. The place would be large enough to hold about two million seeds. The goal is to represent all crops known to scientists. The British magazine New Scientist published details of the plan last month. The structure will be designed to protect the world’s food supply against nuclear war, climate change and other possible threats. It will be built in a mountain on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. The mountain is less than one thousand kilometers from the North Pole, the northernmost position on Earth. An international group called the Global Crop Diversity Trust is working on the project. Thedirector of the group, Cary Fowler, spoke to New Scientist. He said the project would let the world rebuild agriculture if in his words “the worst came to the worst”. Norway is expected to start work next year. The project is expected to cost three million dollars. Workers will drill deep in the side of a sandstone mountain. Temperatures in the area never rise above zero degrees Celsius. The seeds will be protected behind concrete walls a meter thick and high-security doors. The magazine report says the collection will represent the products of ten thousand years of farming. Most of the seeds at first will come from collections at seed banks in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To last a long time, seeds need to be kept in very low temperatures. Workers will not be present all the time. But they plan to replace the air inside the storage space each winter. Winter temperatures on the island are about eighteen degrees below zero Celsius. The cold weather would protect the seeds even if the air could not be replaced.Mr. Fowler says the proposed structure will be the world’s most secure gene bank. He says the plant seeds would only be used when all other seeds are gone for some reason.Norway first proposed the idea in the 1980s. But security concerns delayed the plan. At that time, the Soviet Union was permitted use of Spitsbergen. New Scientist says the plan won United Nations approval in October at a meeting in Rome of the Food and Agriculture Organization.21. The project is meant to_____.A. increase the world’s food production in the futureB. carry out some scientific experiments on plant genesC. protect crop seeds from dying out in case of possible disastersD. build an exhibition centre of the world’s plant seeds22. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the above passage?A. The government of Norway will perform the project alone.B. Seeds to be collected there were produced ten thousand years ago.C. Spitsbergen is chosen because it is away from the threat of unclear war forever.D. Temperature is a major consideration when choosing the storage place.23. We can infer from the text that_____.A. People will get newly-developed seeds from the center every yearB. The storage center will greatly promote the development of world agricultureC. Norway meant to have built the storage centre more than 20 years agoD. There haven’t been any seed storage centers in the world before24. What is probably the best title of the passage?A. Noah’s Ark of Plant Seeds in PlanB. The Best Place to Store SeedsC. Concerns of World Food SupplyD. A New Way to Feed the WorldBResearchers have just offered evidence in a study that says obesity appears to spread through social ties, much like a virus. When one person gains weight, their close friends often follow. But the finding might also offer hope.If friends help make obesity acceptable, then might also be influential in losing the fat. The researchers note that support groups are already an effective tool in dealing with other socially influenced problems, like alcoholism. The findings appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, The researchers used information collected from 12,000 people. It was collected between 1971 and 2003 as part of the Framingham Heart Study. The information was highly detailed. There was even contact information for close friends of the people in the study. The researchers examined more than 40,000 social ties. They found that a person’s chances of becoming severely overweight increased by 57% if a friend had become obese.A sister or brother of a person who became obese had a 40% increased chance of becoming obese. The risk for a wife or husband was a little less than that.Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School was a lead investigator in the study. He says there is a direct causal relationship between a person getting fat and being followed in weight gain by a friend. The study found that the sex of the friends was also an influence. In same-sex friendships a person had a 70% increased risk of becoming obese.Men had a 44% increased risk of becoming obese after weight gain in brother. In sisters, it was 67%.The researchers also considered the effect of where people lived in relation to each other. James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego, was the other lead investigator. He says a friend who lives a few hundred kilometers away has as much influence as one in the same neighborhood. He says the study demonstrates the need to consider that a major part of people’s health is tied to their social connections. Both investigators say their research shows that obesity is not just a private medical issue, buta public health problem.25. What does the underlined sentence in Para. 2 mean?A. Obesity has a negative influence on a close friend.B. Friends might also play a part in losing weight.C. One might have a positive influence on one’s friend.D. Friends usually don’t follow each other to lose weight.26. Who is mostly likely to gain weight?A. A man who has a fat brotherB. A husband who has a fat wifeC. A wife who has a fat husbandD. A woman who has a fat female friend27. Which of the following statements doesn’t the passage agree with?A. You are sure to lose weight if you have a skinny friend.B. If one gains weight, one’s friends are likely to get fat.C. A person’s health is closely linked with his /her social rel ationship.D. Even if the friend lives far away, the influence still remains.28. The reason why the study involves both family members and friends is that_______.A. researchers fail to find a more different sampleB. researchers have different ideas for family members and friendsC. researchers can meet these people regularlyD. researchers can compare the resultsCTime spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or merely go there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust jacket is irresistible, although this method of selection ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather dull book. You soon become interested in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment—without buying a book, of course. This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wan der round such places to your heart’s content. If it is a good shop,no assistant will approach you with the inevitable greeting: “Can I help you, sir?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background unt il you have finished browsing. Then and only then, are his services necessary. Of course, you may want to find out where a particular section is, but when he has led you there, the assistant should retire discreetly and look as if he is not interested in selling a single book. You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop. It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on, say ancient coins and come out carrying a copy of the latest best-selling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing-something which had only slightly interested you up till then. This volume of the subject, however, happened to be so well illustrated and the part of the text you read proved so interesting that you just had to buy it. This sort of thing can be very dangerous. Apart from running up a huge account, you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section.29. The underlined phrase “dust jacket” means_______.A. a kind of clothesB. a paper cover of bookC. a dusty bookD. a title of a book30. You may spend too much time in a bookshop because_______.A. the dust jackets are very attractiveB. you start reading one of the booksC. it is raining outsideD. you have to make sure you won’t buy a dull book as a present31. In a good bookshop_______.A. all the books there are interestingB. the assistant greets you in a warm wayC. your heart is satisfiedD. you feel that you are in a music shop32. The best title for this passage may be_____.A. The Attraction of BookshopsB. How to Spend Your TimeC. Bookshops and Their AssistantsD. How to select Books?DWindows not only let light in to cut down an electricity use for lighting, but the light coming through the window also provides heat. However, windows are not something people typically associate with being a cutting edge technology. Researchers are now working on new technologies that enable a window to quickly change from clear to dark and anywhere in between with a turn of a switch.“It took us a long time to figure out what a window really is,” says Claes Granqvist, a professor of solid-state physics at Uppsala University In Sweden. “It’s contact with the outside world. You have to have visual contact with the surrounding world to feel well,” So ,windows and natural light are important for improving the way people feel when they’re stuck indoors.Yet, windows are the weak link in a building when it comes to energy and temperature control. In the winter, cold air leaks in. When it’s hot and sun ny, sunlight streams in. All of this sunlight carries lots of heat and energy. And all of this extra heat forces people to turn on their air conditioners. Producing cold air, which can feel so refreshing, actually suck up enormous amounts of electricity in buildings around the world.Windows have been a major focus of energy research for a long time. Over the years, scientists have come up with a variety of strategies for coating, glazing, and layering windows to make them more energy efficient. Smart windows go a step further. They use some technologies involving changes of color.Electrochromic windows use electricity to change color. For example, a sheet of glass coated with thin layers of tungsten oxide works bit like a battery. Tungsten oxide is clear when an electric charge is applied and dark when the charge is removed. That is, when the amount of voltage is decreased, the window darkens until it’s completely dark after all electricity is taken away. Soapplying a voltage determines whether the window looks clear or dark. One important feature that makes a smart window so smart is that it has a sort of “memory”. All it takes is a small shock of voltage to turn the window from one state to the other. Then, it stays that way. Transitions take from 10 seconds to a few minutes, depending on the size of the window. The development of smart windows could mean that massive air conditioning systems may no longer need. “In the future,” Granqvist says, “our buildings may look different.”33. Which statement dose not indicate the importance of windows as described in the first two paragraphs?A. Windows can change from clear to dark to save energy.B. Windows help to save energy by letting light in.C. Windows help to save energy by providing heat.D. Windows enable people to have contact with the outside world.34. According to the passage, smart windows are windows.A. that are coatedB. that use electricityC. the color of which can be changedD. that have many layers35. To make electrochromic windows change color, what is applied to the window glass?A. ElectricityB. Tungsten oxideC. A batteryD. A voltage第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

One night, I took a fare (出租车乘客) at 2:30AM. When I arrived to collect, sanding on the side way was a small woman in her 80s with a big suitcase. After I helped her into the taxi she gave me an address and asked, “Could you drive through downtown?” “It is not the shortest way,” I answered quickly. “I don’t mind,” She said, “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice (临终安养院).” I looked in the rear-view mirror (后视镜). Her eyes were wet. I quietly reached over and shut off he meter (计价器). “What route would you like me to take?” I asked. For the next two hours, we drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newly married. She had me stop in front of a shabby house, where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she asked me to slow in front of a particular building and sat staring into the darkness, saying nothing. At last, she said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”We drove in silence to the destination. It was a grey low building.“How much do I owe you?” She asked, reaching into her purse. “Nothing,” I said. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held on to me tightly and whispered a “Thank you”. I squeezed her hand and walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.I didn’t pick up any more passengers, but drove aimlessly, lost in thought. What if that woman had come across an impatient driver? The relationship between a mother and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship. These characteristics include a hierarchy (等级) of responsibilities and unconditional love, which preclude mothers and daughters from being best friends.Marina, 27 years old, said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my best friend. Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they carried you in their body and gave you life! Best friend: don’t tell you how wise they are because they have been alive at least 20 years longer than you.” This doesn’t mean that the mother and daughter relationship can’t be very close and satisfying. While some adult relationships are still troubled, many find them to be extremely rewarding. This generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increases the likelihood of shared companionship. Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of being homemakers, responsible for maintaining and passing on family values and traditions. Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of the workforce and technology, which may bring them even closer together.Best friends may or may not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse, the mother and daughter relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren’t speaking. The mother and child relationship is closer than any other. There is not an equal relationship. Daughters should not feel responsible for their mother’s emotionalwell-being. It isn’t that they don’t care deeply about their mothers. It’s just that they shouldn’t be burdened with their mother’s well-being.The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other. Mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and often feeling responsible for their happiness. Mothers always “trump (胜过)” friends.9.What does the underlined word “preclude” in paragraph 1 probably mean?A.differ B.prevent C.benefit D.change 10.What do we know from the text?A.The mother and daughter relationship can be replaced by a best friend.B.A mother’s love brings her and her daughter a close friendship.C.The mother and daughter relationship goes beyond best friends’ friendship.D.Marina has a troubled relationship with her mother.11.How does the author mainly prove his statements?A.By listing data.B.By giving explanations.C.By quoting sayings.D.By giving examples.12.What is the best title for the text?A.How to Be a Good Mother and Daughter?B.Who Is a Mother’s Best Friend?C.Mothers or Friends?D.Can a Mother Be a Daughter’s Best Friend?二、七选五Tips for Discussing Current Events with ChildrenOften the news children see and hear can be confusing and alarming. Maybe you don’t let your child read or watch the news. 13 With some preparation, you can help your child to understand and react calmly to news and current events. The first thing to keep in mind is to find out what your child already knows. Your child may have already heard about an event but lack context for an understanding of the details. Ask your child questions about what news topics are being discussed in school or what stories they recently saw in the newspaper or on TV. 14Another way you can help your child understand the news is to seek outchild-appropriate news sources. Explain to your child the importance of getting news from reliable sources. There are multiple well-regarded websites that have news stories for younger children. 15 Try to watch or read the news together and encourage your child to ask questions if they see something confusing.16 If a news story upsets you, it is okay to tell your child this, showing children that having strong feelings about world events is healthy. However, you shouldn’t try to force your child to feel the same way as you. Encourage your child to read or watch the news critically and draw their own conclusions. All in all, by talking with your child about current events, you can help your child to feel more confident in their understanding of the world. 17A.Finally, be careful not to upset your child.B.Besides, be honest with your child about your feelings.C.But they can hear about events from other children at school.D.This is not likely to be an attractive option for older children.E.Then you can help them fill in gaps in their understanding of events.F.You can also help them become a better and more informed global citizen.G.Older children may want to read the same news sources that you read or watch.三、完形填空It might sound a bit old-fashioned, but there’s something unique about handwrittenThen out of the blue, he passed away. It has caused a great discussion in China and in many countries of the West. What can educators learn from each other? Forum(论坛)readers share their opinions.Ted M(UK)Students in China are raised to study for long hours, with great expectations (期望)and demands. Yet they have little social life and there is no encouragement for joy of lifelong learning. In the West, students are taught to enjoy learning, questioning, active learning and problem solving. They have a broad and balanced education, including social learning.Leonard Wong(Singapore)The Chinese language requires rote(死记硬背)learning. It seems boring, but it trains the mind to focus(关注)on what is important and good study habits. These habits offer them a lot even at a later age. More could be done to encourage children to express their opinions about the things they meet.Michael M(US)My personal belief is that the biggest advantages of Chinese secondary education are:1. Longer hours at school.2. Full of challenges.3. Students are expected higher.4. More lecture-based lessons. This is great preparation for college.TAL123(China)If I had a child, I think I’d consider Chinese education for part of their learning. I think the middle school years are a good time for them to develop strong basic skills in math, reading and memory, etc, that the Chinese system teaches well. But children need the freedom to explore, express, inquire and understand. In my view, the chief weakness in China’s system is that students usually can’t do thingsby themselves. Students do not bee good learners, they only bee good test takers.Different people have different opinions on what is right and wrong with teaching and learning. Each country has its own unique(独特的)educational culture that is a product of years, centuries of experiment and practice, and which reflects(反映)the traditional values of its society.某某省兴化市2020-2021学年八年级下学期期中考试英语试题五、任务型阅读阅读下面的材料, 根据材料内容完成表格, 每空1词, 每词1分, 共10分In the USA, there are many kinds of restaurants.Fast food restaurants are very famous. I appreciate the opportunity to spend quality time with my mom but it is painful for me to see her house littered with stuff.Clothes bought but never worn, and new items in their original packaging carelessly purchased and never used. It’s evident that seeing the stuff on a daily basis reminds my mom of a time when shopping was her way of spending money.I didn’t fully understand the extent to which my mom was suffering until this week, when I saw piles of clothes on her bed. “How do you manage to sleep every night with all that stuff, Mom?” I asked. To my horror, she replied, “I do it because I know I have to get rid of all this stuff eventually; I am punishing myself by sleeping with them until I do that. ”Shocked and upset, I gently explained to her that punishing herself was only to make things worse, and that everybody deserves a place to sleep in peace, no matter what mistakes they’ve made. I suggested she move all the stuff upstairs, leaving her room comfortable tosleep in.With patience and her slow but steady guidance, I helped her go through some of the piles and move them upstairs. For the rest of the week I stayed there, she was in a better mood and was excited about going through the rest of the house to finally get rid of her stuff—past mistakes and painful times. The items brought back painful memories as we inspected and moved them, but I kept reminding her that removing them would allow her to move on and heal. We finally sold so many things and took bag after bag to charity. The stuff is just a sign of the destructive patterns of self-hatred on past mistakes. Only through the act of self-forgiveness can we bring about a chain reaction of reorganizing—both of the house and heart.4.What made the author feel bitter?A.She couldn’t understand her mom’s sorrows.B.Her mom was stuck in the painful memories.C.Her mom was always left alone at home.D.Her mom wasted money on useless things.5.The underlined word “that” in the second paragraph refers to _______.A.getting rid of the stuff B.buying the stuffC.opening the stuff D.moving the stuff6.We can infer from the passage that ______.A.the author never bought her mom anythingB.the author’s mom has no money to purchase nowC.the author’s mom regrets buying so many thingsD.the author knows her mom’s suffering only this week7.What’s the best title of the passage?A.How to do shopping wiselyB.Clearance helps reorganize the houseC.Keep an eye on the elderly’s behaviorD.Self-forgiveness makes a differenceTrees don’t look at the calendar to see when spring arrives, but they seem to know when spring is here better than we do. The annual shift from winter to spring is a breathtaking event to watch as leaves become green and a lush(苍翠的) environment reveals itself. Recently aresearch takes a look at why trees in cities are turning green earlier than expected.Scientists use satellite imagery to see when plants turn green. By comparing spring green ups in the 85 largest US cities, scientists found that on average trees start to turn green nine days earlier in cities due to the combined effect of artificial lights and urban heat effect.According to the findings, one of the reasons is the artificial light. City lights brightening the night skies, billboard signs lit up on roadways and car headlights all contribute to shifting the regular day to night cycle that plants and trees rely on. In order to stay alive during cruel winters, trees hit the pause button on their growth. Since temperatures can vary dramatically throughout the winter, the length of daylight is the signal trees look for to safely start growing again and turn green. On average cities are typically 1.8 to 5.4F warmer than rural areas. This is known as the urban heat island effect. The changes in city environments may affect seasonal changes even more than climate warming and mosquito season, water cycles, and also affect pollinators(授粉媒介).Despite the worries and concern, it isn’t all bad news. “With a longer growing season, trees would be able to absorb more carbon dioxide,” A researcher said. “Hopefully they’d have a longer period to do the cooling effect that can help relieve the urban heating effect in cities.”8.What is the purpose of the text?A.To reveal how trees survive bitter winters.B.To warn how human activities disturb nature.C.To explain why trees turn green earlier in cities.D.To clarify how trees turning green earlier benefits cities.9.How did the scientists conduct their research?A.Bringing out urban heat island effect.B.Comparing the green-up time in sample cities.C.Allowing the city environment to reveal itself.D.Developing pictures shot by the satellite.10.Which of the following elements contributes to trees turning green earlier?A.Plant pollinators.B.Water cycle.C.Road signs.D.Street lamps.11.In which section of a website can the text be found?A.Environment.B.Education.C.Entertainment.D.Business.Experts analyzed how language can affect children’s lives and the role it plays in everyday life They also determined which languages tend to lead to the best career opportunities as an adult. “We believe that language learning is hugely beneficial for children’s development and it is a real investment for the future,” said Antonella Sorace, professor of developmental linguistics (语言学) at Edinburgh University. The study involved a survey of 2,001 parents with children under the age of 18, as well as another survey of more than 500 business leaders. So which languages took the top spot? Results indicated that children should be learning French, German, and/or Chinese if they want to be successful within the next ten years. Mastering a second language opens the door to new markets for businesses and allows them to create new relationships with potential partners. Besides being able to speak another language, the academic and interpersonal skills that can be acquired from learning a new language are important as well. “Children who are exposed to different languages become more aware of different cultures, other people, and other points of view. They also tend to be better than monolinguals (只用单语的人) at multitasking and are often more advanced readers,” said Sorace.A vast majority of parents surveyed in this study (85 percent) believe it is important for their children to learn a second language, and about one in four believe it will increase their child’s career opportunities and improve their chance of being employed. The future employment markets are in need of space tour guides, robot coaches, front-line e-commerce workers, nurses etc. No matter what a child choose to be, multilinguals and cross-culture talents will probably have a good chance to take the lead. However, 45 percent of parents surveyed admit that their child or children cannot speak a second language. If you want your child to stand out from the crowd, follow the habits of parents of successful people-give children chores, set high but realistic expectations, get yourself educated, make time for bonding, accept and recognize their feelings—and, of course, make sure they learn one of the three success languages!12.Who might be a person that took part in the survey?A.A young technician with no child.B.A farmer with a 19-year-old child.C.A librarian with a 16-year-old child.D.A middle-aged reporter with no child.13.What are the benefits of people’s mastering a second language?① Developing one’s strong will.① Improving the ability to observe things.① Acquiring academic and interpersonal skills.① Having access to new markets for businesses.① Forming new relationships with potential partners.A.①①①B.①①①C.①①①D.①①①14.How many parents surveyed believe learning a second language will increase their child’s career opportunities?A.About 500.B.About 600.C.About 700.D.About 800. 15.What is the aim of the last paragraph?A.To present some parents’ opinions.B.To offer readers some suggestions.C.To explain some concepts.D.To tell readers a story.二、七选五Being a good neighbor matters-not only because it makes life more pleasant, but also because being a good neighbor is part of being a good person.Being a good neighbor has a lot to do with respecting privacy. 16 , give neighbors a lot of space and try to sense when it’s appropriate to back off (退避).17 . Helping with physical work is one good way to establish trust. If your neighbor is going to be moving some heavy furniture, or needs help in fixing something you know your way around, offer to help out. Once you’re getting familiar, this assistance can also extend to things like house-sitting (替人看家) or collecting the mail while your neighbor is away. Eventually, the day may come when you’re asked to take care of their kids. 18 if you accept it.It should go without saying that pet owners need to care for their animals properly.19 . There are now well over 1,000 colleges and universities that don’t require SAT or ACT scores in deciding whom to admit, a number that is growing every year. 61 new study finds that scores on these tests are of little value in predicting students’ performance in college, and 62 (raise) the question: Should those tests be required at all? When a college considers test-optional admissions policies, the first 63 (react) people feel is that the college will admit less 64 (qualify) students. Actually, more students from diverse backgrounds 65 (admit) to colleges abolishing test scores and students graduate at a higher rate. 66 , some researchers question the impact the policies have had 67 schools. They argue that 68 the study is showing can’t prove test scores can be an obstacle for students. But two years’ worth of data clearly indicate that students who go into university with high test scores perform no better than 69 (they) fellow students. So the70 (add) value of test scores in predicting performance is minimal. If a college wants to do a better job serving traditionally under-served populations, test optional policies can provide a very useful tool. 第二节(共10小题,每小题1.5分,满分15分)61. On a cold, stormy winter day, an old friend invited me out for a cup of coffee. We met by his house, and as we walked down the street, we passed by a small cafe with a sign hanging on the door that read:"You're welcome in. We have suspended coffee.""Suspended coffee?" I asked my friend."What does that mean?""You've never heard of it?" my friend asked, and I.shook my head. "Follow me," he told me, and we joined the line of people standing in front of the cash register."What can I offer you today?” The cashier asked a couple of young lawyers who were looking at the menu."I think we'll take three cups of coffee,"one of them said."2 now,and 1 suspended.” The cashier nodded, as if it were an ordinary order, took payment and placed two cups of hot coffee on the counter. The two thanked him, took the two cups and left without waiting for the third. The next in line was an older couple."Same order as always?" The cashier smiled at them."Yes,thank you," replied the woman. “But please add two suspended coffees, we haven't purchased any of those for quite a while.”A few minutes later the couple received their order, and our tum to order arrived."Good morning!" said the cashier."How can I help you?""I think we'd like two cups of coffee,"my friend said."We'll drink them here.” When our order was ready, we took our cups and sat down to drink them together."Will you tell me what this is about?" I asked my friend, but he just said:"Wait and see.”Our conversation flowed, and before we noticed it,nearly two hours passed. The cafe was almost empty of people when the door suddenly opened and a man in old shabby clothes and a tired look came in and stood quietly in front of the cash register.注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;He thought for a moment and then asked quietly: “Do you have a suspended coffee?".When he saw my expression, my friend began to explain it to me.第二节(满分25分)He thought for a moment and then asked quietly: “Do you have a suspended coffee?” The cashier smiled and nodded, poured the man a cup of hot coffee and placed it in front of him. The man thanked him, took the glass and left. No one else seemed to take notice of this moment, which appeared to be ordinary in this café, but I could not help but be moved by this little gesture. However, to my puzzlement, what does a suspended coffee mean on earth? When he saw my expression, my friend began to explain it to me.“Anyone can prepay for a cup of coffee for someone less fortunate without making them feel bad. The cup of coffee waits for anyone interested in it, and who knows better than us what a warm cup of coffee can do for a cold day.” When we got up to leave, I stopped for a moment and went back to the cash register. “I just wanted to buy another cup of coffee. Suspended.”江苏省泰州市2021届高三上学期期中英语试题第二节(满分25分)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

(每小题 2 分,满分10 分)New York is one of the last large American cities to have some of its policemen on horseback. The New York police have 170 horses working in certain parts of the city. The horses are expensive to feed, but it is even more expensive to look after them. Because the horses must walk on the streets, they need special horseshoes. In fact, they need more than 8,000 of them each year. Every police horse in New York gets new shoes every month. Keeping these shoes in good repair is the job of six blacksmiths(铁匠). There are only about thirty-five of these blacksmiths in the whole United States. The cost of shoeing a horse is between twenty dollars and thirty-five dollars, and it takes a good blacksmith two or three hours to do the job.A blacksmith’s job is not an easy one. He must be able to shape a shoe from a piece of metal and then fit it to the horse’s foot. The blacksmith must bend over a ll the time when he is fitting the shoe and must hold the weight of the horse’s leg while he works. Clearly, a blacksmith must be very strong. But even more important, he must be able to deal with horses—for before the blacksmith can begin his work, he has to get the horse to lift its leg.One of the blacksmiths in New York is James Corbin. He came to the country from Ireland in 1948. He not only makes horseshoes for the police but also works for a group of horse owners near the city. Corbin became interest ed in blacksmithing because his father did it, and, as he puts it, “It’s a good way to make a living.”Answer the following questions(no more than 10 words)69.Why must a blacksmith be strong?70.What did James Corbin become a blacksmith for?71.What must the horse do before the blacksmith begin his work?72.What was James Corbin’s father’s jo b?73.How much does it cost the New York police to shoe a horse at least ?答案:69. The government of Norway is planning to build an unusual storage center on an island in the Arctic Ocean.
The
director of the group, Cary Fowler, spoke to New Scientist.
The cold weather would protect the seeds even if the air could not be replaced.
Mr. New Scientist says the plan won United Nations approval in October at a meeting in Rome of the Food and Agriculture Organization.
21. The project is meant to_____.
A. increase the world’s food production in the future
B. carry out some scientific experiments on plant genes
C. protect crop seeds from dying out in case of possible disasters
D. build an exhibition centre of the world’s plant seeds
22. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the above passage?
A. The government of Norway will perform the project alone.
B. Seeds to be collected there were produced ten thousand years ago.
C. Spitsbergen is chosen because it is away from the threat of unclear war forever.。
