The United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which fathers are honored by their children. On the third Sunday in June, fathers all across the United States are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special.
However, the idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. When you are trying to recall an email, it’s better to be always polite. Here’s a checklist of things to consider before you send.
Is the email simple?If not, it could create confusion and waste time. Edit words and sentences until the message is as tight as you can make it without losing its meaning.
Is it effective?Correspondence, particularly for business, has to be right the first time, as you may not have another chance to connect with the recipient(接受者).
Is your email necessary?We all spend too much time asking others to do things that are essentiall y frivolous. Ask yourself what would happen if you didn’t send the email. If the answer is “nothing much,” then delete it.
Do you want something done? If your email requires action, make sure you follow it up. And don’t fall into the trap of forwarding som ething just to pass the buck. Ask yourself if you are moving things forward or just moving them off your own desktop.
Dos and Don’ts
Don’t use CAPITAL LETTERS—it’s equal to shouting.
Don’t send emotionally charged messages. If you wouldn’t say it to the recipient’s face, don’t send it.
Don’t email confidential(机密的) material. It could end up in the wrong hands. Send a letter instead.
Do be specific in the subject line. Your message could get deleted if it looks like spam(垃圾邮件).
Do answer at the top, not the bottom, of an email. It’s annoying having to roll down the bottom to read a response.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are the youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressure from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try. ” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover a new meaning in competition.

In a society such as the United states or Canada, which has many national, religious, and cultural differences, people highly value individualism—the differences among people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students do not memorize information. Instead, they work individually and find answers themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.
In most Asian societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the Orient reflects society’s
belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan, and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students recite rules or information that they have memorized.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example, one advantage to the system in Japan is that students there learn much more math and science than American students learn by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.
The advantage of the educational system in North American, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school,

Four days ago, I toured Warsaw, the capital of Poland. The Nazis, the group that governed Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, discriminated against different groups of people, and invaded Warsaw in 1939. They forced the Jewish people in Warsaw to live in one small area of the city called a ghetto. There was a wall surrounding the ghetto, and the Jews could not leave. There was very little food and a lot of illness. In 1940, the Nazis started sending thousands of Jews from
Warsaw to large concentrating camps, where they were imprisoned and killed. Later, in 1943, the Jews remaining in the Warsaw Ghetto decided to fight back. During the battle, many Jews were killed, and the buildings in the Warsaw Ghetto were burnt to the ground. Now there is a memorial there to the people who fought against the Nazis. As I looked at it, I thought about how terrible life was for the Jews then and how brave they were to fight the Nazis.
After Warsaw, I visited Treblinka, one of the Nazi concentrating camps. As a memorial, there are stones representing Jewish towns and villages whose entire populations were killed during the war. There were so many stones! I could hardly speak after my visit to Treblinka.
