"Confidence" is probably one of the most noticeable traits(品质) in the Americans.
They show confidence in the way they talk, the way they smile, the way they dress and the way they walk. Living and competing with all these confident American students,I find it extremely important to be confident as an international student and instructor. As a student, being confident means you should never hesitate to raise your hand whenever a question or a point comes to your mind. Don't mind if it sounds simple or silly. Otherwise you will never get a chance to speak in class at all. What's worse, the professors may think you are not prepared for the discussion or you do not have your own opinion on the issue—this is the last comment any graduate would like to receive.
Being confident for me as a foreign instructor means calmly asking the student to repeat what he or she has said if I did not get it. Pretending to understand what you actually did not may just bring yourself embarrassment or even disgrace. But the time I most need to be confident is when my students come to my office and bargain about the grades I have given for their Speeches.(The course I'm teaching here is Public Speaking).Modesty is a trait highly valued in China, but it won’t be of much help here if you want to survive and succeed in a good American graduate program.

A. be quite confident
B. be polite and friendly
C. have more discussions with them

A. gives a silly or simple answer
B. tries to seize any chance to speak in class
C. shows no interest in the course

53. The author is most likely to feel embarrassed if .
A. he asks a student to repeat what he has said
B. the students bargain with him
C. he pretends to know what he doesn't
D. he has to give a speech
54. We learn from the second paragraph that .
A. we should also remain modest in America
B. modesty doesn't help you much in America
C. American also like modest people
D. modesty can help you through an American graduate program

Every year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii, Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for-its stadium(运动场) and theatres, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii for almost 2,000 years.
Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius,a grass- covered volcano(火山). Mount Vesuvius had not erupted(喷发) for centuries,so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.
In August of AD 79,Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on
Pompeii. When the eruption ended two day later,Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead.
For centuries,Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861,an Italian scientist named Cinseppe began to uncover Pompeii. Slowly, carefully,Cinseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20,000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom,so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too ; metal bread pans were in every bakery. In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread-a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup.
Cinseppe has died, but his work continues. One-fourth has not been uncovered yet. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii.
55. Why do a large number of people come to Pompeii each year?
A. To visit the volcano.
B. To shop and eat there.
C. To watch sports and plays.
D. To see how Pompeiians lived.
56. Why had so many people remained by volcanic Mount Vesuvius?
A. The city nearly offered all kinds of fun.
B. The area produced the finest wine in Italy.
C. Few people expected the volcano to erupt 'again.
D. The mountain was beautiful and covered with grass.
57. Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD 79?
A. Because Cinseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully.
B. Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched.
C. Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects.
D. Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted.
58. What do we know about the Pompeiians who lived about 2,000 years ago?
A. They lived more or less the same as Italians now do.
B. They liked women wearing all kinds of makeup.
C. They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating.
D. They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in AD 79.

Holding a cell phone against your ear or storing it in your pocket may be dangerous to your health. This explains a warning that cell phone manufacturers include in the small print that is often ignored, when a new phone is purchased. Apple, for example, doesn’t want iPhones to come closer to you than 1.5 centimeters; Research In Motion, BlackBerry’s manufacturer, recommends 2.5 centimeters.
If health issues arise from cell phone use, the possible effects are huge. Voice calls-Americans chat on cell phones 2.26 trillion minutes annually-earn $ 109 billion for the wireless carriets.
Devra Davisr, an expert who has worked for the University of Pittsburgh, has published a book about cell phone radiation. "Disconnect. " The book surveys scientific research and concludes the question is not settled.
Brain cancer is a concern that Ms. Davis -examines. Over all,,there has not, been an increase in,its incidence since cell phones arrived. But the average masks an increase in brain cancer in the 20-,to-29 age group and,a drop for the older population.
"Most cancers have multiple causes," she says, but she points to laboratory research that suggests lowenergy radiation' could damage cells that could possibly lead to cancer.
Children are more vulnerable(易受伤的) to radiation than adults,Ms. Davis and other scientists point out. Radiation that penetrates only five centimeters into the brain of an adult will reach much deeper into the brains of children because their skulls are thinner and their brains contain more absorbed fluid . No studies have yet been completed on cell phone radiation and children, she says.
Henry Lai, a research professor in the bioengineering department at University of Washington, began laboratory radiation studies in 1980 and found that rats exposed to radiation had damaged DNA in their brains.
Ms. Davis recommends using wired headsets or the phone's speaker. Children should text rather than call, she said; and pregnant women should keep phones away from the abdomen(腹部).
63. Why is the warning in the small print?
A. They don't want the users to pay attention to it.
B. There is not enough space for the warning.
C. They, think people will not care about it.
D. The warning is not important at all.
64. Why do children easily be affected by radiation?
A. Because they haven't grown up.
B. Because they are too young to protect themselves.
C. Because they use cell phones more often than adults.
D. Because their skulls are thinner and their brains are easily hurt.
65. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A. Pregnant women should keep, cell phones away.
B. People should use cell phones in the correct way.
C. If you are a child, you’d better text than make phone calls.
D. When you,use a cell phone,use a wired headset or the phone’s speaker.
66. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Be careful when using cell phones.
B. Don’t hold your cell phone against your ear.
C. Rats exposed to radiation have damaged DNA in their brains.
D. Low-energy radiation could damage cells that could lead to cancer.

Specialists say thai it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture. “Culture shock”is the term these specialists use when talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. There are three stages of culture shock, say the specialists. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, and everything else . In the last stage, the newcomers begin to adjust to their surroundings and, as a result, enjoy their life more.
There are some obvious factors in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be different. The public service systems-the telephone, post office, or transportation-may be difficult to work out. The most simple things seem to be big problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock? Everyone does In,this way or that. But culture shock surprises most people. Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their home countries and were successful in their community. Coming to anew country, these people find they do not have the same established positions. They find themselves without a role, almost without an identity. They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock gives rise to a feeling of disorientation(迷惘). This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves for the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of security. This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for the short term, but it does nothing to make the person fami1iar with the culture. Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience-these are the long-term solutions to the problem of culture shock.
67. When people move to a new country,they .
A. will get used to their new surroundings with difficulty
B. have well prepared for the new surroundings
C. will get used to the culture of the country quickly
D. will never be familiar with culture of the country

A. language communication
B. weather conditions and customs
C. public service systems
D. homesickness
69. According to the passage, the more successful you are at home, .
A. the fewer difficulties you may have abroad
B. the more difficulties you may have abroad
C. the more money you will earn abroad D . the less homesick you will feel abroad
70. What is the main idea of the last passage?
A. Escape unfamiliar environment.
B. The feeling of homesickness.
C. Homesickness can solve the problem of culture shock.
D. The best way to overcome culture shock: get familiar with the new culture.
