Lila 28 again.
"Even though it had broken her wing; even though you wanted to hold onto her; even though she was disabled too in a way, and we were 29 she might not make it, we still let her test her wings."
" Yes."
"And she did come back, didn't she? Not only that spring, but for several springs, and a couple of falls, too."
"But never to stay, "
"No. Never to stay, " I agreed. "And that's the 30 it is with children too, once they're grown and gone."

A black hole is a place in outer space with very strong gravity. Gravity is a great force(力量)that shapes the universe. On Earth, gravity makes apples fall from trees. It keeps your feet planted on the ground. The gravity in a black hole is much stronger. It is so strong that nothing around it can get away from it, not even light.
Black holes are invisible. We can't actually see them because they don't throw back light. But scientists can find them with space telescopes(望远镜)and special tools. The strong gravity
makes nearby stars move in a certain way. By studying how the stars move, scientists can find out if they are flying around a black hole. Strange things happen around black holes. This makes black holes a popular subject of science fiction(科幻)stories, although they are
very real.
A black hole forms when a star dies. The star falls in on itself and turns into a very small point. Because of its small size and huge mass(质量), the gravity will be so strong that it will pull light in and become a black hole. Black holes can grow huge as they continue to pull other things in and "eat" them. Many scientists believe that there are super-massive black holes at the center of galaxies, including the Milky Way.
The idea of the black hole was first suggested by two different scientists in the 18th century: John Michelle and Pierre-Simon Laplace. In 1967, a physicist named John Archibald Wheeler came up with the name "black hole". Studying black holes can tell us many things about our galaxy and help scientists answer questions about the universe.
34. The word "invisible" in Paragraph 2 probably means " __________".
A. far to go
B. easy to find
C. difficult to catch
D. impossible to see
35. The third paragraph is mainly about __________.
A. how big black holes are
B. how heavy black holes are
C. how black holes are formed
D. how black holes "eat" stars
36. From the passage we learn __________.
A. a star's moving path can help scientists find a black hole
B. writers love writing about black holes because they are real
C. there aren't any black holes at the center of the Milky Way
D. John Archibald Wheeler found the first black hole in space

"How was school today?" Ethan's mom asked as he climbed into the car.
"Fine, " Ethan answered.
"What did you do?" she tried to start a conversation.
"Nothing." Ethan answered and turned his attention to his phone.
Ethan's mom sighed(叹气). "Your grandmother and I used to have actual conversations."
"Huh?" Ethan wasn't really listening.
"Nothing, " his mother said sadly.
Ten minutes later, Ethan finally looked up from his phone. "What are we doing here?" he asked, noticing they were at an unknown supermarket.
"Grandma is coming over for dinner tonight and
we need to buy something for her favorite strawberry
cheesecake. I thought you could help me make it."
Ethan hated shopping, and he would play his
favorite video game rather than bake for a whole
afternoon. However, he knew his grandmother would
love the cheesecake, so he agreed
unwillingly(不情愿地).
Surprisingly, Ethan realized that he enjoyed shopping and he was also having fun in the kitchen helping his mom after they got home. While all of this was happening, the two actually
talked, and Ethan remembered several interesting things from school.
It was great to see his grandmother again at dinner too. The last time they met was several weeks ago, and he realized that he had a lot to tell her.
"Wow, Ethan, I don't think I've heard you speak this much in a long time, " Ethan's mom smiled.
"Well, when you were Ethan's age, Norah," Ethan's grandmother said gently to his mother, "you used to spend your whole life in your room!"
Ethan's mother turned pink; "That's not true, mom!"
"In fact," Ethan's grandmother winked(眨眼)at Ethan, " I had to get her to help me make this very cheesecake to even get her to talk to me. "
From the other side of the room, Ethan's phone rang. But Ethan realized that this conversation with his mother and grandmother was much more interesting.
37. At first, Ethan was __________when his mom asked about his school life.
A. cold
B. happy
C. nervous
D. sad
38. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Ethan had an unpleasant day at school that day.
B. Ethan expected to go shopping on his way home.
C. Ethan started real conversations with his family at last.
D. Ethan often made strawberry cheesecake with his grandma.
39. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. Using cell phones too often is not good for our health.
B. Learning to cook can help us keep in touch with friends.
C. Spending more time playing with elders can be interesting.
D. Enjoying activities together can help family members become closer.
D
You experience and create all kinds of different energies that decide how you feel and what you do in your day. The things you say, think or do all produce energy that influences(影响)you and the people around you. If you work on creating more positive energy(正能量), you'll see improvements in your life and you'll touch more lives than you thought.
Energy comes in different forms, but all lead to some kind of reaction(反应)within us. Often, when I wake up I open the curtains(窗帘)to let the sunshine into the room. This is a great way to become energized in the morning. If it's raining, instead of letting it trouble me, I will find the good in it. I will be positive about the rain and look for the beauty in it. Whatever the weather, I fully enjoy the moment. So everything is beautiful energy.
The reason why we should focus on positive energy is that it is contagious(有感染力的). When you often take in the positive energy from people around you, it will be seen in the outer world.
My good friend Alex is perhaps the best example of this. He always goes to school with a bright smile on his face. He loves being close to nature and fully understands the beauty around him. He confidently keeps working towards his goal without worrying about whether he will succeed or not. I couldn't begin to tell you how many times people have told me stories about Alex making their day, or making them smile or simply making them feel good. Everyone loves being around him and they feed off his energy.
Some people think that positive energy is not easy to have, however, it's something we create
in our day-to-day activities. If music is the easiest way for you to get energy, you can close your eyes to fully enjoy it. If being in nature is something that energizes you, try spending a little more time outdoors. When you create positive energy, it influences everything and everyone around you. In this way, we play a much larger part in the bigger picture than we realize.
40. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Positive energy depends on good weather.
B. Music is the easiest way to get positive energy.
C. The creation of positive energy helps make your life better.
D. People can't get positive energy through day-to-day activities.
41. The example of Alex in the passage is to show __________·
A. everyone needs a good friend like Alex
B. some find it difficult to enjoy the moment
C. people with positive energy can influence others
D. a person can make many friends by sharing positive energy
42. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Living a Long Life with Positive Energy
B. Creating Positive Energy for Positive Change
C. The Challenge of Making Positive Changes in Life
D. Different Kinds of Energy for Different Kinds of People

Everybody knows that soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world.
Soccer is not a new sport. People all over the world played the game in different ways long ago. For example, in China nearly 2, 000 years ago, soldiers kicked a ball as part of their exercise. Five hundred years ago in Europe, games in the street were common.
Soccer became popular in England in the 1800s. Different schools, clubs and groups played with different rules. In 1863, these English groups had meetings. They organized(组织)the different games into one game with similar rules. Soon, they formed the Football Association.
Not everyone agreed with the new rules. In England, some groups wanted to hold the ball with their hands so these groups formed rugby clubs. Groups in the United States also wanted to use their hands in the sport so they formed "football" clubs. Americans who didn't want to use their hands called the game“soccer". Soccer is a short form of the word association.
From England, soccer began to grow. The first official international game of soccer was played between Scotland and England in 1872. By the 1880s, there were professional soccer teams in several parts of Europe. English players also introduced soccer to Africa, South America and New Zealand.
Soccer soon became very popular all around the world. FIFA, the international football federation(联盟), met for the first time in 1904. Seven countries came to the meeting. The first World Cup was in Uruguay in 1930. Only 13 countries played in the Uruguayan World Cup.
The World Cup is now the most popular sporting event in the world. Over 720 million people around the world watch the final game of the World Cup.
Next time you're playing soccer with your friends, remember that you're part of a long history of a fun and exciting sport.

Last fall, many people shared social media(社交媒体)posts about scary clowns(可怕的小丑). The online posts said people dressed as clowns were waiting near schools planning to hurt students.
The clown story scared many people-but not the students in Diane Gardner's class.
Ms. Gardner teaches eighth-grade language arts. Her class did not believe the clown story.
“Some people got scared because they never looked into seeing who was posting the stories they were reading on social media,”said 13-year-old Patricia Rose from Ms. Gardner's class. "Sometimes people read just one story and automatically believed it was true,”her classmate
Ivy Brooks added.“They should look to see where the story came from. Is it from a news
group? Is it just a rumor-a circulating(流传的)story of uncertain truth?" The posts were actually not written by reporters. Many posts like these were made by
teenagers who did not have any proof(证据)of what they were posting. In the end, the
clown story turned out to be a joke. It was fake news, or news that is wrong on purpose.
There are different kinds of fake news. Some have facts with incorrect information in them.
A fact is something that can be proven true. Other fake news stories are opinions, but pretend
(伪装)to be facts. An opinion is something a person thinks. Opinions change from person to person. Fake news is a problem because it spreads(传播)wrong information.
Being able to spot(认出)fake news is an increasingly important skill today. Stories spread lightning-fast online. It is also easier than ever to share incorrect information. Almost anyone can make a website where lies look like facts.
This can make it hard to know what real news is. That is why Ms. Gardner is teaching her students to think critically(审辨地)so that they can avoid falling for fake stories.
In her class, Ms. Gardner often points out that the first step when reading news is to slow down. "Fast, stop and think," she says. "Then, ask yourself questions: Is there any proof in the story? Where is this story coming from? Did the writer have a reason to make up this story?"
Her students have also learned and practiced these things. After they read a news story, they decide if the news story has mostly facts, or mostly opinions. Then they check the facts, they do more research to see if the story is right.
To test her students, Gardner showed them a website about an animal called the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus. The website is full of information on this tree-climbing sea creature. It even has a few unclear pictures. But, just like the scary clowns, it's totally made up.
Ms. Gardner said this was a good lesson for her students. She wanted them to double-check the information they see. Her advice is simple: " _________________"
7. At the beginning of the passage, the writer mentions the clown story to __________.
A. show that students aren't scared easily
B. warn that clowns could be dangerous to students
C. suggest that stories spread online can sometimes be fake
D. prove that stories not written by reporters are made即
8. According to the passage, a good reader of news would probably __________.
A. spot opinions in stories that pretend to be facts
B. do more research to check the opinions in the story
C. avoid falling for fake stories by reading very slowly
D. believe a story that includes more facts than opinions
9. What advice might Ms. Gardner give her students?
A. Question everything.
B. Never spread fake news.
C. Act quickly, think slowly.
D. Read today, lead tomorrow.
10. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Stories that spread fast online are most likely fake news.

D. Social media has made it easier and faster to spread fake news.

My dream
Everyone has a dream. Dreams can move us forward, inspiring and guiding us to fight for what we want. My dream is to become a writer in the future.
Every time when I read a beautiful story or passage from a book, I find that my heart fills with pleasure; it is as if I'm talking to great people with brilliant ideas. From the age of seven, I decided to be a writer that can entertain and motivate others.
To make my dream come true, I have done a lot. Firstly, I have read a lot of good books because I think a great writer should be knowledgeable. Secondly, I have kept a diary for nearly ten years so that the unforgettable moments in my life will always be close to my heart and fingertips. In the future, I plan to take some courses about writing and travel to see the world. As we all know, traveling is another way to enrich our life and I believe it will be of great help as I pursue my dream.
I promise to give all of myself to realize my dream.

M: Yes, I'm going to Guizhou Province. It's very cool in the summer and not so crowded during
holidays.
W: Really? I haven't been there before. What would you like to visit in Guizhou?
M: I'll go to Huangguoshu Waterfall first.
W: I heard it's a beautiful place. What else will you do?
M: There are mountains everywhere in Guizhou. -I will go hiking in Qianling Park in Guiyang and visit Miao villages in the southeast. And I'll eat some delicious, hot food.
W: I'm sure you'll have fun, Jerry. Do you have a place to stay in Guizhou?
M: When I'm in Guiyang, the capital city, I'll stay in Guizhou Park Hotel. But I think outside Guiyang, I'll stay in a Miao village or maybe buy a tent and go camping.
W: That's great, Jerry. I'm looking forward to seeing your holiday photos.
M: I'll be sure to send you some!
Texts
Hello, everyone. I'm Jack. Today I'm going to give you some advice on how to keep your desk tidy.
First, only keep things you need on your desk.
It's important to really think carefully about what you need and what you don't. Keep useful things close by and put away the things you don't need!
Second, don't keep any drinks or food on your desk.
Drinks and food may make a mess on your books or papers. So, go to the kitchen when you want them. If you prefer, keep some drinks and snacks on a small table near your desk.
Third, make use of wall space.
Use a noticeboard on the wall. Check it every day and throw away old notes. You can also build shelves into the wall. Make sure they're the right size for the things you plan to put on them. Finally, clean your desk at the end of every day.
At the end of each day, tidy up your desk. Put the homework you have finished into your schoolbag. Throw away any trash and put other things back in the right place.
Follow these印s and make your desk a working space that can be enjoyed.
