1.The day started to go wrong the instant I left home.

(1)the instant在句中起连词作用,引导时间状语从句,表示“一……就……”。

①The instant I reached the platform, the train began to move.
我一到站台,火车就开动了。

②Please send me an e­mail the_instant you reach Yunnan.

(2)引导时间状语从句的特殊连词:
③He headed for the door immediately he heard the knock.

⑤Hardly had_the_plane_landed_when the people ran toward it.
飞机刚一着陆,人们就向它跑去。

结构中,主句用过去完成时,从句用一般过去时,且当hardly, no sooner位于句首时,主句应用倒装语序。

2.The more I looked down, the redder my face became.
我越往下看,我的脸就变得越红。

(1)“the +比较级 ...the +比较级...”句型表示“越……就越……”,其中前面的句子是状语从句,后面的句子是主句,该结构表示后者随着前者的变化而变化。

该结构中,若主句的谓语动词用一般将来时,从句的谓语动词要用一般现在时表示将来。

①The more you practise English, the better your English will be.
你练习得越多,你的英语就越好。

②The_earlier_you_start,_the sooner you will be back.
你动身越早,回来就越早。

③The less careful you are, the_more_mistakes you will make.
你越粗心,出错就越多。

(2)表示“越来越……”用“比较级+and+比较级”,如果是多音节形容词,则用“more and more+多音节形容词原级”结构。

我越来越胖了。

⑤She becomes more and more beautiful.
她变得越来越漂亮。
