What is a flood and where does it happen?
A flood occurs when water pours over dry land。

Floods can cause big damage when they happen unexpectedly。

Heavy rain can cause floods. If a lot of rain falls quickly, the earth is unable to soak (吸入) it up,and the water builds up on the ground。

When it runs off into the rivers, the rivers overflow their banks。

The worst floods happen on land that is flat and low- -lying。

These areas of land are known as flood plains (漫滩). Mud,earth, and large objects, like cars, can be carried long distances by flood waters。

Then, disease spreads quickly because the flood water is polluted.
What should I know if I live on a flood plain?
● Stay away from flood water。

It may be polluted。

● Do not walk through moving water。

It can knock you off your feet。

If you must walk through water, walk where the water is not moving. Use
a stick to test the ground in front of you。

● Stay away from power lines that are on the ground。

You could be electrocuted (电死).
● If you are scared, share your fears with an adult。

Floods can be terrible, but remember —the water ALWAYS goes away!
What dangers does a flood lead to?
● Electrocution from power lines

There was once a farmer. His land was hilly and the soil was not the best。

He had a cow that wasn’t giving much milk and he had chickens who were laying few eggs。

The place looked run-down (破败的) and the barn and fences (篱笆) needed repair。

The farmer and his wife felt dejected. One stormy evening, a poorly—dressed man knocked on their door, asking if he could get shelter for the night。

They shared the food that had been prepared, while they talked a great deal about the farm.
When the stranger left the following morning,he thanked the farmer and his wife and pulled a little bag of gold pieces out of his pocket. He said that maybe this would help them。

He added that he'd come by next year with hopes of finding a revived farm.
After this, the farmer and his wife often talked about whether they should buy a more promising cow。

Other times they considered whether they should buy chickens who laid more eggs. However, every conversation ended with the farmer trusting the farm would improve as he found himself fixing the barn and the fences, caring for the animals, preparing food for themselves and their animals.
The farmer beamed (眉开眼笑) when the stranger did come by again a year later。

Everything looked so much better。

The stranger asked,“What did you use the gold for?”
The farmer said,“We hid the gold under a kitchen tile (地砖)and, while we often thought of it,we never did think of anything we needed the gold for。

Then the farmer added thoughtfully,“I do thank you, though, ever so much。

The key to reaching or staying at a healthy weight is regular exercise and good eating habits。

Teens should get 60 minutes or more of physical
activity a day。

Note the word “activity”。

As long as you're getting your body moving,it doesn't have to mean doing complicated exercises or going to the gym every day。

All that matters is that each week you get the right balance of activity, including aerobic (有氧健身法的),strength building, and flexibility (柔韧性)exercise。

Make exercise a habit by scheduling some every day.
On days when you have soccer practice or an aerobics class, you may have no trouble exercising for an hour or more。

But most of us are busy, and 60 minutes a day of activity seems like a lot of time。

The good news is that it’s OK to divide it into shorter “exercise breaks” throughout the day。

Just as you might have a healthy snack to stop yourself getting hungry, exercise snacks can keep energy level high。

So get up 15 minutes early and do some yoga or other stretching (伸展)activity。

Fast walk or jog for 15 minutes at lunch。

Do the same thing after school — or walk or bike home。

Add to that taking the stairs, gym class, and walking between classes during the day,and you’ve probably reached your 60 minutes。

Here are 5 simple ways to make an exercise lifestyle change:
1。

Start today。

Go outside for a walk.
2。

Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
3。

Instead of driving, walk or bike to places like school or a friend’s house。

4。

Vacuum (用真空吸尘器清扫) your room, wash the car,or mow the lawn。

It’s not a chore (杂事) - it's an exercise opportunity!
5。

Limit your time watching TV,using the computer, or playing video games — and when you do play, try interactive games that get you moving。

68. The underlined phrase “exercise snacks" in the third paragraph probably means “_______"。

A. food eaten before exercise B。

food eaten during exercise C。

shorter “exercise breaks” D。

a new kind of exercise
69. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. To go hiking on your holidays。

B。

To spend less time on computer games.
C. To go to school on foot or by bike。

D。

To do some housework at home。

70. What will be most probably discussed in the following paragraph?A。

Losing weight. B。

Good eating habits。

C. Exercising your brain.
D. Outdoors exercise。

71。

What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Regular exercise B。

School exercise
C。

Indoors exercise D. Complicated exercises
(二)阅读短文,根据所读内容在文后1-8的空格里填上适当的单词或短语。

(共8分,每小题1分)Houston is home to cowboy culture, space travel, art cars and
much more.
Two brothers established Houston in 1836. Augustus and John Allen were land developers from New York State。

They purchased more than 25 square kilometers of land in a low—lying area near a small river,or bayou (河口)。

They named the town after a hero of Texas history,Sam Houston。

The brothers wanted to build a city that would become a center of government and commerce。

They succeeded。

Houston soon became a center for the cotton trade, then later the oil industry. The Port of Houston links the city to the shipping traffic in the nearby Gulf of Mexico。

The capital of the state of Texas is Austin。

But Houston for a time in its early years was the capital of the Republic of Texas。

Texas was part of Mexico until a rebellion (叛乱)by Anglo—American colonists and Mexicans living in Texas。

After that, the territory was an independent republic for almost ten years. In 1846,Texas became the twenty-eighth state in the US.
Today,Houston is the fourth largest city in the US. Two million people live there。

The area now spreads over more than 1,600 square kilometers of southeast Texas. Oil and gas explorations are still important to the Houston economy。

But other industries have also grown over the years。

One of these is the space industry。

Houston is home to the Johnson Space Center. Astronauts train there。

And it is also where the NASA space agency has its Mission
Control. Controllers direct space shuttle flights from Houston, just as they did with the old Apollo flights to the moon. Movies like Apollo Thirteen have only added to the image of Houston as “Space City”。
