With smart phones taking the world by storm, a phone that can only send and receive voice calls and text messages may seem like a relic from a past age. Yet in East Africa, simple phones like these are changing the face of the economy, thanks to the “mobile money” services that are spreading across the area. These services allow people without a bank account (账户) or credit card to use their phone as an electronic wallet that can be used to store, send or receive cash (现金).
Using the mobile money service, users have to enter a number and
password into the phone, so any money that is stored on it should be safe even if the mobile phone is lost.
There are tens of thousands of local agents in Kenya. For some the system is a lifeline. “If I didn't have my mobile phone, I would be very poor,” says Neyasse Neemur, a mother o f four children who lives in the Turkana district of northern Kenya. “Now I can sell fish.” Neemur took up fishing in July last year. She ne eded to dry her catch and sell it elsewhere. A truck from Ethiopia to Tanzania passes through her village once a week, and she had the driver take the fish several hundred kilometres south to market in Kisumu, where relatives sell the fish. “I get the money transfer (中转) immediately,” says Neemur. “Then I can pay for my children to go to school and for food. And I have bought two goats,” she adds, “so I don't need to eat fish.”
1.The author wrote this passage mainly to ________.
A. advertise the fish caught by Neyasse Neemur
B. introduce a new bank account
C. introduce new smart phones
D. introduce a new mobile service
2.What are the number and password used for?
A. Making sure the service is legal.
B. Making sure the phone won't be lost.
C. Making sure more money can be made.
D. Making sure any money stored on the phone is safe.
3.The author gives the example of Neyasse Neemur to ________.
A. tell readers people in Kenya live on fish
B. prove that for some the mobile money service is a lifeline
C. show that there are tens of thousands of local agents
D. tell readers an interesting story

Failing in something isn’t a really nice feeling, but Scotland’ s Fettes College in Edinburgh wants to show its students that failure isn’t something to fear and is actually something to accept willingly!
The boarding school held “failure week” to celebrate taking risks and learning from them. Whether in sports or school, children often face lots of pressure to succeed and do well, and the school was becoming concerned.
“Young people from all walks of life live in a high-pressure environment where they are trying very hard to achieve a level of perfection,” said Sue Bruce, head of personal and social education in the school.
“This week at Fettes we have been focusing on one of the most misunderstood parts of success: failure. While we are often scared of failure, it is important to learn that it is only through failing, often many times, that we learn how to succeed. All through the week, we have looked at the experiences of some of the most successful inventors, artists and businessmen, who failed hundreds, if not
t housands of times on their journey to success,” read a letter on Fettes College’s website.
To celebrate failure, students were encouraged to try something they’ve never done before, like playing an instrument or dancing in front of audiences. A number of students stepped up and tried things that they finally failed in, but they had fun and enjoyed the experience. “The concert was extremely enjoyable, proving that we should always try not to worry about failure and have a go!” read another note on the website. Students were also taught about famous people like J.K. Rowling and Richard Branson who failed many times before they finished what they set out to do.
“If they let the fear of failure stop them from doing something, they are actually stopping themselves from learning, developing, and
potentially succeeding,” said Bruce.
4. What is the purpose of the boarding school to hold “failure week”?
A. To help the students accept and learn from failure.
B. To teach the students how to get relaxed.
C. To get the students involved in social activities.
D. To make the students study even harder.
5. During the “failure week” the students could do the following things EXCEPT ___________.
A. learning from others’ experiences
B. trying to entertain themselves
C. taking risks
D. trying something new
6. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The students who failed in trying new things felt depressed.
B. The fear of failure can stop the students from learning and succeeding.
C. Because we are often scared of failure ,we never succeed.
D. Many successful people are lucky and achieve success easily.
C
Humans have been keeping animals as pets for tens of thousands of years, but Dr Jean-Loup Rault, an animal scientist at the University of Melbourne in Australia, believes new companions are coming: robot pets.
“Technology is moving very fast,” Rault told ABC News, “The Tamagotchi in the early 1990s was really the first robotic pet, and now Sony and other big companies have improved them a lot.”
This may not sit well with pet lovers. After all, who would choose a plastic toy over a lovely puppy? But Rault argues that the robotic kind has a lot going for it: “You don’t have to feed it, you don’t have to walk it, it won’t make a mess in your house, and you can go on a holiday without feeling guilty.” The technology also benefits those who are allergic to pets, short on space, or fearful of real animals.
It’s not clear whether robot pets can replace real ones. But studies do suggest that we can bond(建立关系) with these smart machines. People give their cars names and kids give their toy animals life stories. It’s the same with robots. When Sony stopped its repair service for its robot dog Aibo in March 2014, owners in Japan held funerals.
As an animal welfare researcher, Rault is concerned about how robotic pets could affect our attitudes towards live animals. “If we become used to a robotic companion that doesn’t need food, water or exercises, perhaps it will change how humans care about other living beings,” he said.
So are dogs and cats a thing of the past, as Rault predicts? For those who grew up with living and breathing pets, the mechanical kind might not do. But for our next generation who are in constant touch with
smart technology, a future in which lovely pets needn’t have a heartbeat might not be a far-fetched dream.
7. What does the unde rlined phrase “sit well with” means?
A. be refused by
B. receive support from
C. make a difference to
D. be beneficial to
8. What are the advantage s of robot pets?
a. They are plastic and feel smooth.
b. Owners needn’t worry about them when going out.
c. They can help cure allergies.
d. They save space and costs.
A. ab
B. bd
C. bc
D.cd
9. We can learn from the passage that___________.
A. Sony is the first company to produce robot pets Aibo.
B. Rault thinks robot pets still have a long way to go.
C. People can develop strong bond with their robot pets.
D. Robot toys may help people care more about living beings.
10. The passage mainly tells us___________.
A. the advantages of robot toys
B. robot pets are coming
C. living pets are dying out
D. the popularity of robot pets

Ways of Loving Your Parents
Even though you think that your parents are mean—spirited at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of
life. 11 And they are in part a source of who you are. Here are some ways to love your parents.
Tell them you love them every morning. A gentle “good morning” and “I love you” will warm a coldes t heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Without your parents, you might still wander at a unknown corner in an unknown world.
Respect them more and cherish these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them when you’re off on your own. It’s OK to get angry but angry actions don’t help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, write down your feelings, or talk to a friend. 12 Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don’t get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it’s cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings and make mistakes. 13 Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents!
14 Do things with your parents like watching TV, or going somewhere with them. Anyway, spend as much time with them as you can. Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find they are your teachers in this way or another.
Some people simply may not be able to love their
parents. 15 Seek help if you are being abused in any way. Parents do not have a right to harm you.
A. Keep them company.
B. Forgiveness is the key.
C. Please remember parents are as important as friends.
D. Parents will in turn express their love to you.
E. You love them for the fact that they created you, rai sed you.
F. There can be realistic reasons for this, family violenc e for example.
G. After this, share your feelings with your parents.

Dear Mike,
Thank you for your letter asking about the General Technology, a new course that we are taking at school. Here is something about it.
The new course aims to teach us students basic technical skills and improve our designing ability. From the course, I have learned to use various types of common tools safely. I can even repair some things that a re broken in my house and community. What’s more, I can design and make an item that is useful in our daily life. We also have to attend a written test for the course before graduation.
In my opinion, we will benefit from such a practical course and we will acquire more knowledge in an interesting way. We enjoy it mainly because the course is closely related to our everyday life.
