21.(6分)Information about Special Educational Needs
Learn what to do if you think your child has Special Educational Needs (SEN).
What Special Educational Needs?
Special Educational Needs is a legal term. It describes the needs of child who has a difficulty or disability which makes learning harder for them than for other children their age.
What if I think my child has SEN?
You know your child better than anyone else. If your child is pro-school, don’t wait for their next routine health check:—visit your GP (全科医生) and ask for their opinion. If your child is already in school (including nursery), talk to their teacher. Ask also to speak to the sch ool’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), who organizes extra help for children with SEN.
What will the school do?
Schools are required by law to provide an education for all pupils, regardless of their ability or special needs. Every child’s e ducation is equally important. If the SENCO and your child’s teacher agree that your child has SEN, the school will probably take a “graduated approach”—this means
“step-by-step”. They will offer your child extra support, with the possibility of more support if needed.
1、We can see that children with SEN ________.
A.have difficulty in coping with disability of various kinds
B.are not as good at learning as ot her children in one family
C.are not able to learn like normal ones in equal conditions
D.have below-average intellectual ability just at school age
2、If a child with SEN has special difficulty in learning, he/she might ________.
A.receive one-to-one teaching B.skip what is beyond him/her C.graduate like others as usual D.get assistance from his/her GP 22.(8分) A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women’s shoes.
Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 4 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.
A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy’s, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company’s co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women’s feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe’s outer part, called the sole (鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.
Rothy’s shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We’re not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I thi nk that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled materials to make other products.
For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.
1、How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with?
A.They are buried or burned.
B.They are used to make shoes.
C.They are changed into soft materials.
D.They arc returned to factories for reuse.
2、What does the underlined word knitted in the third paragraph mean?
A.Attached. B.Fixed.
C.Combined. D.Repaired.
3、Which of the following directly helped to increase the sales of Rothy’s shoes? A.The design and color. B.The reasonable price.
C.The company’s advertisement.D.The star power of Gwyneth Paltrow.
4、What is the purpose of the text?
A.To advertise a new kind of shoes.
B.To describe the process of making shoes.
C.To introduce a new way of recycling plastic waste.
D.To stress the importance of environmental protection.
23.(8分)Confidence Comes From Treating Others As Equals
There's been recent discussion over Chinese attitudes toward foreigners, caused by another quarrel between a foreigner and a taxi driver.According to the studies described in the Oxford Handbook of Chinese Psychology,Chinese have lower self﹣confidence compared to Westerners.Yet does the result still apply to the Chinese people today?
Yes and no.For the moment, different attitudes toward foreigners can still be found in China's society, with some displaying low self﹣confidence like "Foreigners are awesome (令人敬畏的),and Western countries are awesome. We should respect them and be as polite as possible, and shouldn't let them look down on us," and a few unfriendly opinions such as "Some foreigners are rude and disrespectful, and their level of civility (礼貌)is far behind China."
Chinese used to be lacking in self﹣confidence. It might start from the modern history, after the failure in the Opium wars, and the following humiliation (耻辱)of being bullied (被欺负)and brought to their knees by Western guns. And the dark history is still to some extent affecting our mentality (心态)today. For some time, the Western world represents the best of everything in some Chinese eyes. But our state of mind is gradually changing. When asked "What makes you feel proud of your country?" in school classes in China, answers vary from the World Expo to the Olympic Games, from athletes to astronauts, from the mushrooming skyscrapers to busy metropolises, which have all filled us with growing self﹣confidence.
While answering the question "Since China is so good today and Chinese people are more confident, why are an increasing number of Chinese emigrating abroad?" Zhang Weiwei,a professor at Fudan University, replied that at least 70 percent of Chinese migrants (移民)become more patriotic (爱国的)after leaving their home country,no matter whether they have become a naturalized citizen of another nation or not.Such result and experiences are much more convincing and have better effect than dozens of "patriotic education" classes.
There is no reason for us not to be self﹣confident. We live in the world's second﹣largest economy.Chinese net financial assets per capita (人均纯金融资产)and the purchasing power of people have seen a sharp rise, with more and more people starting to purchase works of art, instead of only necessities. These all indicate a rising standard of life and self﹣confidence.
Nevertheless, the point of the changing attitudes toward ourselves or other countries is not realizing other nations are better or worse than China, but treating them like how we treat our fellow Chinese. That is what confidence means, not being condescending (屈尊),not worshiping, but looking each other in the eye with trust and respect.
1、According to the text, what are the Chinese attitudes toward foreigners today?A.They have various attitudes toward foreigners.
B.They think the foreigners are always rude.
C.They always speak highly of the foreigners.
D.They believe foreigners are just common people.
2、Chinese used to lack self﹣confidence because.
A.They thought the foreigners were mysterious.
B.They used to think themselves less powerful.
C.They were deeply influenced by the dark history.
D.They once believed foreigners were awesome.
3、According to Zhang Weiwei, most Chinese migrants.
A.desire to be a citizen of another nation
B.develop a stronger love for their home country
C.are unwilling to return to their motherland
D.serve as bad examples in patriotic education
4、What's the main idea of the passage?
A.Chinese should be proud of the great achievement of their country.
B.Chinese have enough confidence to make greater progress.
C.Chinese have a lower self﹣confidence faced with foreigners.
D.Chinese should be confident and take the foreigners as equals.
24.(8分)Due to light pollution present everywhere—glare from too much misaimed night lighting—80% of Europe and North America no longer experiences real darkness. For anyone living near a major metropolis, a satellite image of the Milky Way (银河) seems abstract; We understand it to be a document of something true, but our understanding is purely theoretical. In 1994, after a pre-dawn earthquake cut power to most of Los Angeles, the Griffith Observatory received phone calls from frightened local people asking about “the strange sky”. What those callers were seeing were stars. Darkness is a complicated thing to measure. In 2001, the amateur astronomer John Bortle designed a scale to help. His classification range from “inner-city sky” (class 9), in which the only “pleas ing views seen through a telescope are the moon, the planets, and a few of the brightest star clusters (团)”, to a sky so dark “the Milky Way casts obvious shadows on the ground” (class 1). Most North Americans and Europeans live under class 6 or 7 skies, in which the Milky Way is undetectable. In that kind of night, a person can wander outside, unfold a garden chair, open a newspaper, and read the headlines, if not the stories.
In addition to the Bortle scale, scientists often use photodiode light sensors (传感器)to measure and compare base levels of darkness. Unihedron’s Sky Qua1ity Meter is the most popular instrument for this kind of work, partly because it is small enough to fit into your pocket and also because it connects to an online global database. According to that database, Cherry Springs State Park—an 82-acre park in remote rural Pennsylvania—presently has the second darkest score listed.
Cherry Springs is located less than 300 miles inland from the US eastern seaboard, in a region—the East Coast—that contains 36% of the total US population and is lit up every night like a backstage makeup mirror. When pinpointed on a satellite image, Cherry Springs is in the middle of an uncharacteristically dark area—insulated (隔离), on all sides, by hundreds of thousands of acres of protected forest and sitting on top of the Allegheny Plateau, 700 metres above sea level. Most of the small towns surrounding
the park are situated in valleys where outdoor light is already failing. This unusual combination of factors explains, to a certain degree, how Cherry Springs became one of the darkest places in America.
1、What did the phone calls the Griffith Observatory received reveal?
A.The callers were in great fear of the severe earthquake.
B.People believed that stars would bring them misfortune.
C.People needed help and com fort in face of a big disaster.
D.Darkness had been away from the local people for ages.
2、Which classification of darkness does the writer seem to like best?
A.Class 1. B.Class 3. C.Class 7. D.Class 9.
3、It can be concluded from the passage that ________.
A.light from heavenly bodies is much weaker
B.light pollution exists mainly in urban areas
C.human eyesight is getting from bad to worse
D.light pollution has bud influence on us anytime
4、Cherry Springs is one of the darkest places in America partly because of ________. A.its specific location B.its limit on the use of lights
C.its natural surroundings D.its small native population
25.(10分)Alvin Irby wears many hats. He is a stand-up comedian, a children’s book author, a former kindergarten teacher and, above all, the founder of the nonprofit Barbershop Books.
Barbershop Books tries to solve this problem: How to get black children excited about reading? Its solution: 15 books. Barbershop Books puts 15 books —all picked by kids — in each of the dozens of barbershops, mostly in black neighborhoods, across the country.
Irby, who just turned 33, says he’s hoping to help black children identify themselves as readers. That means, first and foremost, that reading should be fun. It also means kids need to see their life and interests reflected in the stories they read.
But, Irby says, the publishing industry has a long way to go. When he went to a big book exhibition recently, few of the kids, titles on display had diverse characters. And those that did felt both foreign and not fun. The books’ subjects were mainly slavery, civil rights, or old dead black person. The librarians he met could hardly name two
laugh-out-loud picture books with a black protagonist (主角).
Books about slavery and civil rights have their place, Irby believes, but little black boys and girls deserve books that allow them to be children and to laugh like children.
Irby says, schools need to focus less on out-of-touch books and reading tests that leave kids feeling defeated. They should try listening more and ask students: What are your strengths, your experiences, your interests? What’s most important to you?
In Levels Barbershop of New York, what’s most important to Vincent, a
sixth-grader and son of a barber, is Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the book Irby just replaced, because the hero’s story feels real — and really funny.
“Everything goes wrong when he thinks that it’s gonna go right,” Vincent says. “Or, when something good’s about to happen, it just gets ruined by his brother, Roderick.”
Vincent’s enthusiasm —he says he’s read every last one of the shop’s 15 books — is all the motivation Alvin Irby needs to keep growing Barbershop Books. And it is growing.
Last year, the program won a $10,000 Innovations in Reading Prize from the National Book Foundation. And next month, Irby will host a New York City fundraiser...
