21.(6分)Researchers have found bees can do basic mathematics, in a discovery that deepens our understanding of the relationship between brain size and brain power. Recently, A study conducted by researchers from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia showed that bees could perform arithmetic operations like addition and
subtraction (减法).
Solving math problems requires a complex level of involving the mental management of numbers, long-term rules and short-term working memory. The finding that even the tiny brain of a honeybee can grasp basic mathematical operations has a possible effect on the future development of Artificial Intelligence, particularly in improving rapid learning.
RMIT’s Professor Adrian Dyer said numerical (数字的) operations like addition and subtraction are complex because they require two levels of processing. “You need to be able to hold the rules ar ound adding and subtracting in your long-term memory, while mentally using skillfully a set of given numbers in your short-term memory,” Dyer said. “On top of this, our bees also used their short-term memories to solve arithmetic problems, as they learned to recognize plus or minus as abstract concepts.”
The findings suggest that advanced numerical cognition (认知) may be found much more widely in nature among non-human animals than previously suspected.
“If math doesn’t require a massive brain, there might a lso be new ways for us to include interactions of both
long-term rules and working memory in designs to improve rapid AI learning of new problems,” said Dyer.
Many species can understand the difference between quantities and use this to search for food, make decisions and solve problems. But numerical cognition, such as exact number and arithmetic operations, requires a more complex level of processing.
Previous studies have shown some primates (灵长目动物), birds, babies and even spiders can add and/or subtract. The new research, published in Science Advances, adds bees to that list.
1、What have the researchers from RMIT University discovered?
A.The relationship between brain size and brain power.
B.Long-term rules and short term working memory.
C.Bees can perform complex arithmetic operations.
D.Bees can do basic mathematics.
2、According to Adrian Dyer, bees’ numerical cognition ________.
A.requires addition and subtraction two complex processing
B.has a possible effect on the future development of AI
C.only involves their short-term working memory
D.calls for a lot of maths knowledge
3、What does the finding of the new research suggest?
A.Bees can recogize the exact number.
B.Arithmetic operations exist in human and bees. C.Numerical cognition has been found in many more species. D.Some primates, birds and even spiders can add and substract.
4、What can be the best title for the text?
A.A Discovery About the Tiny Brain of Bees
B.New Findings About Bees Having Numerical Cogintion C.Numerical Cognition Requires a Complex Level of Processing D.The Relationship Between Brain Size and Brain Power 22.(8分)

23.(8分)He was the man who inspired the Beat Generation, and nearly half a century after his death Jack Kerouac is still receiving grateful letters from his fans.
Most letters are sent in the post to his last home in St Petersburg, Florida, and the mail box in the front yard is full to bursting. But others are delivered by hand, pushed under the front door or left on the doorstep.
They usually thank the author of On the Road for inspiring them to travel and be independent. “You remind me to stay true to who you are and to encourage a sense of adventure in all of us.” reads one letter, handwritten by “Cindy” on paper covered with pictures of butterflies and flowers. She adds, “I hope you’re writing, liberated and drinking a g lass of wine.”
Another, signed “Friend of Jack”, reads, “I prefer to think of myself as a free spirit and a person who follows a path of her own choosing. You have always been my inspiration.”
His home, where he was living with his mother Gabrielle and his wife Stella, has become a destination for hundreds of fans every year.
Kerouac rocketed to fame at the age of 35, with the publication of On the Road in 1957.
But after becoming a symbol and leader of the alternative lifestyle movement, he struggled with that fame and claimed that he only wanted people to read his books.
Kerouac died just 12 years after On the Road was published. He was suffering from liver problem, following years of heavy drinking largely brought on by his love-hate relationship with fame.
Kerouac, the creator of vivid characters such as Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, died at a St Petersburg hospital in 1969, at the age of 47.
1、Why do people still write to Kerouac after his death?
A.His wife and mother still live in his home.
B.They are also suffering from serious illness.
C.People benefiting from his books want to say thanks.
D.People hope to learn how to deal with overnight fame.
2、What is On the Road probably about?
A.How to deal with becoming famous.
B.How vivid characters can be created.
C.Teaching people to appreciate his books.
D.Getting to know oneself better through travel.
3、What can we learn about Kerouac from the text?
A.He had great difficulty dealing with fame.
B.He was depressed because people didn’t read his books.
C.He drank a lot to celebrate his being famous for his works.
D.He was scolded because he promoted an alternative lifestyle.
24.(8分)Spring is coming, and it is time for those about to graduate to look for jobs. Competition is tough, so job seekers must carefully consider their personal choices. Whatever we are wearing, our family and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not.
A high school newspaper editor said it is unfair for companies to discourage visible tattoos (纹身), nose rings, or certain dress s tyles. It is true you can’t judge a book by its cover, yet people do “cover” themselves in order to convey certain messages. What we wear, including tattoos and nose rings, is an expression of who we are. Just as people convey messages about themselves with their appearances, so do companies. Dress standards exist in the business world for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often about what customers accept.
Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom, but for businesses it is more about whether to make or lose money. Most employers do care about the personal appearances of their employees, because those people represent the companies to their customers.
As a hiring manager I am paid to choose the people who would make the best impression on our customers. There are plenty of well-qualified candidates, so it is not wrong to reject someone who might disappoint my customers. Even though I am open-minded, I can’t expect all our customers are.
There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choices does not match that of your preferred employer. No company should have to change to satisfy a candidate simply because he or she is unwilling to respect its standards, as long as its standards are legal.
1、Which of the following is the new spaper editor’s opinion according to Paragraph 2?
A.People’s appearances carry message about themselves.
B.Customers’ choices influence dress standards in companies.
C.Candidates with tattoos or nose rings should be fairly-treated
D.Strange dress styles should not be encouraged in the workplace
2、What can be inferred from the text?
A.Candidates have to wear what companies prefer for an interview.
B.What to wear is not a matter of personal choice for companies
C.Companies sometimes have to change to respect their candidates.
D.Hiring managers make the best impression on their candidates.
3、Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Employees Matter B.Personal Choices Matter
C.Appearances Matter D.Hiring Managers Matter
4、The author’s attit ude towards strange dress styles in the workplace may best be described as . A.enthusiastic B.negative
C.positive D.sympathetic
25.(10分)On a February day during an unusually mild winter, I found myself missing the snowy beauty. I enjoyed the feeling that comes from watching snow fall gently from heaven while I’m cosy inside with a good fire burning in the stove. But there were more serious concerns, like the lack of rainfall making our woods more accessible to summer forest fires. Local ski fields and hotels, all dependent on a snowy season, felt sorry for the vacant lifts, empty restaurants and unused snowmobiles. Then I happened to see three little robins (知更鸟) fly into our yard. What were they doing here? West of us, in the Willamette Valley, wild flowers burst this time of year. But here in central Oregon, even if a groundhog (土拨鼠)had wanted to appear, it couldn’t have broken through the frozen earth. And yet, these robins had arrived.
Their presence brought me a flow of happiness. It felt like a celebration as I dug into my bag of birdseed and spread a handful on the ground. Above me, the deep blue sky was cloudless, perfectly quiet but for some smoke from a neighbor’s chimney. The lively cold made the air fresh and clean.
My robins jumped lightly toward the seed. My soul jumped with them, feeling equally carefree.
Caught up in the moment of spring fever, I checked out snowless flower beds. To my delight, I spotted a green branch sticking out through the brown soil. Despite the cold, it wasn’t ready to go back inside. Just a short meeting with those robins had renewed my spirit. The next day I would return to my outdoor work with a cheerful heart and a hopeful eye for these signs of spring.
