NEW CONCEPTS
1. Writing Christmas cards!
Point out the new expressions in this part of the lesson:
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Tomorrow we are going to buy Christmas gifts.
Put the new expressions on the board.
Say each expression as you point to it. Remember to finger track for the students.
Ask the students to say each expression after you.
Ask the students to listen to the audiotape and read along with the tape.
Walk around listening to them as they do this and offering help where necessary.
DEMONSTRATE
Take out the Christmas chart and have the students read it together.
Add the new vocabulary to the Christmas chart.
Ask 2 students to read the story in Parts-1 for Jenny and Li Ming.
PRACTICE
Partner Work
Ask the students to read the story with a partner in parts.
Group Work
In group of 4, students write and decorate an LEA (Language Experience Approach) story together. The students have written LEA stories before in earlier Learning English books but review the process with them to ensure that they understand what is you want them to do. In this LEA story, the group will talk about what they have learned so far about Christmas and what they like about this holiday.
Group should illustrate their LEA story.
When all of the groups are done, groups can do a Gallery Walk. One student from each group should be left behind to read the story to the other groups.
Post the stories on the wall so that the students can reread them again at the beginning of the next class during a real Gallery Walk!
2. Let’s sing!
Song: We wish you a Merry Christmas!
Tell students that the song is very simple.
There are really only two lines in the song because the first three lines are the same.
Explain the word wish to the students. This is the only new word in the song.
Play the song and ask the students to clap with the beat.
We wish you a Merry Christmas.
We wish you a Merry Christmas.
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
And a Happy New Year!
Play the song and ask the students to stand up and sing with the audiotape.
3. Let’s do it!
Write a Christmas card to your friend.
Students make/write a Christmas card to give to a friend in the class.
CLASS CLOSING
As your students leave, each must tell you their favourite thing about Christmas. After-Class Activities
Students can sing the new Christmas song to their parents that evening!
Pass out small cards to the students.
Students should each make 1 picture card that is labeled an item they would like for Christmas and bring it to class.。
