The Christmas Gift
When I was a boy of nine, I used to help Mrs. Magie, a fifth-grade teacher of arts who lived across my home. She paid me very little for the help, since she had not much money.
But she did promise me, "When Christmas comes, I shall have a present for you."
I spent much time wondering what it would be.
The boys I played with had baseball gloves and bicycles and ice skates, and I was so eager to get any one of those that I convinced myself that Mrs. Magie would choose from among them.
"It would hardly be ice skates," I reasoned with myself. "A woman like Mrs. Magie wouldn't know much about ice skates."
I also ruled out the bicycle because she could not afford it.
On my last day at work, Mrs. Magie said, "You've been a good boy. At Christmas I'll make a present for you. Please come to the door and collect it."
Since she was going to have the present in her house, and since she herself would be making it, unquestionably she was giving me a pair of baseball gloves. I became so sure of this that I could imagine myself playing baseball with my friends in those gloves.
On December 23 I could wait no longer and presented myself at the door of Mrs. Magie's house and said, "I've come for my present, Mrs. Magie."
"I've been waiting for you," she said, leading me into her house. She sat me in a chair, disappeared to another room, and in a moment stood before me holding a package which under no circumstances could hold a baseball glove or a bicycle or even a pair of skates.
I took it from her hand and found it was extremely light.
"What is it?" I asked.
"A kind of magic. You cannot open it until you are home," Mrs. Magie said, and that was all.
Paragraph 1:
Her words were enough to set my mind dancing with wild possibilities.
________
Paragraph 2:
It was not until some years later that realized that the present had cost Mrs. Magie nothing. ________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Her words were enough to set my mind dancing with wild possibilities. No sooner had I got home than I opened it. To my surprise. inside the package were some books with a note which said, "These will be your fortune. my dear boy. In spite the fact that I couldn't dislike reading any more, I chose one of
them to read owing to Mrs. Magie's words. I think you have known what happened
afterwards. Yes. I soon found delight in reading and book became
an important part in my life.
Paragraph 2:
It was not until some years later that realized that the present had cost Mrs. Magie nothing. those books were gifts from her father when she was a little girl. But they did have magic, which made a difference in my lite. Many years later, when my nine-year old son asked me for Christmas gifts, I gave him the books and the note from Mrs. Magie, which I had kept carefully for many years, and then told him the story. I believed that this would change a boy's opinion to reading just as it did in my case.

We were bathed in the sunshine of weekend when an adventurous idea hit me, to go to Panisha Island for a brand new weekend with my brother Jack! Actually, Jack was a good partner, quick-minded and no-panic in trouble.
An adventure waited for us ahead. It was only a little after 12:00 o'clock and it couldn't hurt to go on a little exploration time. Could it?
We didn't want to play games at home anyway so I asked Mum, "Can we go to Panisha Island to explore?"
"Oh alright! I guess it's only a short boat ride away. Be back by 5:00
o'clock!" Mum answered us.
Thanked Mum and got on our blue bike. We got to the pier(码头)and bought a two-way ticket to Panisha and back. The sea air blew on our face like silk. I stared out into the sea. I must have stared for a while because soon I heard, "PANISHA ISLAND!".
The moment we got off the boat, we were fascinated with everything around, the clear water, the blue skies, the singing of the birds...but we had no time to appreciate these. We impatiently rushed to what was called Tiger Jungle, surrounded by vast expanses of jungle with various puzzles and traps waiting for us to explore. Lizards, birds, and lots and lots of bugs...Suddenly a rabbit sprung out, staring at us, as if to ask us where we were from. Bees and spiders were also annoying lo unprepared us. Seeing a snake winding its way
in the bushes farther, I let out a scream! Jack smiled slyly(顽皮地)and commanded me to be calm.
A tough passageway led us to natural pools, shallow waters with fishing spots, overgrown bushes and even a plane crash site. "Why not catch some fish here?" I excitedly suggested. Jack was hesitating when a roar(吼叫), like a true tiger, came out from the farther jungle! Jack thought hard and decided to get back quickly.

Suddenly I missed a step and fell into the pool. ______
There was not much time left for the return trip. ______
【答案】
Suddenly I missed a step and fell into the pool. I was extremely scared, struggling in the water. Seeing what had happened, Jack swiftly reached out his right hand, but unfortunately beyond my reach. Then he immediately picked up a stick from behind and gave the other end to me. However, the bank of the pool was too slippery and I was too scared to move. "Calm down! Grab at it firmly!" Jack encouraged in a loud voice. With his help and all my strength, I successfully got out.
There was not much time left for the return trip. Afraid of missing the boat back, Jack dragged me to the pier in a hurry. Meanwhile, I was looking back once in a while for fear that a beast might catch us up. We managed to catch the return boat finally but I had not yet got over the scare. Frightened and tired as I was, I congratulated myself on returning safe and sound. My brother and I harvested a meaningful exploration and really spent a brand new weekend.

It was a cool evening in spring. I was just finishing the dinner dishes when the phone rang. It was unusual because our landline seldom rang. Nearly everyone we knew contacted us on our cell phones.
"This is Janet Rhodes." said a familiar voice that I struggled to place. That name seemed familiar, too. I knew a lot of people, having lived on two coasts and in most major cities in California for the past thirty years.
"I am calling because I need to apologize to you," Janet stated. That's when I suddenly realized who she was.
"That day when I came into your classroom and chewed you out for disciplining my daughter, I was way out of line. I know now that you were doing what was best for her. You were right."
Twenty years earlier, it was only my second year of teaching. Janet's daughter, Stephanie, had acted out toward some of the other girls in the classroom, and I had made her stay in from breaks between classes. I was kind and fair when I punished her. The truth is that I really liked Stephanie, but she clearly didn't like being disciplined. She told her mother, and Janet felt the need to defend her child.
After school, she flew into my classroom and accused me of everything from being unfair to playing favorites to not caring about my students. She was yelling so loudly that every teacher in the building heard her accusations, including my principal.
Her words shocked me because none of her criticisms was true. I managed to keep from crying while she stood in front of me, but as soon as she left the room, I broke down. I cried all evening on and off through that sleepless night. I had once felt such joy teaching my kids, but now I felt like I was under a microscope in my classroom. For the next few weeks, her words caused me to second-guess everything I did with my students. I doubted my ability and even my own heart. Despite how her mother had treated me, I knew I would discipline Stephanie again if she acted out. It was the right thing to do.

And now, two decades later, the angry mother was apologizing to me.
________
"Can you find it in your heart to forgive me?" Janet asked finally. ________ 【答案】
And now, two decades later, the angry mother was apologizing to me. The hurtful thing had become ancient history to me, though her accusations affected me too deeply for much too long. I've now learned to process criticisms much more quickly, accepting what's true, dismissing what's not, and moving on with my mission in life. So, in essence, her apology wasn't necessary for my wellbeing because I had done the work of restoration on my own. I was grateful for that. On the other hand, how much courage this lady had to make this call! It moved me.
"Can you find it in your heart to forgive me?" Janet asked finally. I responded that she was a hero to me. After all these years, she could have just forgotten about that. But she went to such effort to make things right. I was both blessed and impressed. We spent the rest of our short conversation about Stephanie before we hung up. As I reflect on that evening, I am still in awe at Janet's growth, courage, and determination to apologize for the hurt she caused so many years ago. Her apology truly was an unexpected blessing.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.
One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain(排出)the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time lying flat on his back. The two men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement(参与)in the military service, where they had been on vacation. Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.
The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods when his world would be broadened and excited by all the activities and colors of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans(鹅)played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm among flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.
As the man by the window described all this in detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.
One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade(列队)passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band, he could see it in
his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window figured it with descriptive words.
Days and weeks passed. One morning, the nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.
Paragraph 1:
The other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. ________
Paragraph2:
Later the man asked the nurse why his roommate described such wonderful things. ________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
The other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. He supported himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He slowly turned to lookout of the window beside the bed. To his surprise, it faced a blank wall.
Paragraph 2:
Later the man asked the nurse why his roommate described such wonderful things. The nurse responded that the man was blind and perhaps he described the beautiful scene outside the window just to encourage him. There is great happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.

Henry returned home on the evening of February 3, 2018, teary-eyed and exhausted. The 33-year-old professional photographer had just run from one end of Hawaii's Waimea Bay(夏威夷威美亚湾)to the other while wildly scanning the water to look for his "baby", but in vain. By then, night had started to fall.
At home, Henry took his search online. "I was surfing tonight and lost my baby," he wrote on Facebook. That "baby" was a blue surfboard that had been made for him. Hours earlier, the crash of a big wave had separated Henry from this prized possession.
"I caught the biggest waves of my life on that board," Henry later said. "That's why it means so much to me." He hoped it would wash ashore and that whoever spotted it would have also seen his Facebook post. But the currents of Waimea Bay swept it out to sea, away from the Hawaiian Islands.
Weeks passed with no sign of the surfboard, so he saved for months and decided to buy anew one.
But Henry never completely forgot about the board, which—six months after and more than 5,000 miles away from where it disappeared—floated by the remote island of Sarangani in the southern Philippines(菲律宾). The local fisherman found it and sold the board to Bran. He was a teacher in a poorly-equipped elementary school, and hoped to learn to surf and one day share the skill with his students. He bought Henry's surfboard for 40.
The once-blue board had faded to a pale straw color during its journey, but its distinctive markings were still there. Underneath the markings were the words "Henry, Hawaii." Realizing how far the surfboard had traveled, Bran was astonished. He was searching for relevant information on the Internet when Henry's post caught his attention.

Bran contacted Henry online and sent him photos of the board. ________
With the school supplies and the new surfboard, Henry went to Bran's school. ________
【答案】
Bran contacted Henry online and sent him photos of the board. The moment Henry saw the photos, despite the faded color, he recognized his "baby". Henry was amazed to learn that his "baby" had drifted across the ocean and survived. Without delay, he reached out to Bran. Much to his surprise, Bran was also enthusiastic about surfing. The happy coincidence made him determine to buy Bran a brand-new surfboard. What surprised him most were Bran's poor school conditions, which fueled him to help them. To
convey his gratitude, Henry decided to fly to the Philippines with some backpacks and books as well as the new board.
With the school supplies and the new surfboard, Henry went to Bran's school. On his arrival, he caught sight of Bran, with the board beside him. Seeing his beloved board, Henry was overjoyed to recover it. Overwhelmingly grateful, he gave Bran a big hug. Henry showed the brand-new board prepared for him and offered to teach him to surf. Later, they handed out the backpacks and books to the students, who were extremely pleased and exclaimed in delight. It dawned on Henry that every act of kindness could make a great difference and brighten the world.

When Anne Glancey, a retired school teacher, received notice from the city of Hamilton Township that she would be fined up to 3,000 per day for code violations(违规)and repairs that needed to be made to her home, she didn't know what to do. She did not have the money to pay for the repairs, and she had no family or friends she could ask for help.
The only contact she regularly made with others was with her neighbors of five years, Adam and Kristin Polhemus. Anne showed the letter to them, which explained that she needed to scrape(刮)and paint her house, remove the abandoned and rusted car in her yard, and cut the grass. These were three violations in total, each with a fine of no more than 1,000, per day, per violation. Anne had grown up in the house, and the letter made her upset. She didn't know what she was going to do and she couldn't do this herself. "Anne, we'll help you get this fixed," Adam said.
Kristin posted a call for help and volunteers to help make repairs and paint Anne's house on Facebook. Her post read as follows:
Hamilton area friends! Are you free for a few hours this weekend? We need you! Adam and I could use your help for some painting at the home of our elderly neighbor, Anne. As you know, she received a heavy fine and she's on a deadline to scrape and repaint her home to avoid the fine. She's limited in funds and the physical ability to do the work, and we'd love nothing more than to show her we care. We really do need your help; we only have a few people right now and we're hoping for about 20 volunteers to make this happen. THANK YOU!
【答案】
Anne, Adam and Kristin were overjoyed at the response. More than 25 kind neighbors showed up over several weekends to volunteer and donate supplies. The volunteers brought their own supplies and tools, repainted the house and donated the old and rusty unused car to the charity organizations. All work was done for free. During the break, Anne made and served homemade orange juice and her family's special carrot cakes to the volunteers.
Anne decided to do something in return. She spent a whole week preparing a gathering to express thanks to those who offered her the kind help. Then she invite them to come. That day, it was amazing that nearly all the volunteer neighbors came. They talked happily like family members. Before the party ended, Anne presented each with a love card and they too a photo together. Anne posted the photo including these words: When we come together to love and help each other, we can make a beautiful difference.

A warm and sunny afternoon on a holiday, birds were singing and flowers were waving in the breeze. The sunshine cast beautiful shadows among the leaves. Susan was sitting in the room and doing the weaving(编织)task her grandmother had set, absentminded.
A group of little girls came up to Susan from outside, jumping and talking happily. Rose, her best friend, asked Susan if she would like to play in the woods with them. Susan sighed and refused. After all, she had to finish the job first. The girls argued it must be rather tiresome to stay at home on such a good day. They commented that Susan's grandmother was too strict. After hearing this, Susan bent her head.
As they disappeared in the distance, she could picture what would happen to these little crazy creatures. However, her heart sank, thinking of the crown (皇冠)game—the girl's favorite. She was sure that she would be the queen if she were there. Suddenly, an idea flashed into her mind. Perhaps there might be no harm if she moved the mark Grandmother had put in the stocking. After a while, she told her grandmother that she had made it, her heart beating wildly. Grandmother was shocked, but took the work, surveying it very closely. Then laying great stress on each word, she told Susan it was true, because she had counted twenty turns from the mark. Besides, she believed Susan had never cheated her. "Susan, go and amuse yourself as you like. Grandma said, gently patting her on the head. Hearing this, Susan's cheeks turned red, but she rushed out even forgetting to say thanks.
The girls were excited and surprised to see Susan join their company. Soon, the woods were bursting with the elves'(小精灵)laughter. Not a moment later, Susan sat on the grass, feeling guilty. She did cheat. When her companions ran about enjoying themselves, Susan wished she were at home admitting her fault.

【答案】
Finally, the exciting moment came and all girls decided to make a crown of flowers. Rose and Susan were to make the crown while other girls went to pick flowers. Minutes later, the girls came back with flowers of different colors. Then Rose and Susan began to work. Soon, a fancy crown was made! The girls heatedly discussed who should be the queen. One tall, thin girl said Susan was to wear it for she behaved best both at home and school, and others nodded with smiles. Here came the thrilling ceremony. However, Susan stood still, not a bit excited when Rose put the crown on her head. Unexpectedly, Susan snatched it off and threw it on the ground.
The girls looked at her with surprise. Tears welling up in her eyes, Susan explained that she had cheated grandmother in order to play in the woods with them. Feeling sorry, Rose comforted her and said she was great to admit her fault. Drying her tears, Susan ran home and told everything to her grandmother. To her relief, her grandmother forgave her, saying, "I knew it all the time, but I let you go, hoping you would tell me yourself." Susan's cheeks turned red, and made up her mind that she would never tell a lie again.
