More play and less work makes for more talented(有才能的) children. Some officials suggested that school hours for children aged 7 to 12 should be reduced, and that they should be1.to spend at least an hour a day on team sports.
All work and no play makes children depressed. Becky, an 8-year-old girl, used to be happy when she finished classes every day, but now, life has become unhappy. To make sure she has enough time for the lessons, she has to study until 11 at night to finish her homework.
Some ideas are offered for helping cultivate(培养) kids’ talents. The ideas2.cutting down classroom hours, introducing more team sports for children, getting parents to stop putting too much pressure on children and some other suggestions. It is believed that all these can help train young people to be confident.
“I used to go to the park with my parents on weekends before because I like playing tennis with my dad and I can play well,” a boy said, “But now, I3.have time to do that any more.”

13、For centuries, humans have wondered whether there is life on Mars. Why is Mars losing its air? Last week, the question was answered.
“The answer, is blowing in the wind,” said Michael Meyer. He is the lead scientist for Mars Exploration Program.
It turns out solar winds from the sun are slowly stripping( 除掉) away Mars' air. That is what scientists explained at a
press conference.
Bruce Jakosky is the principal investigator on the MA VEN team. It is a spacecraft that collects information from Mars as it circles around the planet.
Today, Mars has a thin atmosphere. It is cold and dry. ______
"When we look at ancient Mars, we see a different type of surface. One that had valleys that looked like they were carved by water, lakes that were standing for a long period of time. We see an environment that was much more able to support liquid water."
Recently scientists found a kind of liquid water that flows with salt down a mountain area of the planet. But, it is not always there. Scientists already knew that ice exists on Mars. So why is it important to find liquid water?
"It means that we have a resource. And when we're looking at sending humans to Mars, water is one of the key things that we need to have. Not only for the astronauts to drink, but also to make oxygen and fuel."
Sending humans to Mars will be in the 2030s. Those chosen might fly any number of space vehicles still in development. Human beings are developing rockets and spacecraft to get people to Mars. Scientists want to know how the human body reacts to being in space for long period of time.
Whether there is life on Mars remains unanswered. But some scientists think there might be some kind of microbial life on the planet. Finding life on another planet would change the way we view the whole universe.

16、Have you ever thought about how much water you use in a day?
Starting February 1st, each person in Cape Town, South Africa received a daily supply of 13 .2 gallons of water which is only enough for a 10 ---minute shower! This restriction (限制) was introduced in preparation for April 22nd, also known as Day Zero, on which the city will turn off all municipal (市政) water taps because of the overuse of fresh water these years.
Over the past three years, Cape Town has suffered from a dangerous drought (干旱). That, along with a growing population of four million people, has caused water---supply drop strongly. As of November 2017, the water level in their largest water reservoir (水库) had dropped to 28% from 102.9% in 2014. That amount is expected to come down to 13 .5% by April 22, 2018.What's worse, the last 10% of the reservoir's levels are not potable (safe to drink) because of the dirt at the bottom.
Firstly, researchers thought the cause of the drought was El Niño. Cape Town could become the first ever major city to run out of water. The government has called on people to conserve the little water they have left by way of
pr evention, including stopping car washing and filling up swimming pools. They are asking the public to cut showers to two minutes and reuse bathing water to flush the toilet.
When Cape Town reaches Day Zero, there will be 200 water stations scattered(分布) across the town for people to receive the ir daily supply of 6.6 gallons. Armed guards will stand by to make sure there is no violence(暴力冲突) or theft.
The water shortage has already influenced all parts of Cape Town. People's lives are being affected, with those in the tourism industry and businesses like car washing, seeing no chance to make a living. The relationship between people also becomes worse as neighbors are encouraged to report each other for water waste and the government plans to collect a drought tax(税收) as they are losing tax money because of the low water use.

A.13 .2 B.13 .5 C.10D.6 .6

19、Dear Peter,
How is it going? I’m writing to invite you to join our “Chinese Poetry Reading” group.
We have Chinese Poetry Reading activity in Room 4 on Monday afternoon. It begins at 4:30 and finished at 5:30. First, we revise what we have learned. Then we begin to learn one or two pieces of new poetry. Our Chinese teacher usually explains the meaning of it. When we understand it, we read it about again and again. Sometimes we read it one by one.
Finally we read it aloud with feelings together.
I fell proud when I read Chinese poetry. I hope you could join us. I’ looking forward to your early reply.
Yours, Li Hua。
