This is a question that causes disagreement among many animal experts.⑰Some, we may just call them Group A, believe that placing animals in a zoo does harm to them. These people think that all animals should be protected from being hunted too much and left in their native land. They also advise people to be educated to know more about animals in the wild.⑱Other experts of Group B think differently. They say that modern zoos are designed very closely to the natural environment. One of their strongest arguments is that certain species, such as the panda from China and the white tiger from India, are not only protected from uncontrolled killing but can give babies under protection and in that way may be saved from dying out.⑲OK, that’s all from me and you’re expected to express your opinions on this question next class.⑳
第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A
Do you know how to prepare for and survive a major earthquake? According to Department of Conservation scientists, it is important to have the right answer to that question.
How to Be Prepared
Electricity, water, gas(煤气) and telephones may not be working after an earthquake. The police and fire departments are likely to be tied up. You should be prepared to take care of yourself for at least three days, preferably for a week. You’ll need food, water and so on. It’s also a good idea to decide ahead of time how and where your family will reunite if separated during a quake. You might choose an out-of-the-area friend or relative that family members can call to check on you.
____________
If you’re indoors, stay there. Get under a desk or table. The kitchen is a particularly
dangerous spot. If you’re in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator. If you’re outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you. If you’re driving, move the car out of traffic and stop. Avoid parking under or on bridges or overpasses.
After an Earthquake
Check for fire. If you smell gas, shut off the main gas valve(阀). If there’s sign of damage to electrical wiring, shut off the power at the control box. If the phone is working, only use it in case of emergency(紧急情况). Avoid driving if possible to keep the streets clear for emergency vehicles. Be careful that things may fall out of cupboards when the door is opened, and also that chimneys can be weakened and fall with just a touch. Listen to the radio for important information and instructions. Remember that aftershocks, sometimes large enough to cause damage in their own right, generally follow large quakes. If you leave home, leave a message telling your friends and family your location.

One night, the first floor of the house suddenly caught fire. The fire was big, and soon became a sea of fire. On the second floor lived a little girl and her grandmother; the little girl’s parents had died, and she lived together with her grandmother. In order to rescue the little girl, the grandmother was burned to death, leaving the little girl crying for help loudly.
How could people enter the house? At the very moment, a man carrying a ladder rushed to the flames and got into the window. When he appeared again in the eyes of the people, the little girl was in his arms. He gave the child to the crowd, and then disappeared into the night.
This little girl had no family. Two months later a meeting was held to find a person to adopt (收养) the girl. A teacher was willing to adopt this child, and said she could give her the best education; a farmer wanted to adopt this child, saying that village life would let the child grow up healthily and happily; a rich man said,“I can give the child everything that others can do.”
A lot of people who wanted to adopt this child said about many benefits of their adopting the child. But the little girl’s face had no expression. At this time, a man, through the crowd, walked straight ahead to the little girl, and opened his arms for the little girl. People were puzzled, and they found that the man had terrible scars on his arms. Forces other than damaging winds are also at work inside tornadoes. Sometimes, as the wind passes a house, the walls and ceiling burst apart as if a bomb had gone off inside. This explosion(爆炸) is caused by the low air pressure(压力) at the center of a tornado.
The pressure at the center of a tornado is usually 13 pounds per square inch. However, inside the house the air pressure is normal, about 15 pounds per square inch. The difference of 2 pounds per square inch between the inside and outside pressure may not seem like much. But suppose a tornado passes over a small building that measures 20 by 10 by 10 feet. On each square inch of the building, there is 2 pounds of pressure from the inside that is not balanced by air pressure outside
the building. On the ceiling, that adds up to an unbalanced pressure of 57,600 pounds. The pressure of the four walls adds up to 172,800 pounds.
If windows are open in the building, some of the inside air will rush out through them. This will balance the pressure inside and outside the building. But if the windows are shut tightly, the huge inside pressure may cause the building to burst.
Unfortunately, heavy rain often occurs in the storms that later produce tornadoes, so people often shut their windows. This may cause far worse damage later.

Please be seated and enjoy your meal. Just don’t talk about it.
Such are the instructions at a popular dining party known as “silent dinners”,which encourages guests not to speak for one or two hours and to avoid using electronic devices. Instead, the idea is to just focus on the food.
“I believe the interest in the experience is growing,”said Honi Ryan, who has hosted 32 silent dinner parties in 11 cities across eight countries.“The way we communicate is changing so ra pidly that we need to stop and think about it.”
According to a 2013 nationwide survey, restaurant noise came in second only to poor service among customer complaints. And 19 percent of diners who took part in the survey said noise and crowds annoyed them most while eating out.
While silent dinners may seem curious, the idea is not a new one. Yogis(瑜伽信徒) have long enjoyed silent meals as part of a deepened practice, with noisefree meals still included in modern day retreats. In fact, it was a trip to a temple in India by a man that inspired one Brooklyn restaurant recently to add a silent dinner to its event programming.
“We’ll make a small speech at the beginning of the meal to make sure everyone understands what is happening and ask them not to speak or use their cell phones for at least an hour,”said EAT Greenpoint owner Jordan Colon. In addition to removing conversation, background music will be turned off as well.
“When I first opened EA T, I didn’t play music for a while and people had very different reactions to that,”said Colon.“Those coming out to eat were ready to party, but it was so quiet without music.I just wanted to create an atmosphere where you could relax.”
While personal responses to a silent dinner may vary, in general they are more likely to get into a lot of conversation afterward. At the end of the night people always have a lot to say about silence. But the most constant reaction is that there is always a good laugh.
