2. After finishing a meal at an American Chinese restaurant you probably expect to receive a handful of fortune cookies after you pay the bill. Fortune cookies are in Chinese restaurants throughout the United States. It’s rather satisfying to crack open a cookie at the end of your meal and read your “lucky fortune” on the slip of paper inside.
The exact origin of the fortune cookie is unknown. It is thought that the tasty snack was the first introduced into San Francisco in 1914, after an immigrant began distributing the cookie with “thank you” notes in them. These “thank you” notes were intended as symbols of appreciation for friends who stood with him through the economic hardship and discrimination of his early life in America.
There is an alternate origin story. Los Angeles is regarded as the site of the fortune cookie’s invention. In this version of the story, David Jung, a Chinese immigrant residing in L. A., is thought to have created the cookie in order to uplift the spirits of the poor and homeless. In 1918, Jung handed out the cookies for free to the poor outside his shop and each cookie contained a strip of paper with an inspirational sentence printed on it.
Fortune cookies first began to gain popularity in mainstream American culture during WWII. Chinese restaurants would serve them in place of desserts, as desserts were not popular in traditional Chinese cuisine. Today fortune cookies are not tied to Chinese-American culture. In fact, the largest fortune cookie manufacturer is located in the United States and it produces 4.5 million fortune cookies a day —— an evidence to the modern-day popularity of the snack. However, an attempt to introduce the fortune cookie to China in 1992 was a failure, and the cookie was cited for being “too American.”
So the next time you break open a fortune cookie and read a fortune about the many successes you should expect in your future, remember that the conclusion to your Chinese restaurant meal may not be as Chinese as you think.

3. New research dispels (消除) the myth that the time of day you eat your biggest meal can help with weight loss-though eating earlier may still have health benefits.
Two studies from 2013 suggested that consuming more calories early in the day and fewer calories in the evening helps people lose weight. Yet a major new study has found that while the relative size of breakfast and dinner influences self-reported appetite, it has no effect on metabolism (新陈代谢) and weight loss.
To investigate the link between the size of breakfast and dinner and their effect on hunger, a team of researchers at the universities of Aberdeen and Surrey conducted a controlled study in healthy but overweight people. The participants were fed two diets, each for four weeks: a big breakfast and a small dinner, and a small breakfast with a big dinner. We kept lunches the same. All study participants undertook both diet conditions so that the effect of meal patterns could be compared in the same people.
The results of the experiment found no differences in body weight or any biological measures of energy usage between the two meal patters. The only difference was a change in the self-reported feeling of hunger and related factors, such as the quantity of food they wanted to eat. Across the day, the meal pattern of big breakfast and small dinner caused participants to report less hunger throughout the day. This effect may be useful for people looking to lose weight, as it may help them better control their hunger and eat less.
As with all research, there were some limitations to our study. We only studied participants for four weeks for each meal pattern. Past research has shown the largest differences in the effects of early versus late energy intake after four weeks. However, the fact that neither calories eaten nor calories burned changed over four weeks shows that body weight is unlikely to have changed if the study was longer.
1. What does the new research suggest?
A.Eating earlier won’t do any good to your health.
B.It was best to eat a large meal at the beginning of the day.
C.When to eat your biggest meal is not so important for weight loss.
D.Right timing for your meals can make a difference in weight loss.
2. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A.By analyzing the previous data. B.By conducting a questionnaire survey.
C.By observing the behavior of the participants. D.By comparing the impacts of two meal patterns.
3. What difference may a “big breakfast” make?
A.People are more likely to feel hungry. B.People burn calories at a faster pace.
C.People feel it easier to control food intake. D.People tend to lose more weight in a
month.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards the result of the research?
A.Objective. B.Doubtful. C.Critical. D.Indifferent.
4. Latin America’s first renewable fuel-powered, garbage-trapping wheel is cleaning one of Panama’s dirtiest rivers. It is powered by water and solar energy. It pulls waste out of the Juan Diaz River. Most of the waste comes from the capital area of Panama City where about 2 million people live. Thousands of kilograms of garbage flow down the river into the ocean each year.
A s the leader of the project, Robert Getman said, “Cleaning beaches is good, but it is more effective and cheaper to trap garbage in rivers because when it reaches the ocean, the environmental and economic cost becomes too high” The Juan Diaz River is one o f the most polluted in Panama. Waste systems in the area are poor, and land development is not well supervised. The river also passes through Panama City, one of Central America's largest cities. Still, the waterway and its mangrove trees provide habitats for wildlife like turtles and birds.
According to this situation, the environmental group Marea Verde launched the wheel in late September, which is named Wanda Diaz. By the middle of October, it had gathered 28.6 cubic meters of plastic bottles from the water. Over five years, Marea Verde projects have slowed the spread of waste along the Juan Diaz River and other Panama's rivers. Several years ago, the group launched its “Barrier or Trash” technology, a floating device. It captured more than 100 metric to ns of waste in the Matias Hernandez River within two years.
The Baltimore Bay “Trashwheel” in the United States is the model for Marea Verde's machine, Wanda Diaz. However, Wanda Diaz is more advanced and superior in terms of technology, and it even has cameras with artificial intelligence (AI) that can recognize and sort different plastics.
“We want each of us to raise awareness that we can prevent the death of the Juan Diaz River,” said Marea Verde’s leader Sandy Watemberg. She expressed her hope that the wheel would also help many more other rivers. But she also pointed out that those who accustomed themselves to single-use plastics needed to rethink their behavior.
1. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “supervised” in paragraph 2?
A.Recognized. B.Captured. C.Monitored. D.Powered.
2. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
A.The progress the Marea Verde group has made.
B.Great damage to Panama City.
C.The importance of the Juan Diaz River.
D.Measures taken to protect wildlife.
3. What can we learn about Wanda Diaz?
A.It is an updated version of “Trashwheel”.
B.It has AI to break down plastics.
C.It is the model for “Trashwheel”.
D.It has AI cameras to remove plastics.
4. What message does Sandy Watermberg seem to convey?
A.The death of the Juan Diaz River is unpreventable.
B.Humans’ living habits do matter in river protection.
C.River protection has received the attention of all the world.
D.People should be strictly banned from using plastic products.
5. ChatGPT, designed by OpenAI to carry on conversations just like humans, has become a viral excitement.
1 Its ability to provide in-depth answers to user questions has even drawn the attention of distinguished technology companies.
The intelligent robot understands what the user says or types and then responds in a way that makes sense. Its vast body of knowledge has been gathered from the Internet and archived (归档) books. It is further trained by humans. 2
“We have a lot of information on the Inter net, but you normally have to Google it, then read it and then do something with it,” says Ricardo. “Now you'll have this resource that can process the whole Internet and all of the information it contains for you to answer your question.”
ChatGPT cannot think on its own. It depends on the information that it has been trained on. As a result, the AI too! works well for things that have accurate data available. However, when unsure, Chat GPT can get creative and flow out incorrect responses. 3 Also, ChatGPT has only been trained with information till 2021. Hence, it cannot be relied upon for anything that happened after that.
4 It can translate long texts into different languages, create content on almost any topic, and even summarize books. However, ChatGPT has received mixed reactions from educators. Some believe it could serve as a valuable tool to help build literacy skills in the classroom.
5 But other educators think ChatGPT will encourage students to cheat. They fear this will prevent them from building
critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As a result, many districts are starting to ban its use in schools.

Raju’s family was the smallest family on the coastal line of Kanyakumari. Raju was 10 years old. He was tall, dark and handsome and had a lot of dreams. He had always dreamt of living in a city. He was always his dad’s charm, as he was not quite happy to spend time with his mom. All he could remember about his mom was her scars, red and white scars on her face, neck and hands. He always felt unpleasant to see his mom’s face. But what he did not know was that his mom scratched her beauty to save him from a fire when he was one year old. Not wanting to burden him with it, Raju’s parents kept it a secret.
His mom Kamala used to drop him to school and pick him up every day. He felt awkward to see his mom with that scarred face standing in front of the school gate. As he was laughing and chatting with his fellow school mates, all of them became silent and started staring at the gate. So, Raju turned towards the gate with a lot of curiosity. He froze when seeing his mom, face covered with a piece of cloth. Raju felt ashamed and rushed out of the school with lots of anger.
With days passing by, Raju started to dislike his mom more. He did not like to get picked up or dropped by his mom. He felt that she was ugly and so abnormal. As he grew old, he stopped going out with her to the market or anywhere outside. Kamala tried her best to make her son happy, got him everything that he wanted and gave him his space. She understood what her son was going through and felt pity for herself and sad for her son, as she was helpless.
When Raju turned 15, he was sent to a city high school 67 kilometers away from his coastal village. The very thought of not being with his ugly mother made him very happy.
Three years later, then came Raju’s graduation ceremony. His parents didn’t want to be absent from such an important occasion, so they managed to be there without informing Raju.
