Period 2 Reading1
I. Teaching aims:
1. Encourage the Ss to grasp the main topics of the article.
2. Arouse the Ss’ interest in le arning English by talking about their own opinions. II. Teaching important point:
Develop the student s’ reading ability---how to guess the meanings of new words.
III. Teaching difficult point:
1. Find the main points and express them.
2. Understand the text.
IV. Procedures:
Step1. Greeting and revision
Ask some Ss to name the treatments learnt in the last period.
What other treatments do you know? Can you name them?
Step2. Lead-in
People may take medicines when they are ill. However, if they don’t t ake the right medicine in the right way, they may not get better and even get worse.
Have you ever got a fever? And what medicine do you often take when you get a high fever? T: Yes, they are two important medicines which can reduce fever. What else do you know about these two medicines? Eg: How were they invented?
Step3.Fast reading
Ask Ss to scan the passa ge to answer the following questions:
When was one of the medicines first sold as a tablet?
What did Fleming, Florey and Chain share?
Step4.Careful r eading
1. Read the passage again and try to answer the questions in partC1.
2. Ask the Ss to find out the development of the two medicines.
Development of Aspirin:
In 1900: sold in shops as a tablet
In 1950: as the best-selling painkiller recorded in the Guinness Book
In 1971: proved to be a blood-thinning medicine
In 1977: used to prevent a stroke
In 2003: used to reduce blood sugar levels
Development of Penicillin:
In 1928: discovered by Alexander Fleming
World War II: found new chemical techniques to purify it
In 1945: all the scientists shared the Nobel Pr ize
3. Look for the effects of the two medicines.
Effects of aspirin:
Reduce fever Help stop body pains
Reduce the risk of heart attacks Prevent a stroke
Reduce the risk of colon cancer Help with diabetes
Increase the length of people’s lives
Effects of penicillin:
Help in treating wounds and infections
Treat other illnesses including pneumonia
