Li Qingzhao (1084-1155) is one of the best-known female writers in Chinese history. She showed great love for writing and was known as a talented special woman then. But her life was a bittersweet story.
Born into a famous literary (文学) family, Li was someone who always wanted to destroy old customs and traditions from the start. Women in the Song Dynasty stayed indoors. They didn’t discuss politics, and only spoke when spoken to. But just at the age of 17, Li Qingzhao made a name for herself.
She was lucky in her marriage. In 1101, she married Zhao Mingcheng, with whom she shared the interest in the art collection. They lived in present-day Shandong. They were not wealthy, but they lived happily together. Li and her husband collected many books. They shared a love of poetry and often wrote poems for each other. They sold clothes and went hungry to slowly build up a big library, and they always spent their nights on literary drinking games like this one: An event would be chosen from a pile of books, and the person would win if he/she first named the book, chapter, page, and line where it was found.
This happy life was ruined by the wars of 1127. The Northern Song capital fell this year during the Jin-Song wars. Fighting took place in Shandong and their house was burned. The couple took many of their possessions and ran away to Nanjing, where they lived for a year. Zhao Mingcheng died in 1129, leaving her childless and alone. Li Qingzhao’s life was full of twists and turns (波折), but she left many valuable poems to us.

The earth is 4.6 billion years old. We humans have lived on the earth for only 35,000 years, but during this period, we have changed our planet a lot in many ways. Some things we have done are very good for the earth while others are bad.
The Amazon rainforest in South America, at seven million km², is the largest rainforest in the world. The forest is important for people all over the world because it produces a lot of oxygen, and also helps to cool the weather. But large areas of the rainforest are being cut down for wood—55% of the forest could be gone by 2030! The World Wildlife Federation(WWF) is helping to stop some areas of the rainforest from being cut down.
At 68,000 km², the Aral Sea was one of the largest lakes in the world before the 1960s. Then rivers were diverted(修改河道) and it has been getting smaller ever since. By 2007, it was only 10% of its original size and had divided into three separate lakes. Dust storms happen again and again and the villages sit on the edge of a huge desert(沙漠) with large ships stranded(搁浅) in its sand. A dam(水坝) has been built to try to bring back higher water levels in the North with some success.
In China, about 3,600 km² of grassland near the Gobi turns into desert every year. There are often storms that blow dust all the way to Beijing. The storms are getting worse each year and have a deep influence on farmers.
The goal of the Green Wall Project, started in 1978, is to increase forests in northern China from 5% to 15% in order to stop the desert from growing. The project faces many challenges. However, people must never give up on it.
Saving the disappearing nature needs everyone’s effort. Although each one of us may only do a little, together we can make a big difference. What can you do to protect the environment? 27.Why must we save the Amazon according to the passage?

It was a very sunny Saturday, and the zoo was crowded with families. Harry Potter’s uncle and aunt bought their son Dudley a large chocolate ice-cream for his birthday. Harry Potter didn’t get it, and no one remembers his 11th birthday was also coming soon.
After lunch they went to the reptile (爬行动物) house. It was cool and dark in here, with glass windows all along the walls. All kinds of lizards (蜥蜴) and snakes were behind the glass window. Dudley quickly found the largest snakes there. It was sleeping now. Dudley stood with his nose pressed against the glass staring at the snake. Dudley ordered his father to make the snake move, but the snake just took his sleep.
“This is boring.” Dudley said. He went away quickly.
Harry potter moved in front of the window and looked at the snake. He w ouldn’t be surprised if the snake had died of boredom—since it had no friends except stupid people trying to disturb it all day long. The snake suddenly opened its big eyes. Slowly, very slowly, it raised its head.
It winked (眨眼). Harry Potter was surprised. No one noticed it. He winked, too. The snake gave Harry Potter a look that said quietly: “I get that all the time.” “I know, ” Harry Potter says in a low voice, though he wasn’t sure the snake could hear him. “It must be really annoying.” The snake nodded in agreement.
Then Harry Potter and the snake began to talk...
“DAD! MUM! COME AND LOOK AT THIS SNAKE! YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT IT’S DOING!” Dudley jumped towards the snake as fast as he could.
“Out of the way, you!” he cried, pushing Harry Potter away. C aught by surprise, Harry fell hard on the floor, angrily. Next, no one saw how it happened—one second, Dudley was falling through the glass window as if the window was never there! He was so afraid that he cried loudly. The large snake was moving slowly to the gate. As the snake moved past Harry Potter, he heard a low voice said “Brazil, here I come...Thanks, amigo.”
