III. Reading Comprehension
Questions 61-65 are based on the following passage:
The sharp hearing of a fish has been proved by two scientists. These men trained a fish to expect its food when it heard the sound of a whistle. The fish always opened and closed its mouth when it heard the feeding signal .And it was also proved that even a slight sound two hundred feet away could drive them away. That should make fishermen start thinking!
One scientist has made more than fourteen thousand experiments testing the ability of fish to recognize different colors. A small bottle with a coloured sign round it was lowered among the fish. When a fish swam near it .The food was given .Then other colours were wrapped round the bottle. If a fish came near these, a gentle electric shock was given as a punishment by touching the fish's back with an electric wire. After between five to ten times, most of the fish could tell the difference between red ,brown ,yellow and green.
Fish also have an eye for different shapes. One of the experts in the field proved this by teaching fish to connect certain patterns with food. He used a small circle and a square. If the fish swam towards the circle, they received food as a reward. If they swam towards the square, they received nothing, The fish learned in time to go to the circle but not to the square. Does this mean that in time fish might learn to leave alone all food on hooks that they have seen often before? Here is something for all fishermen to think about.
These facts help to make more believable some of the "believe it or not" stories that have been told about fish .It is clear that fish have sometimes shown their ability to gain knowledge as man does.
It was reported once there was a pool of goldfish with a little platform above it. The platform was covered at certain times with plenty of ants' eggs, and tied up by a piece of string. The end of the string hung in the water. The goldfish quickly learned how to feed themselves by giving the string a pull, Pulling this string turned over the platform. At once a shower of ants' eggs would fall into the water.

Questions 66-70 are based on the following passage:
Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it. The price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on proceeds at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone’s satisfaction.
For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else—he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute bluntly; he does so with skil l and polish: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size. It happens to be the color you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is : “This is the right color and may be t he right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”
Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round.” She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lookout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going form one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

Yet despite that, reading is increasingly unpopular among children .According to statistics in 1997, 23% said they didn’t like reading at all.In 2003, 35% didn’t.And around 6% of the children leave primary school each year unable to read properly.
Maybe the decline is caused by the increasing availability of computes games.Maybe the books boom has affected only the top of the educational pile.Either way, Chancellor Cordon Brown plans to change things for the bottom of the class .In his pre-budget report, he announced the national project of Reading Recovery to help the children struggling most.
Reading Recovery is aimed at six year olds, who receive four months of individual daily half-hour classes with a specially trained teacher. An evaluation this year reported that children on the school made 20 months’ progress in just one year, whereas similarly weak readers without special help made just five months’ progress ,and so ended the year even further below the level expected for the ir age.International research tends to find that when British children leave primary school, they read well ,but read text often for fun than those elsewhere .Reading for fun matters because children who are keen on reading can report lifelong pleasure and loving books is an excellent indicator of future educational success .According to the OECD, being a regular and enthusiastic reader is of great advantage.

Questions 76-80 are based on the following passage:
Time and how we experience it have always puzzled us.Physicists have created fascinating theories, but their time is measured by a pendulum(钟摆)and is not psychological time, which leaps with little regard to the clock or calendar. As someone who understood the distinction observed, “When you sit with a nice girl for two hours, it seems like a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove, a minute seems like two hours.”
Psychologists have long noticed that larger units of time, such as months and years, fly on swifter wings as we age. They also note that the more time is structured with schedules and appointments, the more rapidly it seems to pass. For example, a day at the office flies compared with a day at the beach.Since most of us spend fewer days at the beach and more at the office as we age, an increase in structured time could well be to blame for why time seems to speed up as we grow older.
Expectation and familiarity also make time seem to flow more rapidly.Almost all of us have had the experience of driving somewhere we’ve never been before.Surrounded by unfamiliar scenery, with no real idea of when we'll arrive, we experience the trip, feeling it takes long time.Although exactly long as the same, it seems to take far less time when getting back. The novelty of the outward journey had become routine. Thus taking a different route on occasions can often help slow the clock.
When days become the same as beads (小珠子)on a string, they mix together, and even months become a single day.To counter this, try to find ways to interrupt the structure of your day -- to stop time, so to speak.
Learning something new is another way to slow the passage of time. One of the reasons the days of our youth seem so full and long is that these are the days of learning and discovery.
76.The quotation in the first paragraph is used to indicate ______.

D. that, with little regard of a clock or calendar, psychological time is quite puzzling

C. speed up
D. be in a psychological sense
