What is language for? Some people seem to think it's for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words—the longer the lists, the better. That's wrong. Language is for the exchange(交流)of ideas and information. It's meaningless knowing all about a language if you can't use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently. They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard saw once wrote, "Foreigners often speak English too correctly." But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They're English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, they make language. But a people can only make its own language. It can't make another people's language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn't overdo(做过头)it. They should put communication first.
46. Language is used to ________.
A. practice grammar rules
B. express oneself
B. talk with foreigners only D. learn lists of words
47. Generally, when an American or an Englishman speaks English, he ________.
A. never makes mistakes
B. often makes mistakes
C. always makes mistakes
D. can't avoid making mistakes
48. "Foreigners often speak English too correctly. " This sentence means that ________.
A. foreigners speak correct English
B. foreigners speak incorrect English
C. foreigners never make mistakes when they speak English
D. foreigners speak English according to the grammar rules
49. If too many native speakers break a rule, ________.
A. they should say sorry to others
B. they are against the law
C. what they use will become right
D. they will become heroes

Look at the pictures below. Do you know why these things were developed or invented?
A few years ago, Masaru Ibuka, the head of Sony, was at a
company planning meeting. Suddenly he had an idea. He
stopped the meeting and asked everyone what would happen
if Sony took away the recording function(录音功能) and
speakers(扬声器) and sold a tape player with headphones
instead. Almost everyone thought he was silly. Still, Ibuka
kept his idea and worked at it. The result, of course, turned out to be successful Sony Walkman.
Good ideas often start with a really silly question. Bill Bowerman was making breakfast one day. As he stood there making cakes for his son, he asked himself what would happen if he poured rubber into his cake iron(模具). Later, he tried it and the result was something like the bottom of most sports shoes we see today. Still, when he took his idea to several shoe companies, he was laughed at. In fact, every single company refused him. Though rather disappointed, Bowerman went on to set up his own company, NIKE.
We know today, of course, that each of these ideas caused a successful thing that has changed the way many of us live. The best questions are usually open-ended(随意的) and are
often silly. Children aren’t afraid to ask such questions, but adults usually are. Think how different the world might be if people never asked silly questions!
50. Masaru wanted to make a tape player_______.
A. with recording function, speakers and headphones
B. with speakers and headphones, but no recording function
C. with recording function and speakers, but no headphones
D. with headphones, but no recording function or speakers
51. Bill Bowerman got his idea from _______.
A. cooking
B. his son
C. sports clothes
D. sports shoes
52. From the passage, we know _______.
A. it’s easy to make one’s idea come true
B. sometimes “silly” questions may lead to a successful invention
C. children are often afraid to ask open-ended and silly questions.
D. the more personal questions we ask, the more inventions there will be
C
Few kids today are taught the value of sympathy (同情). It seems so hard for people to show their love and care toward others and to actually understand what they are going through. As a child I was taught to go out of my way to make someone else happy. My mom would tell me to say at least one kind word to someone else every day. I admit that it wasn’t very easy to do. But as soon as you see the look of gratitude (感激) in that perso n’s eyes, you just want to do as much as you can.
I had an experience with a guy that people were always making fun of. Every time I saw that happening, I knew in my heart that it was wrong. I decided I would try to be his friend. I started walking with him and introducing him to people around us. I was making him happy by just doing that. And I loved the fact that I was really making a difference in his life.
After a while I realized that he wasn’t the kind of person everybody thought he was. We are still really good friends today. People have almost completely stopped making fun of him. But he is still what he was. What had changed were the attitudes of others toward him.
From this experience I’ve learned to be more loving toward other people. What I did for my friend was so easy. And at the same time I had a lot of fun. So I hope that everyone could say a kind word to someone else at least once a day. I can promise it will be the best feeling you can ever get.
One kind word could make someone’s day brighter.
53. We can learn from the fourth paragraph that__________________.
A. everyone can have a good friendship
B. one’s attitude to o thers can be changed
C. people shouldn’t make fun of others
D. one’s nature can be changed as time goes by
54. The last two paragraphs suggest that _______.
A. saying a kind word will give you friendship and fun
B. it is really a hard thing to say a kind word to others
C. a kind word may benefit both the speaker and the listener
D. having a lot of fun in life will help to make a good life
55. What does the writer focus on in this passage?
A. Kindness
B. Friendship
C.. Understanding.
D. Fun.
56. Which of the following can best describe the main idea of this passage?
A. Good feelings can make life a little brighter.
B. Having a good friend can brighten your life.
C. It is not easy to say a kind word in our daily life.
D. One kind word could make someone’s day brighter.

First, friends play a very important role in our daily life. We should know who will become our friends. Secondly, true friends will never allow us to do something unvaluable. I don’t think the friends around you are your true friends. Last but not least, it is not easy to make friends for us. Therefore, we must know who is the best for us.
