Who invented the umbrella? There’s even an interesting story about its invention in China.
Lu Ban was the most famous craftsman (工匠) in ancient China. One day, Lu Ban and his wife were taking a walk and enjoying the beautiful view. Suddenly it began to rain. Both of them were soaked when they got back home. Lu Ban’s wife said, “If there is something that can protect people from the rain when they are walking outdoors, it will be wonderful.” Then Lu Ban said, “That’s easy. I will build many pavilions (亭).” His wife replied, “That’s a good idea, but it is not convenient. Is it possible to make a movable (可移动的) pavilion, which could always follow the people?” One day, she saw some kids playing in the rain, and each kid held a big lotus leaf (荷叶) over the head to protect themselves from getting wet. Then, she made the first umbrella in ancient China.

Years ago, when I lived in England, part of my college volunteer job was to help children. I was chosen to work in a school with disabled children. The teacher asked me to take care of Nancy, a 10-year-old girl. One of her hands could not move. At her school, the teachers would think it was an achievement if she was able to put on her own coat. But I saw more in her. She had always wanted to put a string (细绳) through the hole of a key.
For five years, Nancy was in the school. The teachers always tried to help her, but always ended up doing all the work for her. I knew Nancy could do more, so I encouraged her to do something by herself. At first, Nancy could never do it and got very upset. Sometimes I wanted to give up, too. However, after a week, Nancy was able to do what she had wanted to do alone for so many years—she successfully put the string through the hole of a key. We all cried with joy when we saw what she was able to do with just a little encouragement.
With just some encouragement, disabled people can do something. I hope everyone will encourage
people to do all they want by themselves instead of telling them they can’t do it.
43. What can we know about Nancy?
A.She couldn’t talk to anyone.
B.Her legs couldn’t move.
C.She was under 10 years old.
D.She couldn’t put on her coat at first.
44. How did the writer feel at the end of the story?
A.Upset.B.Worried.C.Excited.D.Nervous.
45. What is the best title for the text?
A.Be kind to the disabled people.
B.Never give up when helping others.
C.Helping others brings me happiness.
D.A little encouragement brings a big difference.

Although people drive in all countries, the rules can be quite different between nations and areas. For this reason, you should always learn the laws before you decide to drive in a foreign country.
In the US, people in Alaska may have a learner’s permit (许可) at the age of fourteen. This is quite different from the driving laws of Niger, where a person must be at least twenty-three years old to drive. If you want to know the minimum (最小的) driving age in most countries, the answer is eighteen.
Driving on the right or left side of the road is also different. In Great Britain, Cyprus, Australia, India and Malaysia, people drive on the left. However, in the US, Mexico, France and Canada, people are required to drive on the right.
In fact, one country can have different driving rules for different areas. People in Hong Kong drive on the left while drivers in other parts of China use the right side of the road.
Other different driving laws between countries include those about using mobile phones. In Japan, using any kind of mobile phones is illegal (违法的), even if you do not need to hold the phone with your hands. However, in Argentina and Australia, drivers are allowed to talk on their mobile phones if
they do not use their hands.
You might also find it interesting to learn that some countries have very unusual laws. For example, in Cyprus, it is against the law to eat or drink anything while driving.
46. Which of the following is not discussed in the text?
A.The driving age.B.The driving speed.
C.Right or left side traffic.D.Phone using while driving.
47. What can we know about driving from the text?
A.It is fun to drive in Britain in the afternoon.
B.Drivers in Hong Kong use the right side of the road.
C.In Cyprus, you may make a phone call while driving.
D.It’s against laws to use a mobile phone while driving in Japan.
48. In which country are people not allowed to eat or drink anything while driving?
A.Australia.B.China.C.Japan.D.Cyprus.
49. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Driving in all countries shares a common purpose.
B.Countries have different ways to make laws on driving.
C.There are differences in laws about driving among countries.
D.People in different countries drive on different sides of the road.

Introducing yourself is very important when you meet new people. Many students feel nervous when introducing themselves to the class because they don’t know what and how to share. Here are some ways that will help you introduce yourself with confidence.
Stand up before introducing yourself. This will make you more confident and will help you speak more clearly than sitting. It may feel embarrassed (尴尬的) to stand up, but your introduction will be over more quickly than you think.
Stay confident (自信的) when you speak. When you do like this, you should be in a clear, loud
voice so that everyone is able to hear you. It’s perfectly okay to be nervous—lots of people are when speaking in front of others! But if you can take a deep breath and show confidence, you’ll finish your introduction better.
Smile when you speak. Even if you are super nervous, smiling will make your voice sound calmer and will help you feel less nervous. It also shows your classmates and your teachers that you are friendly.
Offer your hobbies or interests. If you are interested in sports or have pets or like to travel, the end of your introduction is a good place to give this information.
50. What should you do before introducing yourself?
A.Share hobbies.B.Smile at others.C.Stand up.D.Lower your voice. 51. What does the underlined word “this” refer to (指的是)?
A.Staying confident.B.Speaking clearly.
C.Smiling at others.D.Giving your information.
52. What’s the structure of the passage?
A.①/②③④/⑤B.①/②/③④⑤C.①/②③④⑤D.①②/③④/⑤
