Australia officially listed koalas across its eastern coast as “endangered” on Friday. Conservationists (自然环境保护者) said koala populations had crashed in much of eastern Australia over the past two decades, warning that they were now sliding towards extinction.
The koala, a globally recognized symbol of Australia’s unique wildlife, had been listed as “vulnerable (易危)”on the eastern coast just a decade earlier. “We are taking unprecedented (史无前例的) action to protect the koala,” the Minister of Environment, Sussan Ley said, highlighting a recent government promise of Aus$50 million to protect and recover koala habitats.
Environmentalists welcomed the koalas’ new status (地位) but blamed Australia’s failure to protect the species so far. “Koalas have gone from no-listing to vulnerable to endangered within a decade. That is a shockingly fast decline,” said WWF-Australia conservation scientist Stuart Blanch. “Today’s decision is welcome, but it won’t stop koalas from sliding towards extinction unless it’s accompanied by stronger laws to protect their forest homes.”
Alexia Wellbelove of the Humane Society International said east coast koalas could be extinct by 2050 if no action was taken. “We can’t afford any more clearing,” she said. “The
extinction of koalas does not have to happen,” she added, “we must stop allowing their homes to be cleared for mines, new houses, agricultural projects and industrial logging (伐木).”
Australia’s koalas had been living on a “knife edge” even before the “Black Summer” bushfires of 2019-2020 because of land-clearing, drought, disease, car strikes and dog attacks, said Josey Sharrad, wildlife campaign manager at the International Fund for Animal Welfare. “We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national icon (象征),” Sharrad said, “The bushfires were the final straw. This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect critical habitat from development and land-clearing, and seriously deal with the influences of climate change.”
4.What is the problem mentioned in Para 1?
A.Koala populations have increased quickly.
B.Koalas enjoy too much popularity in Australia.
C.Koalas get crushed by other animals.
D.Koalas are at risk of extinction.
5.Why did environmentalists welcome the koala’s new status?
A.This would stop koalas from extinction.
B.They could blame the government’s failure.
C.This could lead to stronger action to protect koalas.
D.They may have time to recover koala habitats.
6.How does the author prove his idea?
A.By making a comparison.B.By analyzing figures.
C.By doing a survey.D.By quoting environmentalists’ words. 7.What’s the purpose of this text?
A.To call on people to protect Koala.B.To show the causes of Koalas’ disappearance.
C.To show Koalas’ important statue.D.To present environmentalists’ words.
Traveling to watch their team play at the World Cup took a little longer than usual for two French fans. Mehdi Balamissa and Gabriel Martin decided the best way to travel from France to Qatar was on two wheels. The friends spent three months traveling 7,000 kilometers by bicycle to reach Qatar 2022 and watch their beloved France defend its title.
“It was a crazy idea, but we’re the kind of people that have big ideas and don’t want to have any regrets,” Balamissa said, as both spoke to CNN Sport a day after arriving in the country. “So, since we are both self-employed, we decided to block off three months of our time and come to Qatar.”
The pair started their mammoth (庞大的) journey at the Stade de France in Paris, home of the French national team, and finished at the stunning Lusail Stadium, the venue that will host the final at Qatar 2022. They would travel on average 115 kilometers per day, taking appropriate rest days when needed. They battled through the heat of the desert in Saudi Arabia as well as flooded woodland areas in Hungary as they made their winding way to Qatar, stopping off at campsites, lodges (乡间小舍) and hotels to sleep.
The idea came about after cycling from France to Italy to watch their country play in the UEFA Nations League last year and they wanted to test themselves with a much longer trip. They hoped their trip would promote the benefits of eco-friendly travel and said they plan to offer cycling workshops to children from disadvantaged backgrounds when they eventually arrive home.
The two cyclists encountered many problems along the way, including dozens of flat tires, but relied on their infectiously positive attitude to get them through. The pair laugh as they recall the time they had to travel 15 hours to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in order to find a bike repair shop before traveling 15 hours back to the exact point where they had stopped.
“We had many troubles, but we fixed them as we went,” Martin told CNN.
8.Why did Balamissa and Martin go to Qatar?
A.To watch their country defending its champion.
B.To do cycling training.
C.To close off three months for no regrets.
D.To set them apart from the other fans.
9.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the two fans?
A.They started the journey in Paris.
B.They traveled on a new route.
C.They experienced severe challenges in the journey.
D.They enjoyed fantastic scenery along the journey.
10.What’s the purpose of the two fans’ cycling trip?
A.To benefit more from the cycling workshops.
B.To raise awareness of green tourism.
C.To explore the secrets and laws of nature.
D.To be involved in the UEFA Nations League.
11.What can best describe Balamissa and Martin?
A.Energetic and determined.B.Cautious and smart.
C.Hard-working and kind.D.Ambitious and considerate.
There are two kinds of people: those who like to pack up leftovers as soon as dinner is over, and those who let leftovers sit out for a few hours so they can cool down.
However, both leaving leftovers out for a long period of time and adding hot items to the fridge can cause problems.
Whether you should immediately put food in the fridge or let it sit out to cool depends on its temperature. Dangerous bacterial (细菌的) growth happens between 41 and 135 degrees F. Potentially harmful bacteria grows most rapidly at these temperatures.
Placing lots of hot food in the fridge can raise the temperature of the fridge into this danger zone. Fridge temperatures should always be set below 40 degrees F. This may help the food get out of the danger zone as fast as possible.
However, there’s no harm in putting hot food directly into the fridge if you need to. If you are a forgetful person, or if you won’t be around to store the food after it has cooled enough, go ahead and put it in the fridge. Your fridge can handle the heat and get the food cooled quickly.
Food should never stay out at room temperature for more than two hours. Leftovers can become breeding grounds (滋生地) for dangerous bacteria if they’re left out too long and can make people sick.
“It is OK to leave the food cooling outside before you hit the two-hour mark,” says Serena Poon, nutritionist of Le Cordon Bleu’s Grand Diploma training program. “In fact, the sooner you can get your leftovers in the fridge, the better.”
12.Which temperature most contributes to the growth of harmful bacteria?
A.Below 40 degrees B.Between 39~40 degrees F.
C.Between 41~135 degrees F.D.Above 135 degrees F.
13.What is the author’s attitude towards putting hot food directly into the fridge?
A.Unclear.B.supportive.C.Worried.D.Unconcerned. 14.What does Serena Poon suggest doing about the leftovers?
A.Dividing them into small parts.
B.Storing them in the fridge right away.
C.Waiting until they cool down completely outside.
D.Leaving them sitting at room temperature for two hours.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.When to Pack up Leftovers B.How to Prevent Bacterial Growth
C.To Cool Food Outside or in the Fridge D.A Good Idea to Store Food in the Fridge
